Kurt and Amanda - Friday afternoon
Jun. 13th, 2008 05:25 pmAfter talking to Terry, Kurt makes one more stop before he leaves.
Today was a slightly better day that some of the others. She'd had a long talk with Sofia that morning - there'd been a couple of pots of tea during that one - and she was feeling a bit more in synch with reality today. In an effort to keep busy and stave off the tendency to lapse back into that fairy-tale perception, she'd even tidied her apartment a bit, doing a week's worth of dishes and clearing up the various bits of paper (covered in scribbles she took care not to look at) that had littered her apartment. Perhaps it was a sense of self-preservation that drove her, as a knock she'd sort of been expecting ever since Kurt's announcement on the journals sounded on the door.
He wouldn't have gone without coming to see her in person. Not Amanda, of all people. "Jel'enedra Are you at home?"
"Come in, Blue," she called back, pleased that her voice sounded almost normal. A quick glance at her reflection in a framed picture showed her a tired-looking, slightly scruffy girl, but nothing too extreme. Kurt apparently had enough on his plate already, if he was leaving as abruptly as this after a crisis or three. She even managed a smile as he came in. "Fly-by visit on your way out?" she asked.
There was, indeed, a bag in his hand, and he nodded. "I wanted to see you before I go, especially with what you said. I would not leave if you need me, you know that, yes?"
"Bad week. Norway was a little more exciting than it was supposed to be and it shook loose some of Emma's shoring up," she said frankly. "But I'll be all right. You obviously need to go and I can manage here. There's plenty of people who want to keep an eye out for me."
"If you are sure", Kurt answered, trying hard not to sound relieved. "As you say, I need to go, to clear my head. There was... a Brotherhood incident."
"The ambush?" She paused, digging through memories - some days her mind resembled the state of Jubilee's apartment, everything strewn every which way. A flash of blue skin, Kurt looking at her like she was going to disown him... "She was there, wasn't she." There was no need to clarify which 'she'.
"She was." Kurt swallowed. "And from the report, it seems she took an active part."
Amanda went silent, mouth drawing a tight line. Unlike her brother, she had no illusions about Mystique's methods, but she wasn't about to beat him over the head with that. "You going to look for her?" she asked instead.
Kurt's head snapped up, almost shocked. No one else had even asked about the possibility. "...I should have known you would guess, little sister." He paused, then, "I made a mistake, once, though I did not see it so then. If I had acted differently, none of this might have happened."
"I know you too bloody well, big brother." Even as she said it, she was getting images unspooling behind her eyes, Kurt over the past five years, and beyond, to those previous few fuzzy memories she had of her actual childhood before Rack. She blinked, taking a breath and willing them away. Not now. "This wasn't your fault, Kurt. Whatever you are, you're not a killer. You're an X-Man." She reached over to grip his shoulder. "Promise me you'll stay in touch and not do anything without talking to someone about it."
"I will not kill her", Kurt said gently, leaning into her hand. "As you say, I do not think I could do that. I will find her and then... we will see. I wish to talk with her, first."
"Promise me you'll check in," she repeated, a bit more vehemently. "I know you believe she won't hurt you, Kurt, but after this, and the people she's with... I don't want anything to happen to you."
"That is one of the things I mean to discuss with her", was the grimmer response. "I believed she would not see me hurt, before this. But I could easily have been on that plane. I will check in with you daily."
"You'll have someone coming after you if you don't, mind," she warned, but a bit less intently before and she leaned in and kissed his cheek, feeling the fur soft beneath her lips. "I worry about you."
"I would never wish for you not to", he said, wrapping his arms around her. "You would not be the sister I know if you did not... and if I do not call, you may... you should... tell my team and yours what you know."
If anything happened to him she was going to flay that blue bitch alive. Amanda's arms tightened a little around his neck before she made herself relax. "How long do you think you'll be gone?" she asked.
"It is hard to say", was the best he could offer. "The last time I looked for her, she let me find her before too long. I do not expect she will do the same this time."
"Funnily enough, what with what she's been up to," came the wry reply. Amanda loosened her hug and leaned back. "Whatever happens, take care, Blue. There's been enough kidnappings this month."
Kurt, on the other hand, didn't let go. "I am very hard to kidnap", he reminded her. Of course, it wasn't impossible, and the Brotherhood certainly knew that.
And there were worse things than kidnapping. But she didn't need to say that. "See you when you get back," she said instead.
"First thing", he promised, finally releasing her. "And Amanda... please tell no one what I am doing. They would stop me."
"Just don't do anything stupid, Blue. Use your head as well as your heart, yeah?" She poked him gently in the chest. "Be smart."
"I will do the best I can." He leaned down to kiss her forehead. "And if you need me, call me back. Whatever I may be doing, I will come."
"Same goes for you." She gave him another squeeze and stronger smile. "Now, get on with you."
A nod and a smile in return, and Kurt stepped back and moved for the door. He glanced back before stepping out and said quietly, "I meant what I said on the journal. Be well, Amanda."
She nodded and held the smile until the door closed behind him. Then her expression crumbled and she reached into her pocket to where a stub of crayon waited.
