On Mondo's second trip up the waterfall, he forgoes Crystal's company in favor of short, red, and spiky.

There was a rather uncharacteristically broad grin on Yvette's face underneath the ski mask she wore as she scrambled down the last few feet of the ice wall and joined those who were either waiting their turn, or had been up once and wanted to go again. Ice climbing was fun, especially when she didn't have to worry about accidentally slicing a rope or harness. Mind you, she was still very careful, picking her way across the snow-packed ground, to not step only anything - she had her feet and hands bare, and a slip could be disastrous.

The grin on Mondo's face was not at all out of place. His first trip up the waterfall was pretty scary, with the poking through the gloves and the slip, but he'd recovered with his characteristic good cheer and couldn't wait to try another more natural run. "Yvette!" he waved at the smaller girl, looking something like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in his bulky winter jacket, scarf, hat, and snowpants.

"Hello, Mondo!" she called back, scampering up to him, using her hands almost as much as her feet. Unlike most of the other students, she was dressed only in courderoy pants and a sweater. The sleeves of the sweater where pushed up and the legs of the pants had been cut to mid-calf to allow her freedom of movement, considering how short she was, but in deference to the breath-taking cold, she was wearing a hat made from Forge's magic cloth. It served to protect the elastic straps of the face mask that had been pushed onto her by one of the instructors, who had warned her of how it would be cold enough to hurt her nose and throat to breathe. "Are you being having the fun?"

"There is much with the Having of the Fun." he said with a grin. "Once I stopped being cold this started to be a whole lot of fun! Almost as much fun as wrestling." he said with a grin. "You ready to go up again?" he asked with a considering eye at the waterfall.

"If Mr Dayspring is being ready to be catching me if I fall," she replied, glancing over at the big man, who gave her a nod. She grinned at Mondo. "And I am thinking you were not liking the snow?"

"Not at all." he said with an exaggerated shiver. "But luckily for me titanium doesn't get cold like people get cold." he said with another grin. He spared a look for the top of the waterfall, and then to Yvette. "Race you?" he asked her with a puckish grin.

Glowing blue eyes flared. "I think I am, how you say, being beating your butt?" she replied, tone teasing.

Nathan cleared his throat. Only that, but there was enough of a disapproving edge to it to be noticeable. "Remember Mr. Dayspring's 'Common Sense Climbing Rule #6'?" he asked, mildly but firmly enough to make it very clear that he was very serious. "'You rush, you fall'? I may be right here to catch you but I'm certainly not going to be encouraging bad safety habits." He paused, looking up at the waterfall. "You can't race for speed," he said, "but Yvette, if you start over there, and Mondo, if you start here... you've got two different routes up the waterfall. You can see which one is more challenging, and that'll determine who gets to the top first."

Yvette nodded solemnly, realising that in her enthusiasm, she'd forgotten Climbing Rule #6. She glanced over at Mondo, that grin sneaking out again. "This is being a good thing for you?"

If Mondo were any more laid-back he'd be horizontal. "Sure." he said, eyeing his chosen route up the waterfall. But Climbing Rule #6 was awful important and he'd better remember it. He looked at Yvette, then at the ice. No way was he going to let the little European _girl_ beat him to the top! No way!

"Technique wins the race," Nathan said sternly as they took their places. "Not speed. Remember that or I'll pull you both off the ice telekinetically." He grinned, very widely. "Okay. Go."

Mondo cheerfully ignored Nate's admonition and charged up the ice-block, using the spikes on his boots and his bare hands to gouge himself hand-holds in the ice. What he lacked in technique he made up for in borrowed strength and native determination.

For her part, Yvette was more graceful, toe claws acting in the role of boots and her taloned hands sinking into the ice with a minimum of effort. Mindful of Nathan's warning, she didn't rush, but her powers did give her a natural advantage. She reached a small bulge of ice and worked her way around it, knowing she didn't have the strength in her arms to haul herself up and over it.

Mondo went up and over such obstacles gracelessly - he was as strong as titanium right now, proportionally speaking, and titanium is one of the stronger metals on the periodic table. But a poor decision on his part led him to need to backtrack and try another approach.

Her breath was starting to become laboured, small puffs of steam following her wake. Six months of inactivity had taken their toll on her body, even with her mutation protecting her from the typical muscle wasting. She started slowing down, picking her way more and more carefully over a section of ice that was a bit more jagged than the rest.

Mondo's wind was still good - either through his own efforts or from a side-effect of his power. He made it to the top and did a little bowl-full-of-jelly victory dance right there at the summit, much to the amusement and/or disgust of the other patrons joining him there. "WOOHOO!" he yelled up into the sky.

A moment or two later, Yvette scrabbled her way over the lip of the waterfall, slightly breathless. "You are... being... the winner," she managed, giving Mondo a smile.

Mondo cheered and grabbed for Yvette's hand, holding both of theirs up in a victory pose. "WE WIN!" he said cheerfully. After letting her hand go, he looked down on her. "Tell you what. Have you ever had hot apple cider?" he asked mischeviously.

She managed to squash her initial reaction to pull away when he grabbed her hand - he'd made himself as hard as titanium, after all, and she couldn't hurt him - and gave him a quizzical look. Apple juice that was hot? "No. But I am thinking I would be liking to," she told him, eyes glowing happily.
