Thanks to her super-spyness, Amanda has a birthday present for Angelo too. It comes as something of a surprise, but not a bad one.

Amanda leaned back in her chair, rubbing her belly slightly. "Uff. Full," she mock-complained. As friends of Doug, they tended to get the Mama Lupe special treatment. "So, good birthday so far?" she asked Angelo, brimming with suppressed glee. With just a little bit of nervousness tossed in.

Angelo gave her a satisfied grin, finishing off the last of his food. "Really good. Thanks."

"Yay. I know it wasn't anything special, but after all the drama lately, simple is good." She glanced down at her bag, which had a large brown envelope poking out of it. "Ready for your present? I promise it's safe for the public," she added, grinning wickedly. "At least this part."

"Other part's for later, huh?" he asked, amused, then nodded. "Yeah, I think now can be present time."

"Definitely later. Or at least, not in the middle of a restaurant - there's limits to the exhibitionism," she teased. Reaching down, she pulled out the envelope. "I, um, I've sort of been working on this for a while. Got Bishop to help with some of the police stuff, Doug on some of the computer hacking. 'S not the usual birthday thing, but I figured it'd be something you'd like. Hopefully." Realising she was babbling, she cut herself off and held out the envelope. "Happy birthday."

"What's..." Abandoning the question half-asked, he decided just to find out for himself, tipping the envelope's contents to the top and pulling them out.

There was a moment of stillness when he saw what was in his hands, then he smiled crookedly. "Should've known you were up to somethin' with your mystery research projects."

Her answering smile held relief. "What's the point of having the secret spy training if I can't use it for good?" she replied. "It's not much, but that's pretty much everything I could dig up on your Dad. I talked to Juanita some, too, about what she was told and the rest." She reached over and touched his face briefly. "After Kyrgyzstan, I figured it'd help, to have something concrete. I was already working on it, just dug a little deeper."

"It'll help a lot, I think", he said honestly. He glanced down at the sheaf of papers in his hands again, flicking through the police reports, noting the lack of photos, scene of crime reports, autopsy reports... "How much did you tell Mom about all this...?" The question trailed off at the end, as he took a second, harder, look at a page of test results.

"Not much - she wasn't really up for talking too much about the details, and I figured it'd be better coming from you if there's anything you wanted to ask about." She caught his attention and leaned forward. "What?"

"This." He turned the sheet round for her to see, poking at a certain spot. "Why would they even test him for the X-Gene?"

She peered at the page. "Huh. Maybe there was something odd that they thought might be mutant-related?" she suggested. "I'm not really the big science brain - maybe you could ask Moira or Paige or even Garrison about standard police ops? I can always check with Bishop to see if it's a standard thing." She chewed her lip a little. "Your Mum never mentioned anything?"

"Never said a word." He stared thoughtfully at the back of the paper. "Don't have a clue if those mean negative or positive, either. But... nah, he wasn't a mutant, she'd've told me."

"It'd make sense that she would, if she knew whether he was or not. But yeah, get one of the egg-heads to translate that for you before you go talking to her?" Amanda was wondering if she'd inadvertently opened a kettle of fish with her present. Maybe she should have gone for a nice, simple watch or something.

"I mean", Angelo said quickly, looking up at her face and seeing her expression, "it's not a bad thing if he was. Just... a thing I'm gonna have to ask her about."

Reassured, Amanda nodded. "And I'm sure if she hasn't said anything it's because either he wasn't, or she didn't know. Just hope I haven't made any drama, that's all."

"There won't be drama", he promised her. "If there's anythin', it's family business, an' this is all good stuff to know anyway."

"I did good, then?" she asked, smiling a little.

"You did real good. An' I'll prove it later."
