Jan and Dani - Sharing Space
Feb. 12th, 2008 03:42 pmBackdated to a month ago. Two new suitemates discuss sharing space and (not) making messes.
Jan surveyed the room, trying to figure out where everything would go. Her dorm room was paid for through the rest of the semester, and for now she'd keep a lot of her clothes and other possessions there, but still, if she was going to be living here, the living room would need a bit of redecorating. Nothing had to go, but a little addition was necessary.
Dani's idea of decorating was having non-broken furniture and enough seating for everyone. Everyone being defined as "at least 10," which was why there were quite a few stools or beanbag chairs around and little else. She didn't have a clue about decorating and wasn't interested in learning. Her bedroom reflected this austerity as well except for a bright, intricately woven Cheyenne blanket on her bed. She had left any decor issues to Marie and was more than happy to leave them to Jan as well.
"Hey, Dani!" Jan greeted her new suitemate. "Don't worry, I'm not planning on messing up all of your stuff. I'm not even going to bring all of my stuff here, at least not yet. Just some, and then we'll see what else there's room for!"
"Hey," Dani didn't know Jan very well and wasn't sure how rooming with her would work, but they at least had separate bedrooms, so she didn't really anticipate much of a problem. She wasn't home much during the days anyways between school and work and everything else going on, "Do what you want. Marie decorated the living room, so feel free. I ain't got a preference."
"Ooh, really?" Jan grinned. "OK, then! I'll feel free to do what I want if you don't care. I didn't want to just, like, barge in and take over and whatever because it's your room, too, and I've never done this having a roommate or suitemate thing before."
Dani had a room to herself when she had first come to Xavier's and had hated it. As much as she kept to herself, she wasn't really a solitary person. Being around people was comforting to her, especially when they were loud and boisterous, even if she wasn't as much, "It ain't hard, just keep the common areas clean and your messes in your room and I do the same."
"Messes? I wasn't planning on making any messes. It's not like I want to live in a big mess myself. Plus," Jan grinned, "I don't have to take up that much space, you know."
Dani shrugged, there was always a mess sometimes, rain boots or notes to be organized or whatever. It wasn't a bad thing or a problem so long as it was cleaned up promptly and didn't linger. Besides, mess was different from dirt. Dirt Dani did not tolerate from when she kept house, "You have your room and half the living areas. There are already dishes and cooking things in the kitchen you can use," she didn't shop much, but when she did she spent her money on cooking utensils and household goods, not clothing or decorative items.
Jan wondered if Dani ever smiled. Maybe she was just having a bad day or something. "Do we have to draw lines in the living areas?" she asked, figuring Dani wouldn't be amused but it was worth a shot anyways.
She smiled, quite a lot actually, but Dani didn't understand Jan's idea of humor at all. She just didn't think the shorter girl was funny. "What?" she asked, confused. Why would they do that? It was stupid. Common areas were just that, common. To be shared.
"You know, so we know which half of the room is yours and which half is mine!" Jan replied, still grinning . This was looking to be a long semester.
That was really, really immature. Resisting the urge to make a catty remark, Dani headed towards the kitchen instead and got a glass of water. "Want one?" she asked, referring to the drink. "And do you cook?" she couldn't remember if the younger girl did or didn't, but she knew she hadn't seen her in the cooking class.
"Sure," Jan replied, "and yeah, I can cook. I don't think I'll be astonishing anyone any time soon with my mad cooking skills, but I've never ruined a dinner yet!"
"Just don't burn down the suite," Dani said a small smile cracking her features. "I'll see you later," she gathered her bookbag and headed out. Between school and work and Red X and everything else, she could get very busy.
"Bye!" Jan answered cheerfully, amazed at Dani's smile, and then she went back to the task at hand.
