Log: Garrison/Mondo
Mar. 28th, 2007 04:02 pmMondo asks for some extra help from Kane after a self defense class.
Garrison quickly scrubbed his towel through his hair and tossed it back on to the mat by his gymbag. Most of the students had already filed out, following the self-defense class. They'd been dealing with hold breaks, and he was bruised from where Lorna had been demonstrating the techniques against a stronger and taller assailent to the students. He suspected she might be doing things a little too enthusiastically intentionally, but didn't bother to say anything. After all, if he was wrong, it wasn't good to have a woman that can bend metal with her brain mad at you.
He stuffed the towel and his notes into the bag, and stood up, only to see that Mondo hadn't left yet. The young man had been uncharacteristically quiet, and had held back during the class, which wasn't like he. He tended to take things slowly, especially considering the weight and strength difference between him and some of the others, but he'd never seemed reluctant before.
"Hey Mondo. Was there something that you wanted?"
"Mr Kane?" Mondo asked, very politely. "I have a question. Well, not really a question but a concern. See, I like this class. But I'm a little worried about, ya know, hurting someone." he said worriedly. "I mean, I'm a lot bigger than just about everyone else and I can be a whole lot stronger, too. When we were doing those escapes I banged me knee because I didn't want to trip and fall on my partner."
"Well, there are mats, so I don't think it's likely you're going to accidentially hurt someone." Garrison slung his bag over his shoulder and paused. Right, they had mentioned that Mondo had badly injured his knee before coming to the school. Kane dropped his bag back to the floor. "Are you having more mobility problems with your knee during class?"
Mondo obediently waggled his knee a few times. "It hurts right now, but that's because I bonked it earlier." he said. "Normally, it's not too bad. I stretch a lot first." he noted. "And I don't think I'm explaining very well. Maybe I could show you?" he asked hopefully.
"Sure. Let me know what's up with it, eh?" Kane stepped back on to the mats, just to get off of the harsh support of the wood floors.
Mondo nodded. "We can do the throw we were working on today." he said, and then he waited for Kane to get set up. Once he was, Mondo reached forward, grabbed a hold of Kane in the designated way, and effortlessly threw him to the ground with enough force to rattle Kane's bones. He winced a bit as his knee, already strained from earlier, protested vigorously at the motion.
Kane's breakfall rang like a cannonshot in the room, stopping his motion. He got off from the mat, considering. "Alright, first things first. Don't synch up during class to anything. You're using brute strength in the place of technique."
He walked a tight circle around Mondo, before stepping back in. "Start your movement in to throw, without actually doing it."
Mondo stopped to concentrate for a moment, to let the hardness and strength of the steel go. Once they had left him to reside back in his necklace, he did as instructed - a bit wobbily, as his knee did not wish to have much weight put upon it - but solidly enough. He made contact and then stopped, as instructed.
"Okay, good. Now, you know the rules for the class. Come as you are. Changing your form to deal with your knee is also changing how you move and react to things, and that should come after you've got this down, not before." Garrison tapped Mondo's leg with two fingers. "You're a big guy, Mondo. Wide shouldered, big boned; you're carrying a lot of weight on your frame. When you're coming in, you're trying to keep your centre of gravity low, which is good. But you're doing it all through your knees, which is bad."
Garrison stepped back and showed the action Mondo made slowly, pointing out as he did. "See how you're using your knees to bridge between positions, rather than spreading it out with your hips, back and ankles?"
Mondo stopped to think about it for a moment. "Let me try." he said, and then backed up to try the approach again. This time he did a little better, although his earlier sumo training instincts were still, as a whole, winning out for him. "Like that?" he asked. His knee was screaming, but Mondo didn't let it show outside of a little tenseness around the eyes, maybe a twitch now and then.
"It's better. Look, I'll tell you what. Come in about fifteen minutes early to class for the next few weeks. We'll work on ways to move that help keep some of your weight off of that knee, so you're not in pain. Pain tends to make people rush things, and if someone is going to get hurt, that's going to be the reason." Kane scooped his bag back up and clapped Mondo on the shoulder. "Go soak your knee before you fall over, eh? And any time you're feeling discomfort or pain in class, tell me right away. Don't wait for the end."
Mondo nodded. "OK!" he said, cheered by the notion of an end to his gym-time pain. He got about halfway to the lockers before he remembered his manners. "Mr Kane?" he said with one of his big grins on his face. "Thank you."
"Compliments of the Mounties, kid." Garrison said, returning the grin. "Now hit the showers... I always wanted to say that."
