Christian says thank you to Scott before leaving.
Even at three in the morning, the quay off Kowloon Harbour in Hong
Kong was busy. The pier, very close to the airport where the Blackbird
was being secretly refueled thanks to a major British corporation, was
designed for smaller boats and a dozen security guards stood watch
over expensive yachts. Following the pickup in Macau, Christian had
offered to provide the X-Men with a measure of thanks by arranging for
the fuel, and a feast of excelled Hunan cooking in a restaurant as
deceptive in appearance as himself. With Scott and Garrison, who had chosen to idle a bit, instead of waiting by the plane, he had taken them to the
docks, where his own ship had just come in.
The big sailboat looked poor next to the gilded power yachts and
luxury cruisers, but anyone with an eye for ships could tell that Kane's boat, 'Enigma' had the clean lines and expert riggings showed a ship well invested in. Christian had also introduced his wife; Didi Lucrelira-Kane, a woman not much older than Clarice, although displaying a remarkable sense of
self-possession. Garrison's sullen gaze had turned poisonous, and the
young man had stalked back to the Blackbird without a word.
Christian watched his son leave, his expression unreadable until he
finally turned back to the X-Man.
"Didi's just gotten word from the SIS. The Chinese have taken the men
who made up Foom into custody. They seemed as surprised as the rest of
us, considering that when I brought Foom down the first time, it was
assumed the incarceration would eliminate his ability to reform
permenantly." Kane said. "Unfortunately, if Tong can get his hands on
another spirit fount, you might have a dragon with a grudge against
you on the loose."
"We collect enemies with grudges," Scott said dryly. He'd liberated a
pair of crutches from the Blackbird's onboard medical supplies. His
leg wasn't broken, but it certainly wasn't holding his weight. "The
whole dragon thing is new, yes, but if it shows up again, we'll make
do."
"I imagine you would. Your people do good work, Summers. Hollinger's
angry he can't make the incident public, because he feels you deserve
some recognition for the lives you saved tonight." Kane clasped him
lightly on the shoulder. "Unfortunately, the decision is to just
quietly de-escalate as fast as possible, but believe me, there will be
some high placed people who will know the truth."
"Getting the job done is recognition enough. Making contacts that get
us invited on future jobs is just icing on the cake," Scott said.
"Yes, throwing yourself back into danger. No wonder that you're a pilot." Kane observed wryly. He shook hands with Scott. "Best of luck, Scott. If you need anything, feel free to give me a call. I can't promise, but you'd be amazed at what I can find out. And ask Charles to keep an eye on my son. He'd resent it from me, but what can you do. Didi, let's get out of here. I feel like a few days in Brisbane!"
With that, Sir Christian Kane was gone back into his world, leaving the X-Men to return to thiers.
