Marie and Amanda have their usual Friday night social time, this time dinner to make up for the lost brunch. There's gossip aplenty.

"...and so Clarice came and teleported us back to the mansion. I probably owe her my first born child now," Marie said with a laugh. She knew that Amanda wasn't fond of Lorna, but the story was amusing regardless, so she'd decided to tell in the hopes that the blonde witch would at least find it somewhat funny.

Amanda snorted, amused. "Only you could accidentally end up in Vermont," she said, playing with her chopsticks. They'd come to one of the Chinese places Doug had discovered, a tiny little hole in the wall where they were the only Westerners and the menu was in Mandarin and Cantonese. "So, what happened to the car?"

Marie smiled rather sheepishly. "Oh, the car was still tucked away in Harry's parking lot. So at least we know neither of us drove...though Ah wonder if that means Ah flew or we hitched." Glancing down at the menu, she squinted for a moment, then closed it and set it down on the table. "Ok, how 'bout Ah just let you order for me?"

Amanda grinned, and as the waiter approached (looking rather skeptical about their ability to order) rattled off a series of words in Mandarin. Her accent wasn't fantastic, but she could make herself understood, and the man grinned and bobbed his head enthusiastically before departing. "'S the benefit of hanging out with Doug," the with said with a grin. "'S one of his favourite places, and they're starting to get to know us by now. Don't worry, not eyeballs or tentacles or anything weird like that." She took a sip of her water and stretched her shoulders out, visibly relaxing. "'M glad we did this. I needed this, and after your adventures in Vermont, I'd say you did too."

Marie raised an eyebrow at the mention of tentacles but decided not to comment. "This last week has been rather...bizarre hasn't it?" the Southerner asked as she leaned back in her chair. "Dreamworlds, captured villains. Ah mean, usually they at least get spaced out by a week or two."

"We had a spot there where it was Remy fighting off Gambit in his head, demons coming for Illyana and then demons coming for me. All in a couple of weeks," Amanda said wryly. "I've found this stuff tends to gang up on you. Still, at least as far as disasters go, the dreamworld wasn't too bad. Most of the kids are dealing with it all right, but the looks." She tilted her head at Marie. "And I never thanked you for coming and finding me. I appreciate it."

Marie shrugged and smiled at her friend. "You'dve done the same for me. Though Ah apologize for not dressing you before Kurt got there...we'd found all the kids that morning too and then when you were in the same condition, well, speed rather than modesty was on my mind."

"'S fine." Amanda waved away the apology as the waiter appeared with appetisers, in the form of mini spring rolls and wontons. "I was only making a fuss so the kids didn't worry. Distract them with the funny, yeah? And no pants is always funny, or so Benny Hill's taught me."

"Most of them react well to funny...humor is actually one of the healthiest coping mechanisms. Which bodes well for Xavier's students Ah suppose, since it appears to be the device of choice." Marie paused long enough to take pour a little duck sauce on her plate and dip the egg roll in it. "How're you handling it? Seems like you had one of the more bizarre alterna-lives. Ah heard tale of a dress."

Amanda shrugged a little. "No great hang-ups, if that's what you mean. There was some stuff I would have liked to have been real, like the bit where I actually knew my dad, but it was a lie." She reached for a spring roll and crunched into it before going on. "And yeah, there was a dress. I'm buggered how I got into the bloody thing, but logic was breaking down pretty fast at the end there. It was this fluffy bloody thing, like someone's idea of a traditional German wench's costume."

And lies never last Marie thought to herself as she took a bite of her spring roll, thinking back to a little town in Meridian. "Too bad there can't be pictures from the dream world...we could start an 'Amanda in silly dresses' photo collection."

With a bark of laughter that drew glances from the other customers, Amanda wrinkled her nose at Marie. "You could probably ask one of the 'paths to pull it out of someone's head, but as far as I know, there's no camera for telepathy. Which is just as well - this one was even worse than the pink thing Doug and Ange left for me."

