Backdated to Monday, Crystal finally gets the truth. About everything.
Crystal closed the door to her hamsters' cage, watching little Jennie and Marius eagerly stuff their pouches with various types of seeds.
The door to the room opened and Jennie poked her head in. "Hey Crystal, how's mini-me?"
Crystal turned away from the dwarf hamsters to look at her roommate. "She is fine; both of the hamsters are fine."
"I still can't believe you named the hamsters Jennie and Marius," Jennie stepped behind Crystal and tapped on the cage. “If he knocks her up, I'm going after him with a shotgun, just so you know."
Crystal stared at Jennie. "I can get another cage and keep them separately, but I think they like each other's company. I am sorry that the man at the pet store did not realize that one of them was male."
"It's a joke. Although, if they do spawn that's just all sorts of weird and unsettling." Jennie sat back on the bed. "What with all the rumors about me and him."
Crystal eyed Jennie quizzically. "What rumors? Crystal didn't usually pay attention to rumors. They were silly and usually unfounded and could make people assume things that weren't true.
"Oh, you know," Jennie laid back on her bed, "'Marius and Jennie went off to Europe and eloped. And then joined the hellfire club.' I would mind more, but it's just a continuation of the rumors that we are secretly lovers or something. Which, it so utterly absurd if you knew either of us."
Crystal stared at Jennie in shock. "Why would anyone say anything like that? The two of you are best friends. You dated Forge, not Marius."
"Some people like to read more into a relationship if it suits them. I guess our stupid fights would be a lot more entertaining if we were dating." Jennie sat back up again, "We made up, by the way. I think we're both done with being stupid."
Crystal managed a wry smile. "I think that that is very good. We have both had our fair share of stupidity lately, have we not?"
"You threw Mr. Logan through the gym doors, I hit Marius with a tree. And was utterly cracked whilst in Europe. I'd say I top you, but this is not a competition that we ever want to get into." Jennie propped her chin in hand.
"I did more than that, Jennie, and you what?" Crystal sat down on her chair and stared at Jennie, wide-eyed. "How is he? Wait... he must be fine, otherwise you would not be so calm about it...unless you have gone evil again." Crystal cast a suspicious glance at her roommate.
"No, I am not evil. Marius and I just discussed how very bad we were at it." Jennie sighed and pulled down the side of her cardigan, showing the bandage on the neck and the bruise that creeped out underneath it. "Marius got sick, and we sort of had an accident on Thursday when I went to look for him. It's why I crashed in Ms. Dane's suite. Anyway, to stop him, I dropped a tree on him. Both of us, really. Didn't do quite what I had planned and he knocked me down and ..." Jennie exhaled loudly. "On the other hand, he now gets to twitch at the pretty lights in his vision."
Crystal had to keep herself from wincing. Things didn't always work out the way you planned, did they? "I am sorry, Jennie. I wish that you had come to talk to me about it when it happened. And I wish you would tell me other things as well...
"When bad things happen, sometimes it's hard to talk about them. I had a lot of other stuff on my mind, but not to worry, next time I suffer a vicious attack by my crazy best friend you'll be the first to know." Jennie said wryly before laying back down. "Did you honestly ever have something happen where you didn't want to talk about it?"
Crystal had to bite back a snort. "Have you seen any sort of 'I attacked Logan' post on the journals, Jennie? But," she continued, looking into Jennie's eyes, "I did come and tell you about it. True, I did not give you all of the exact details, but I did talk to you about it."
Jennie almost rolled her eyes. "You are a nosy one, aren't you?" She flipped herself over and propped herself up on one elbow. "You don't have to know everything about a person to be their friend, you know."
Then again, what was it that Samson said, about burdens? And perhaps if she just told Crystal, it would get the other girl off her back. And make her think twice before asking Jennie for details.
"However, if you wish to know the sordid details of the past summer, I am in a sharing mood. Speak up now, because there won't be a repeat."
"I only want you to tell me if that is what you wish to do," Crystal told Jennie. "I do not want you to tell me and then regret that decision. So if you would like to tell me what happened, yes, I would like to know what happened." Perhaps my email to Ms. Marie would not have been necessary had I known what happened to you during the summer.
"The only regret I have is if you spill about this," Jennie sat up again and clasped her hands in her lap. And told Crystal everything. The chance meeting at the airport, the decision to stay and the conflicting messages she left. The helping Marius find donors, his being cut off and their flight to Monaco. Stealing from the casinos. The lucksnap. Manuel and the truck. Even the empathy loop. The only part she didn't tell was Yvette. As far as Jennie was concerned, only she, Marius, Yvette and the staff needed to know about that.
As Jennie spoke, Crystal listened silently, allowing Jennie to speak without interruption. When Jennie finished speaking, Crystal remained quiet for a few moments. She was relieved to finally know what had happened, to know for sure that Jennie had not meant to be away for so long without contacting anyone. Jennie's starter comment was a bit bothersome, that and the "you are a nosy one, aren't you" comment but Crystal wasn't going to bring that up now.
"So...neither you nor Marius intended to cause any of these events to happen, and now you are on speaking terms once more?"
"In a nutshell? Yeah. But you can see why it's something I did not want to talk about." Jennie tried to think of a polite way to say; 'And it was really none of your business anyway' and decided to just not say anything. "So there. And don't ask me to talk about it again, because I won't."
"Do not worry, Jennie. I will not ask you to talk about it again." Why would she? She already knew what happened, why would she want to make Jennie discuss it again?
"'Kay. I'll be back later." She went out the door, but then stuck her head back in. "And if I'm not back in an hour? Wait longer," she winked, and then left.
Crystal looked towards the door for a few moments, then shook her head and sighed. I hope that all is well with you, Jennie.

Now if Crystal decided to trade in the hamsters for mice...
