Crystal has an idea and presents it to her sister, whose exhaustion becomes readily apparent.
Date in Attilan: September 05, 2007
It had been over two months since they had lost contact with the outside world. There had been chaos at first, not that Crystal had left the palace to witness any of it. With the uncertainty of what had happened, and Maximus out there somewhere, it wouldn't be safe for her to leave the palace right now. Of course, Crystal didn't really feel like leaving the palace now anyway. While she didn't mind the whole "being cut off from the rest of the world" idea, the death of her parents, aunt, and uncle had hit her hard. She tried her best to avoid thinking about it, but the knowledge of what Maximus had done, had made her do, was hard to keep out of her mind.
"Medusa!" Crystal called out her sister's name as she caught sight of the tall redhead. "~Good morning. Any news?~" The question was the same every day, more ritual and habit and a "just in case" question than an actual expectation to find that anything had changed. Surely if new information was discovered, she wouldn't have to ask to know about it.
A silent head shake was Medusa's reply, the same as every other morning. It was strange to her, how quickly they had settled into a new routine. The state of affairs in Attilan hadn't left much room for mourning - a short memorial service held, empty graves labeled in the royal cemetery, and then they had needed to forge on, to make some sense and order for the island and it's inhabitants. Walking over to Crystal, Medusa lightly rested a hand on her shoulder. "~How are you holding up, little Crystal?~"
"~The same as yesterday,~ Crystal responded. "~What happened is very strange, but we will manage. We have to. We still have each other, yes? At least you and Blackagar stayed behind.~" Her face turned impassive for a few moments. Crystal was glad that Blackagar and her sister had not been on the plane, but the thought of how they survived led to the thought of the reason why they had survived, which led to other things of which she'd rather not think or speak.
Medusa's hand squeezed gently as she walked around to face her sister. "~Put those thoughts out of your mind for now,~" the redhead said gently, as it wasn't hard to see where Crystal's thoughts had headed. "~There is still much to focus on here, to arrange. So many people who we must help find work, homes, a way to carry on with life...the temporary housing solution has been successful, but it needs to be temporary. People cannot remain happy living in others' homes. We're starting construction on a new apartment complex - which will also give people work.~"
Crystal gave her sister a brief nod. Their lives had been changed and disrupted so much, sometimes it was hard to remember and realize that the same held true for others on Attilan. People needed something to occupy their minds and time, and so did she. "~I still want to take university classes,~" Crystal told Medusa. That had been the original plan before all of... this happened. Whatever it was had happened. Craziness had happened. Her mother and father would want her to continue with her studies, wouldn't they? "I think... just one class for now, though.~" The thought of classes and school brought to mind an idea that had recently begun to surface. "~I think sometimes people want to learn but they do not know how to go about doing it. I thought perhaps we might be able to help some of them. What do you say to the idea of a school where the mutants on Attilan can learn about and practice using their abilities in a safe environment?~"
"~I would say it is a great idea and one that was on the backburner of the old government...but it would need someone to lead it, organize...it would not be a simple task, beginning a school.~" The redhead said the words in a very neutral tone, watching her younger sister.
"~Yes, I am aware of that,~" Crystal replied. "~I do not even know how many people would be interested or willing to ask for help with their abilities. We might have only two students, or perhaps over a hundred people will respond. We will need the proper facilities, and staff members, and if no one is interested so be it, but I believe there will be an interest.~"
"~I see,~" Medusa said, still waiting to see what her sister planned to do with the idea - was it something she was suggesting for someone else to do or a task she planned on attempting herself?
Crystal had heard and used the words "I see" enough to recognize the different meanings of the phrase. She wasn't very encouraged by Medusa's response, but her sister was letting her continue the sales pitch. "~The school will work best if it has official backing as well as well as a representative from the royal family involved in and present at the school itself,~" Crystal continued. "~I know that you and Blackagar are quite busy, but with your support I will organize and arrange the beginnings of the school. We should start small, I think, I believe I have already found the perfect location, and we can enlarge the building or move to another location later if needed.~
Medusa nodded curtly. "~It sounds as though you have put a lot of thought into this. Draw up a plan and a presentation for Karnak and see what he thinks - if he believes your suggestion is sound, then I am sure Blackagar will back you in your plan to start a school for mutants.~"
Again, Crystal nodded, but her nod was accompanied by a small smile. "~Thank you, Medusa.~" She knew her sister didn't mean to be rude or short with her.
A tired smile crossed Medusa's face and a strand of hair reached out to pat her sister on the back. "~You are welcome, little Crystal. It is a good idea. Keep those coming - we have much need for them these days.~"
"~I will.~"
