Ororo and Kurt head out to the city for a mutual birthday celebration.

"We are almost there," Ororo said, turning the wheel to ease the car
down a narrow sidestreet off of the busy New York avenue. She glanced
sideways at Kurt and grinned; this was about the most information she
had divulged to him about the whereabouts of their destination all
night. She wasn't normally this devious, but she seemed to be enjoying
keeping this secret quite a bit.

Kurt grinned back, curiosity obviously on his face, then turned to
peer down the sidestreet in an attempt to figure it out. "And you
still will not tell me where 'there' is?"

"Patience, Kurt. It will not be long now." She gave him a wink before
turning her attention back to the street, navigating the car between
the narrow sidewalk and the pedestrians that seemed to insist on
walking in the middle of the road. When she spotted an open curb she
made a beeline for it, pulling the Jeep into the spot and parking
before anyone else had a chance to take it. One had to be aggressive
in the city, after all.

Kurt was unobtrusively holding onto the side door handle as they came
to a halt, careful to let go before Ororo noticed. He peered around
them with interest. "I do not think I have been to this part of town
before."

"Well then, it seems I have planned this suprise well. Come, I think
it is right up the street." Ororo was wearing a long, flowing skirt
that just brushed the street as she began to walk, and she gathered it
with one hand as she stepped over the first puddle in their path.

Kurt followed, forcing himself not to seem apprehensive. Yes, maybe
it was almost his first time out without the image inducer... but this
was an evening to be enjoyed, and besides, this was New York.

They pushed their way through a few boisterous crowds in order to
arrive at the door of a rather shabby-looking building. Ororo didn't
look off-put, merely glancing at Kurt and nodding before heading in.
The foyer was dimly light and they could hear the sound of singing,
laughing, and shouting from within.

Bending her head close to the hostess', 'Ro asked for a table for two.
The woman smiled and beckoned for them to follow, picking up two worn
and creased menus and launching herself into the busy main room of the
restaurant.

Well, this seemed very... homely. Kurt was smiling as he followed Ororo and their hostess into the depths of the building, looking around at every detail.

What the restaurant lacked in decor it more than made up for in atmosphere - everywhere he looked there were smiling, laughing faces of people having a good time with one another. The waitresses negotiated the busy room with ease, carrying trays laden with food and bottles of what looked like vodka to and fro. The hostess led Kurt and 'Ro to a small table off to one side, setting the menus before them and informing them that their server would be right with them.

"So what do you think?" Ororo wanted to know once she had departed. "I know it is probably not where you might've chosen to go if you had the chance, but I have heard wonderful things about the food here..."

"I think sometimes, when it comes to food, people need the choice to be made for them", he said with a smile. "A reason to try new places."

"Exactly. And I think you will find the menu here much to your liking." With a grin, Ororo gestured for him to pick up the menu, looking forward to seeing his reaction when he saw what kind of fare the restaurant offered.

She wasn't disappointed, as his eyes widened the more he scanned down the list. "...how long did it take you to find a good restaurant here that served Romany food?"

"Not as long as you might think," 'Ro replied, chuckling. Of course, it didn't hurt to have several supergeniuses and access to any information she wanted at her fingertips, either. "So, do you see anything that looks appetizing?"

"Many things", Kurt said, looking up at her with a grin. "It may take me some time to decide."

"That is quite all right. You have all the time you need." Ororo sat back in her chair, glad that her 'surprise' had gone over well. She hoped the rest of the evening would be met with just as much happiness - Kurt deserved it, and it was nice to spend time together outside of the the school and the team. It is too easy to forget that that is not all there is. But I will remember from now on.
