Angel and Julian's first kiss at midnight on New Years Eve. Backdated to 1/1/09.

OOC: A little late due to life events of various sizes and stress levels.

The clock was ticking down, only twenty minutes left before the ball would slowly side down the pole in Time Square- which was being repaired surprisingly fast- ringing in 2009. Julian was still in the kitchen with a few others and was pouring his latest attempt at hot chocolate into mugs for anyone to take; hoping he hadn’t added too much hazelnut syrup to the mix. Taking a mug for himself he found himself satisfied with the concoction and took another, heading off to find Angel.

Angel had been in the forefront of the group - at times it wasn't even that she was an incredible social butterfly but just that she really had no clue about being embarrassed or over thinking being social. But now she was more in the back and just putting down the book that she'd made for her final. If wishes were fishes, then she'd not only eat for a year but also have her friends and teacher back. She was trying to shake it off now because they should be remembered with joy now.

Julian knocked on her suite door, carefully balancing the two mugs so he didn’t spill too much of their contents. He’d been very careful on the stairs and was starting to wish Nathan would hold their little training sessions a bit more frequently; it would have been much easier to float the mugs, but as it was they were too fragile. The past couple weeks had been nice, not having classes and having little to nothing in the way of responsibilities. All Julian had been doing was watching movies and practicing making cocoa: he wasn’t about to complain. Angel had been around too and they were getting closer every day, much to his pleasure. It seemed like it was still too soon to get back into a relationship- Cas had been the first woman he saw exclusively back home and the pain of her betrayal was still fresh. It was, however, nice to have a friend around with whom he shared so many similar interests.

The great thing about it being a smaller school was that it narrowed down who could be knocking - the usual culprits either didn't knock or knocked and then came in right after. When she opened the door, the slightly depressed look on her face melted away and Angel beamed at Julian. "You're a sight for sore eyes," she laughed, especially when she started to sniff at the cups in his hands. "Decided to escape the crowd? Come on in, everyone's - well, elsewhere, right now."

He stepped inside, handing a cup of warm cocoa off to Angel as he passed through the doorway. “I’ve had my fill of the kitchen and the rec room today- been making hot chocolate since we got done cleaning up from dinner.” He took another long sip from his mug. “What have you been up to, Angel? I haven’t seen you that much the last couple of days.”

She made groaning noises as she took a big sip of chocolate, enjoying yet another perk of her powers as the steam parted across her face. "Not much," Angel finally responded, heading toward one of the couches in the common where she plopped down, careful not to spill. "Mom was in town for a bit so we spent some time together over the holidays. And the guys down at the station had a party, which was fun. What about you?"

“All that sounds like a lot more fun than I’ve been having here,” Julian sat down next to her, a little closer than two friends would probably sit. “I’ve been tearing through the DVD library in the rec room- I think I’m going to get a Blue-Ray player or something, the picture on those things, just amazing.” He took a drink from his mug and settled into his seat- there was a little under a quarter hour left until 2008 was over. His mind drifted for a brief moment, remembering everything that had happened in the last year. After the moment passed he turned his attention to Angel. “The rest of my time has been spent developing,” he clinked his mug to hers, “the perfect cup of cocoa. Glad you like it, babe.”

"Better watch it or you'll get put on permanent hot chocolate duty if word gets out that it's you making this fantastic hot chocolate," Angel laughed, smiling shyly at the 'babe' thing. At least she wasn't a walking blush anymore - she was starting to be able to control that. A little. Sometimes. "It was time well spent, anyway. You could totally have people buy this." She settled back against the couch and ignored that her shoulder brushed his a little. "Looking forward to anything in this soon to be new year?"

Julian shrugged, “Getting better with my powers, I guess. Getting to know certain people around here,” he made eye contact, “a bit better. My family was never really big on New Year’s Resolutions. Actually, the first time I heard about them was in, like, third grade, when our teacher asked everyone in the class what theirs were. Would you believe I was the only one who didn’t have one or even know what they were?” Julian scoffed and raised his mug to his lips before pausing, “True story.” He took a sip of cocoa, “What about you, Angel? You have a resolution for 2009?”

She just gave him a look before giggling into her drink. "Not so much a resolution, really. I need to decide if I'm gonna sign up with the firestation all the way or keep being an intern. I need to work on my powers, too. Dude, I totally discovered a total new level of my powers a few months ago, so I'm back at square one on that level. Other than that, sit around, try not to let the weird of the school drag me down, hang out with my roommates, flirt with you - same old, same old."

