In which Dani and Jane plot by the fire, and Jane has had perhaps too much sugar.

Tomorrow, Jane decided decisively as she stretched her magenta-clad toes out toward the fireplace, she would try skiing. What good would being at a ski resort be if she didn't try skiing? Although the fire was very nice, and her room was, well, not better than the one at the mansion, but certainly cozy enough to hide out in for long stretches of time. Not that she would want to with all of the snow and places to go and stuff. And the whole meeting the Minister-guy thing. Very important.

The blonde girl closed her eyes and sighed, frankly happy to be out of the somewhat charged mansion atmosphere. The past few weeks had been weird, what with everyone seeming to be freaking out over one thing or another. This would be a nice break, she hoped. Let people relax, calm down, sort stuff out.

And ski. Can't forget that.

Dani was familiar with snow, but not with skiing being that Oklahoma was mostly flatter than a pancake, so she had signed up for a lesson and had hit the bunny slopes. Now though, she was cold and her feet hurt. Apparently that was normal for ran new ski boots, but it was still painful. Wincing, she entered the hotel foyer and spotted Jane near the fireplace. "Hey," she said, coming over and sitting down. Immediately there was a waiter wanting to know if she wanted a hot drink. Dani declined, unsure exactly what the protocol was for tipping and the like for these things. She'd get something later.

"Hey there!" Jane beamed at Dani. "How - oh, wait, hey!" She clamored into a kneeling position in her chair and flagged down the departing waiter. "Can I have another one of these, please?" She held out an empty mug to him. "Thank you."

"The hot chocolate here is really good," she confided to Dani, as she settled back in her chair. "So what did you do today?"

"Skiing," Dani replied, stating the obvious, but not meanly. "Or well, trying. Apparently lots of people are scared of the lifts," it was disconcerting and rather surprising to discover. Dani had expected more people to be scared of skiing itself. "How are you liking this place? Nice, ain't it?

"Oh! Was it fun? I'm going to try to go tomorrow, I spent today wandering mostly. I can't imagine being afraid of the lifts, it must be just like flying!" Jane realized dimly that she was rambling and tried to focus. "I really like it here. Everything is so pretty and just...well, not perfect, but pretty freaking awesome, don't you think?" Awesome, cool, wicked, nifty, neat...

"I like the snow," Dani just liked snow in general. It coated the world and made everything so much prettier than it really was, "When I was little I'd make snowmen and get in snowball fights all the time. I was vicious with a snowball," Dani grinned, remembering. She'd been an expert snowball maker at one time.

"Really?" Jane took her drink from the waiter - how quick! - and took a long swallow. So very, very good. She'd have to ask what kind of mix they used. "Did you ever have any of those big snowball fights where there's like a zillion kids on each side and you've got snowforts and blockades and giant snowmen made to look like Godzilla stomping on helpless mini-snowmen? Like you see in the movies and Calvin and Hobbes? Because I always thought that would bet the coolest thing, you know? Because, like, I've never really been in a snowball fight except for that one time with Bobby and he cheats."

"That's pretty much how they went, except without the forts and Godzilla," Dani agreed, "Looking back, we were probably just being stupid, but it was a lot of fun. And cold," maybe some hot chocolate would be okay and Jane hadn't tipped so she would probably be okay.

Jane's eyes lit up. Idea! "You know what we should totally do?" she asked Dani breathlessly, "We should totally ambush the adults in the morning. They'll never know what hit them!"

That was an idea...except, "Aren't we adults too though? Technically?" Dani pointed out, "And I'm staff," which wasn't to say they couldn't have fun, it was just harder to do so sometimes. Had to make a good impression while away from school if possible.

"You know what I mean." Jane wrinkled her nose at Dani and pondered this dilemma. Now there was a concept. When she thought of the Mansion's adults, she tended to think of the teachers, not herself or her peers. Authority figures. Guess you grew up when you weren't looking, Jane. "But yeah, true," she admitted reluctantly. "I think the only other adult on this trip is Mr. Kane. Do you think he's pro-snowball fight? Or will he become all glare-y?"

"He's Canadian?" Dani wasn't sure if that meant he was pro-snowballs or not. It had to mean he was more comfortable in the snow at least, "I guess pro-snowball. He likes hockey."

"Good enough. I'll risk it. Although..." She trailed off and sipped her drink. She could see where it would look bad if she and Dani led a frozen revolution against the trip organizer. "We could ambush the kids, instead," she offered. "I'm not picky. Really all I want is to throw snowballs at someone."

"Well, then," Dani paused and looked around conspiratorially for other students around, "What about now?"

Jane let out a quiet squeal and started to pull her boots on. "I saw Jay head out the side door just a few minutes ago. C'mon! He can't have gotten far!"

Laughing, Dani abandoned her skis (they were rented to her through the hotel, so Dani wasn't worried about losing them with the staff around) and followed Jane back outside, her feet not hurting so badly anymore. Maybe her feet were adjusting or maybe it was just because she wanted to play in the snow. Scooping up some snow, Dani hurled a snowball at Jane. She'd do for a target until they found someone else.
