Sitting back against the backrest with a long sigh, Tommy brought his towel up to his face to wipe away the sweat from his face before using it to dry off the leather gloves on his hands. After doing 20 reps working on his biceps, Tommy looked around the empty gym, trying to decide which machine would be best next. He purposefully waited for times when he knew the gym was empty, the less people he had to deal with the better.
Getting Angelo to reaffirm his promise had both relieved and bothered Marie. The conflicting feelings had somehow increased her energy and she needed something to do that didn't involve sitting passively. The Danger Room didn't feel right since she was taking a break from the team, so she headed to the gym to do some weight lifting. Walking in, she headed straight to the bench press without looking around and only noticed that she wasn't alone when she had lifted the machine above her head. Plastering on a smile, she nodded at the young man.
Tommy glared at her as she walked across the room through blonde hair plastered across his forehead. Adjusting his gloves slightly, he made a point of ignoring her, moving on to the rowing machine. He wasn't going to let someone ruin his workout, even if he didn't really wanna be around people.
Somebody had obviously woken up on the wrong side of the bed that morning. After completing her reps, Marie set the machine down and walked over to use the leg curl machine, purposefully choosing it based on it's close proximity to the rowing machine. "Ah didn't mean to intrude," she said, her eyes flitting down to his gloves and then to her own.
He fought very hard to roll his eyes but didn't quite manage it. Once Tommy finished rowing his 100 m, he silently stood up and moved across the room to the bench press. Since she'd already done it, he was betting on her not following.
Marie didn't follow him immediately, working her way through a circuit of training as she continued to watch him. Finally, she couldn't stand it anymore and walked over to stand in front of him with her arms crossed over her chest. "Am Ah imagining things or do you have a problem with me?"
Tommy sat up slowly after finishing to look up at her. "I don't have a problem with you. People usually have a problem for me. I'm just saving you the trouble." He picked up his towel and his water bottle to go.
Barely keeping the scowl of her face, she clenched one hand into a fist. "Ah'd appreciate if you didn't tell me what Ah'm gonna do or feel. Ah've had about enough of that for a lifetime." Taking a deep breath, she continued speaking much more calmly. "Ah don't have a problem with you an' you shouldn't just assume that everyone you run across will."
Not helping his bitter laughter, Tommy turned back to her. "I have practice in that regard. I'm hated out of these walls for what I am and inside these walls for what I was. Excuse me if I don't rely on people's good faith where I'm concerned. Now if you'll excuse me..."
"We all make mistakes and if you've changed, people shouldn't hold who you were against you." Good lord, at one point or another the school had ex-murderers, thieves and mercenaries on staff. Waving a gloved hand in front of his face, her expression grew bitter. "As for outside these walls…well you aren't the only one and that's part of what this school is about. Havin' a safe place."
Tommy laughed again, just as bitter as before. He wished he was half of those things, he wouldn't feel as bad as he did about just being a disillusioned kid. "Is there something you want to say to me? Because right now you're just on repeat of things I've already been told. Hearing you say them isn't going to make me believe anymore."
"Then what will?" she retorted. "You obviously have your mind made up about not only how you view the world, but how everyone else views you too. Guess what? It doesn't work like that."
"You have no idea how I view the world." Tommy said coldly. He clenched the towel firmly, the tips of his gloves starting to sparkle as they began to turn to lead.
"Enlighten me. Because it's the only way Ah'll know, just like the only way you'll know how Ah view it or you is if Ah tell you." Shaking her head, she dropped her arms to her sides, at a loss for what else to say to Tommy.
He turned his head, as he couldn't look at her. It wasn't exactly everyday someone here asked him what he thought of things, most just quoted FOH rhetoric back at him. He busied himself with dropping the towel from around his neck so he could remove his gloves before they turned completely to lead and he wouldn't be able to take them off.
"Ah didn't mean to rub ya the wrong way and Ah sure as heck didn't mean to assume anythin' about you. Ah just ask that you return the courtesy. Give people a chance, they might surprise you." She shrugged. "Anytime you wanna talk, my door is always open, but Ah'm not gonna push you if you don't wanna be pushed."
He snorted softly, putting the gloves in his pocket and picking up the towel he'd dropped. "You should like Terry..." he muttered to himself before looking up. "What if I don't like surprises...no offense, but this one was bad enough..."
Terry? Swallowing the automatic reply to that comment, Marie focused her reaction to his second statement. “Trust me, that’s something Ah can relate ta.”
Shaking his head, he moved to leave again. "I'm sure. Look...I'll leave ya to your workout." He was clearly shaken but trying to hide it.
This time Marie didn’t try to stop him, worried that it would do more harm than good. Tommy didn’t seem like someone who was easily shaken, but something she had said clearly had unnerved him. “That offer is always there. And the only surprise is that Ah won’t judge who you were, just who you are.”
"I wouldn't be so sure of that..." Tommy grumbled as he walked out.
Marie watched the retreating figure as Tommy made his way down the hall, remaining still even after he was out of sight. She wondered if he would ever take her up on her offer, somehow doubting it, but still maintaining hope that one day he would.
