Unsure of what to do next, our Happy Heroes have a brief rest, and Shiro and Julio consider their options. Their lives don't exactly suck here, you know...

The van had dropped them off not far from the airport, and the group was now inside of a fast food restaurant haggling over what to do next. They had to get to Montana, because that's where Kyle was. A telephone call had confirmed he was a "guest" of the Montana juvenile correctional facility, but he was currently denied all speaking and visitation privileges. So the next step was to obviously get there. Julio finally got sick of the arguing and took a step out into the chill January air. He sat on a planter outside and leaned his head back against the wall, trying for calm, and also trying for even the tiniest sense of his power.

Shiro hadn't even stepped inside in the first place. For one, fast food makes him ill and he really didn't want to vomit all over anyone, even Lorna. And secondly, he was no strategizer outside of Final Fantasy. He'd let those whose ideas went beyond "blow it up and drag him out" actually plan. And then there was the powers issue. He was wearing a coat! He hadn't worn a coat in almost nine years. Leaning against the outside wall of the restaurant, he sighed. Stupid cold weather, stupid lack of powers, stupid confusing life with a living father and a politician's son for a boyfriend.

"Nice night, huh?"

Shiro looked up and raised an eyebrow. "How are we defining nice? Apparent that English is not your first language . . ." The disdain that usually laced his tone as absent, though. "How are they faring inside? Anything remotely intelligent yet?"

Julio shrugged. "We have to get to Montana, and we were taken to the airport. But we do not have enough money to fly, and they would i.d. us right away anyway. Especially my father," he sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Then someone came up with the idea to steal a plane and no one can come up with a good reason why not. The bird says nothing, and I wonder how it is that nobody has a noticed a seagull underneath the table."

"Cognitive dissonance?" Shiro suggested. "It has worked well for us so far." He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked off at the planes leaving the ground and descending. It hadn't been so long since he could do that, but that thought made him frown, and not necessarily because he missed being able to do so.

"So what do you think is happening?" Julio said, turning to Shiro. "How is it, that we are here in world where we are not mutants at all? How can you undestroy a city?" He sat back and shoved his hands in his pockets.

Shiro couldn't help but smirk. "You are asking the person who went to a fairy world of gods and demons and acted as the personal errand boy for the Fates. I would not be too surprised if this is some enchantment. Maybe Loki is finally trying to take his revenge on us. Except that I do not see anyone else who went to Asgard."

"Well, whoever is doing this, it is really sick joke." Julio leaned his head back against the wall and sighed. "All I have wanted since this summer is for it to have not happened. And actually being here. I realize, I do not want this, at all."

"Why not?" Shiro asked around the lump that suddenly appeared in his throat. "It is a chance to start anew, ne? What I can only assume was the single worst experience of your life never happened. Many would consider that a blessing."

"Yes, and that is the strange thing. I do not want this. Because this?" Julio gestured to the city in front of them. "This is a lie. I know what I did, and I cannot go around pretending that it did not happen."

"But it didn't happen," Shiro countered. "Well, I think it did not. So far as we know, it did not. Everything that occurred as a result of our mutations never happened here." He frowned. "My father is alive," he all but whispered.

Julio stared at Shiro for a few silent moments. "You might be able to live knowing that this is a lie," he said finally, "but I cannot. I will not. In our reality, a city is gone and over four hundred people are dead because of something I did. I will not do a disservice to their memory by running way." he paused, and looked away. "I will not run away," he said softly.

It was Shiro's turn to be quiet. He considered Julio's statement and the conviction behind it. "I see," he said after a minute. He pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and pressed 2 on his speed dial. "~Dad? It's Shiro. I'm fine, look . . . Father, just be quiet. I just want to apologize . . . For everything. Give Gabriel my best. Goodbye, Father. I'll miss you.~"
