Sooraya finds Angel in the kitchen, singing. Once the song is over, Angel reveals that she has a surprise for her roommate.

The kitchen was gloriously empty when Angel slid in. Literally, seeing as she'd taken a running start down the hallway in a pair of Julio's socks. Giggling as she bounced off the wall, she made a beeline to the fridge. "Food food food," she chanted, opening up the fridge that never, ever seemed to be empty.

Ms. Dane was a goddess.

There was singing coming from the kitchen, Sooraya noted as she walked down the hall. And not just any singing. Sooraya had never sung to her food before... she had never sung about food before, to that matter. But she had heard enough of her roommate's singing to know that this particular 'food food food' was probably preceding a rather large and impressive ingestion of food, the likes of which would give anyone with a weaker stomach and a non-mutant metabolism quite a bellyache.

Peering into the kitchen, she was gratified to see Angel disappearing halfway into the refrigerator in search of something to eat, and she smiled at the sight. "You must be careful you do not fall inside," she cautioned, loud enough that the other girl could hear her over the hum of the appliance.

Giggling, Angel popped her head out of the fridge and waved at Sooraya. "Being eaten by the fridge would totally be ironic," she agreed, "and kind of sad. Want something to eat while I'm in here? I could set up shop, I think, just sitting in the fridge. Only problem would be, you know, suffocating to death when the doors closed."

"Yes, that will be a problem," Sooraya agreed solemnly, nodding as she pulled the ends of her sleeves over her wrists in a tugging motion. "But there are many people who will open the doors to eat... they will save you."

"And all we have to do is just hope they aren't so hungry they eat little ol' me." An idea struck her and Angel beamed, dragging out the makings of a large sandwich. "Oh! I've got a new trick, d'ya wanna see? Been practising it for a while but never really felt confident before to give it a go."

Sooraya raised her eyebrows; she could only assume this 'new trick' had something to do with Angel's powers. She was slightly envious of the other girl - well, she was slightly envious of almost everybody else, since their powers were on the whole much more impressive and useful than hers. She had spent hours listening to stories of what her classmates had accomplished in Kansas City after the snowstorm; she couldn't imagine her powers ever doing something quite so useful. "Yes, I will like to see," she said, nodding again.

"Well, not see really..." Angel bit her lip and focused on her sandwich for a second, looking slightly hesitant. Steeling herself, she looked up to meet Sooraya's eyes. This was harder than taking some of her finals!

"~How are you today?~" she asked, going for one of the easier phrases Doug had been teaching her. With him as a teacher, Angel had been picking up Sooraya's language at a faster rate than if she'd done it on her own but she was still nervous about her roommate's reaction.

It took the Afghan girl a moment to realize that the words coming out of Angel's mouth were in Dari, not English. Then her eyes lit up and a grin spread over her face as her excitement grew. "Angel! You are talking in my language. I do not know you can do that!"

"I couldn't up until I started having tutoring sessions with Doug from Snow Valley." She clapped her hands in delight, pleased at Sooraya's reaction. "I figured, you know, you're so far from home and you hafta learn English, right? Well, why not make it easier on you if I learned Dari?"

"You do not must do that," Sooraya replied, her words becoming more confused in her excitement. "I am happy to speak English, but it is good to hear the words that are my own..."

Any more smiling and her face was going to implode but it was so totally worth it. Angel scooted around the counter and made her way over. "Everyone misses home," she responded, "and yeah, I thought you'd like it. Man, you should have heard me when I first tried to start..."

"It is not as bad as when I am first doing English," Sooraya said, laughing. "That is for a promise."

"I apparently said something along the lines of trying to buy Doug's sisters at one point," Angel admitted, giggling. "It's a fun language, even when I was mucking it up."

"I will like to help you practice," her roommate told her. "It is good to be knowing another language... think, we will be telling secrets and the boys will not know what they are meaning." Still smiling, Sooraya pulled a stool out from the counter and slid up onto it, crossing her legs at the ankles. "Thank you, Angel. It is very nice for you to do for me."

"Any time, honestly. And that would be awesome, you helping me to practice. Doug's a wonder but it'll be fun to train up the ability to speak it with you." She beamed. "And that was the point, anyway, was to speak it with you. It'll be a long time before I'm really, really good at it but I'm starting out okay."

It was hard to tell, but if you looked closely you could see Sooraya was blushing. Not for the first time she wondered how she had gotten lucky enough to have met such nice, kind people, especially her roommate. "It is good to practice. What things are you wanting to say? It is the vocabulary that is the most hard, I think."

"Yeah, the vocabulary totally kicks my butt, as well as the tenses. The tenses are hard to figure out. So any extra help I could get would be fantastic." Angel grinned and snagged the stool next to her roommate's, dragging her lunch makings with her. "And I'm so glad you liked the surprise."

"Yes, I like it very much. Thank you, Angel."

"You're welcome." Angel giggled. "So, how do you say 'You're such a boy'? I need to practice things to say to Kyle and Julio."