Marie covered her mouth as she giggled, mouth still full of egg roll. Swallowing, she wiped away the water that had started coming out of her eyes. "Ah bet Forge could invent a camera for telepathy. 'cept he's off to Scotland for a bit now." She paused, using her chopsticks to grab a wonton. "And y'know, there are some images that should stay in people's heads, so maybe it's good that a camera like that doesn't exist."

"Yeah, there's already enough porn in the world," Amanda quipped. Then she blinked at Marie. "Forge is leaving? Did I miss something on the journals?"

Marie frowned. "Ya know, Ah don't think he's made an official announcement about it. Ah just saw him packing his stuff and listened to some of the student gossip." She smiled reassuringly at Amanda. "An' it's just temporary from what Ah understand...couple months of study with Hank."

Amanda felt oddly relieved. "Had me worried for a minute there. That'd be Forge's idea of a holiday, tho', doing the scary science thing with the big blue furry bloke."

"Ah think we've all had enough of folks running off without explanations," Marie said. "Ah keep expecting Scott to institute a form we'll have to fill out in triplicate everytime we want to spend a couple days away."

"Fuck, not more paperwork," Amanda mock-groaned. "I've already got enough in my life, ta very much. Tho' we're sort of set up for people to disappear without warning. Or at least leave cryptic notes in drop boxes a week later."

Finishing off her wonton, Marie set her chopsticks carefully on the rest beside her plate. "Ah don't know how Ah'll react the first time it's you or Doug that has to do one of those cryptic vanishing acts if it lasts more than a couple days. Ah know my extracurricular activities aren't always the safest, but y'all...well, there's an added layer to what you do, just by its nature."

"If it's more than a couple of days, I'll be finding a way to let you know I'm okay," Amanda replied, gratified by Marie's concern. Friends might be considered weak spots to exploit by someone like Rack, but Amanda knew she was a better person for having them. "Like Pete used to do with me, back when I was still at the school. Coded email, text, something like that. Postcard with 'having a lovely time, wish you were here.'" Her expression grew wry. "'Sides, couldn't hurt to have an extra back up system in case of trouble. I don't call in, someone raises the alarm. Since you've already done that for me once. But 's mostly academic any way - I'm better with the research side, and the most dangerous part of that is papercuts or having a bookshelf fall on me."

Marie smiled wryly back, glad that Amanda wouldn't leave her to worry. "Yeah, back ups are always the way to go...though Ah hope paperclips and stray notes are the most dangerous things in your future." She inhaled deeply as the waiter brought over the dishes Amanda had ordered.

Amanda shrugged. "And when it isn't, there's always the shielding spell. I'm not exactly helpless, but waking up in medlab once this year's plenty for me." She grinned at the sight of the food. "Looks like they gave us extra. Hope you're hungry."

"Ah always am. Gotta love that mutant metabolism," Marie said as she scooped some rice onto her plate. "Though if you've ever seen Angel eat, it puts a whole 'nother perspective on what eating a lot means." Picking up a plate of something that looked like beef in brown sauce with little spicy peppers, she took a healthy serving and then passed the dish to Amanda.

"You're telling me - she dragged you on one of her hot dog eating competitions yet? I swear, she gives the old Bottomless Pit a run for its money." Amanda laughed as she helped herself to rice and some of the beef. "Oh, try the pork. 'S good stuff." She pointed to one of the other dishes with her chopsticks.

Taking Amanda's suggestion, Marie added some of the pork to her plate. "She's a real good kid," Marie said with smile. "And her and Julio are so cute. Do you get to see that on the bus trip?" Compared to the relationships that had been in existence when she'd been at the school, Julio and Angel were just so refreshingly normal that she loved overhearing the bits and pieces of gossip that floated around.

"You mean the sitting up the back of the bus, holding hands and the giggling?" Amanda's expression was amused, and somehow affectionate. She liked Angel and Julio. "They're adorable, they really are. But you didn't hear that from me. Gotta rep, after all." She winked at Marie before popping a piece of green pepper in her mouth.

"My lips are sealed," Marie said with a grin.
