Jan decides to check in on the school's newest student, gets hit on, and invites him to go to the mall with her.

Jan was having to do a lot of RA stuff lately. With Dani gone and possibly dead or worse, all of the RA duties were falling to Jan. Not that there as usually too much of that, though, especially with this school year's dramatic drop in the number of students. As a whole, the kids were a good bunch, there were just a few who seemed to like to get into trouble a lot. Unlike the visit she had paid to Karolina the day before, this one should go a lot better. Time to see how the new kid was settling in, face-to-face.

Julian was listening to music and checking his email, instead of doing homework, when he heard a knock on the door. Books lay strewn about the bed, his suit was still crumpled up against the baseboard- behind the door- and the mountain of boxes was still constructed, but otherwise the room was moved into. He got up from the desk, turning the music down on the laptop before heading for the door. When he opened the door, Julian was pleasantly surprised- as usual- by the girl who had knocked. "Hello, beautiful," Julian said, giving her a smirk, "and who might you be?"

Jan fought back a snicker, forcing herself to refrain from asking if that line ever really worked. Either the kid had missed her journal post, which wasn't really that surprising, or he was into staff members. Either way, worlds of no. "Hi, I'm Jan, the RA at this madhouse. That was Lorna's line, but she's not here, and you didn't make a journal post so no one got to throw that line at you. Or maybe they did in person. But hey, welcome to the madhouse! You've probably figured that out for yourself already. I just wanted to see how you're doing, see if you're settling in ok."

Julian recalled that RA's were some type of authority figure and let the door shut just a little bit- not necessarily hiding anything, just cautious. "Oh, I thought I had made a post to the online forum journal things. The Professor told me it would be a good idea to introduce myself, so I actually did that before I got settled in." He remembered his arrival quite clearly and that Karolina had mentioned it was a requirement to write on them. "Am I in some sort of trouble?"

"No, you're not in trouble... I think," Jan said. "Unless you did something wrong, and then you might be, but I hope not, because we've had enough of that recently. And if you made a post, you made it to one of the super secret ones. There's more than one. Everyone gets a personal one with your name attached, and it's all yours. There's also the main one, which is used for announcements and stuff. Some people don't read the personal ones, but they'll read that one to know stuff that's going on. And then the students have one. They're for the students only, but everyone knows they're there." She grinned. "A lot of people you'll talk to on the journals, even the ones who aren't at the mansion, used to be students here."

"Networking us already," Julian grinned, "that's helpful to know thanks." The door opened a little bit more. "I guess I'll have to make that post then, but to answer the first question though, yeah I'm settling in okay. So far I've met Karolina, Nori, Callie and Nathan- and everyone has been great so far. My only complaint is about the weather outside…I mean, damn." He wondered what passed as a swear word around here. "I'm used to hot summers and warm winters- and I was not ready for this." He cocked his head to the side ever so slightly, "So what does an RA do around here?"

"Well, I'm supposed to be here for you guys to talk to in case you have problems with stuff," Jan explained, "and I am, but apparently some people just ignore that. I'm not the police or anything, but I try to make sure the rules are being followed, make sure rooming stuff is ok. Not that I'm a mind reader or an empath or anything, so I won't just know if something's wrong unless someone tells me. Oh, and before you ask, I have wings, I zap things, and I can shrink all the way down to a teeny-tiny size."

It took a moment for Julian to realize that she wasn't joking. He went up onto the tips of his toes and tried to get a peak at her wings, "Wow, that's really cool." Julian wondered what she meant by zap for a moment but let it pass. "Did you get a file on me or anything? I just ask because I don't want my criminal past to single me out. I'm here to learn and to get a handle on my ability." He smiled again, "Which is telekinesis by the way."

"This is, like, the place for second chances," Jan told Julian seriously. "Doesn't matter what you did before you came here, as long as you remember that you're starting over here and don't go off getting yourself into trouble, either with people here or off in the real world where you could get yourself arrested again, no one will hold what happened before you came here against you. Well, most people won't. Some people are idiots. Like Forge. And he's a second chancer, too, like a lot of people around here."

As comforting as it was to know that he had a clean slate here, Julian was once again reminded that his slate had to be wiped clean by his father- it was the main reason he was here. "I'm glad to hear it," it was a half truth, but he was used to hiding those from his parents. They'd ask him where he was going last spring and he'd tell them to the beach or pool, when he was actually heading out to train his powers with other members of the group. "Hey, do you know that town I passed on the way in? Salem Center, I think?"

"Yep!" Jan said. "There's plenty of stuff to do there, so you don't have to worry about thinking you're stuck out in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do. I'm a local, went to high school there. Also, the city's not too far off, and there's a bus run... well, there was a bus run on Saturdays, but buildings got all smashed up and Amanda, she's the one who does the driving, is out of town. Maybe I should see about starting it up again."

He'd only been to NYC once and that had been long ago. "Yeah, Kevin was telling me about what happened. I was wondering more about the town though- you're from around here, is there a mall or anything?" It was cold out and all signs pointed to it getting colder, if he was going to continue to live here, he was going to need a winter coat.

"Of course there's a mall!" Jan laughed. "This is New York; we have everything! OK, so this isn't the big city right here where you're standing, but it's not that far off. I can drive you into town if you need. I don't know if you can drive or what. We also have cars you're allowed to use if you have a license and permission, but since you don't know the area it's probably best to go with someone who does, anyway."

"Oh, I can drive, but my parents didn't trust me to travel across the country and actually arrive here without further embarrassing them." He almost never shared that sort of information with people, his family had drilled that into him since he was able to toddle. "Um, any chance you can forget I said that?" He quickly tried to change the subject, "When would you be available for going to the mall?"

"Whenever you want," Jan said, bypassing the statements before the last question. "Sometime this weekend ok? Give you a chance to settle in this week, and then we can have tons of fun shopping! We can see if other people want to come, too, if you want."

Julian was letting his guard down around her, she was disarming, but he didn't mind. People here were a lot friendlier than they were back home, but he figured it had something to do with him being the new guy-and among an exclusively mutant population. Julian wondered what the local flatscan population was like and if they even knew that this school was here. He smiled, "Thanks, Jan, let me know when you're thinking of heading in and I'll join you."

"Sure, and if you do want people to come with us, just remember my car can only hold a few more people. See you this weekend!"