“Well, of course, you have to flirt with me, that’s just a given.” Julian smiled and gave Angel a wink and chuckled lightly. He took a sip of cocoa and stole a subtle glance at his pyrokinetic classmate, ending on her lips. The final bells of 2008 were fast approaching now and the thought of kissing Angel at the stroke of midnight entered his mind, though not for the first time since he’d met her. For the past six years, Julian had rung in the new year with a kiss at midnight- he certainly didn’t want to break with tradition now, but he also didn’t want to ruin the friendship he’d established with Angel over the past few weeks. Julian settled on clearing his throat, for now, and sliding a little closer to Angel on the broken-in couch. “New level with your powers? Tell me about it.” He looked into her emerald green eyes and turned toward her, giving her his undivided attention.

Their thoughts were running along similar veins - thought she was trying her best not to look at his mouth because she was afraid she'd just make a fool of herself. Drooling was one sure fire way of making sure she didn't get a kiss. Though, Angel thought with an internal sigh, it was going to be a huge build up and then she'd get a kiss on the cheek. Damn her overactive imagination. "Well, you've seen that whole fire shield when I use my powers? The next step is, uh..." She rubbed the back of her neck when he didn't drop his gaze. "Total fire all over, no shield - just me. It's kind of freaky but awesome, though I've only been able to get back to it a few times. So more fire, more heat, more everything."

A ‘hot’ joke would be too easy right now,’ Julian thought as the air grew even more tense- not to mention warm. “That’s, um,” Julian paused, a little surprised at the sound that had just come out of his mouth- years of linguistics training and grammar lessons had drilled into him the need for good diction. ‘Get it together, Keller!,’ he chided himself. He took a moment, recollected himself and gave Angel a subtle smile. “That sounds like it’d be really amazing to see, but doesn’t that burn certain, oh I don’t know, articles of clothing off?” He glanced at her hand on her neck, “Are you okay?”

She immediately dropped her hand back to her mug and Angel gave him what she hoped was a reassuring smile. "Oh yeah, sorry, I flail around a lot when I talk; it's a habit I picked up from one of my uncles. And clothes? Well, it used to but most of my stuff these days are specially made - they don't feel any different but they can stand really high temperatures. A god send because I'd never use my powers if I went through clothes like that." And that topic of conversation was not helping her concentration!

“Ah,” Julian said, trying hard not to imagine Angel naked- and failing miserably. There were now only five minutes until midnight and each second was feeling excruciatingly long, likely due to the rather thick air of tension in the room. “Are you taking Mister Beaubeir’s class on fairy-tales and literature next semester?” The question came out of no where and was a bit of a surprise even for Julian, but he did his best not to let it show. “I mean, I’ve been reading some of those stories and they’re a lot darker than I remember from when I was a kid.”

It helped derail her current thought process a little bit, at least. "I don't know, I've got a pretty busy schedule next semester but it sounds like an awesome class." Angel firmly told herself that she would NOT be one of those girls who flitted about and took classes just because the nice boy with the cute mouth and hot butt did. 'Mmm...' She shook herself and blinked out of the trance she nearly put herself in. "I mean it sounds neat but I'm not a huge reader to begin with. I hope to take some courses in chemistry that'll let me set things on fire."

"You should be a natural at that then, right?" Julian grinned, completely aware of how stupid what he'd just said sounded. Only one way out of it now, and only a couple minutes were left before the ball dropped in Times Square. "Angel, I..." This had never been difficult before, why was he having trouble now. 'Just tell her you want to kiss her at midnight...and get slapped.' They'd been flirting back and forth since they'd met, but there was still a good amount of doubt in Julian's mind. Instead he just shook his head, kept smiling and took a drink from his mug.

"You what?" she prompted, finishing her drink off. Without having to wait for it to cool, Angel always tended to finish hot food or drink faster than her peers. He'd said her name and then 'I' and then petered off. Oh no, she wanted to know what he was going to say.

Julian continued to drink his cocoa, practically chugging the rapidly cooling liquid as he tried to figure out what to say. Far too quickly, it was gone. Setting his mug down, Julian turned toward Angel, gazing into her green eyes, fully aware that she was looking back at his. "I was saying that, well..." Julian looked away for a moment, his smile gone with a moment of doubt before he turned back to her, smiling and projecting nothing but confidence. "Only one minute until midnight. Then we have a whole new year, a completely fresh start...what would you say to ringing in the new year with a kiss?" His head tilted to the side slightly, ready to take a slap across the face- though he sincerely hoped not.

"Yes, please. Um. I mean. Sure! Yes." Angel clamped her mouth shut as she put her mug next to his and rubbed her palms against her knees, trying not to embarrass herself further. The fact that Julian seemed, well, a little nervous (or maybe that was just her) actually helped calm some of her nerves down. And she thought it was absolutely adorable that he'd asked.

Now she just had to resist setting the couch on fire...

He hid his surprise well- or at least he thought he did. His cheek wasn't stinging and that was the important part. "Ah, good," was all he could muster as he turned his body towards hers. Emboldened by her eagerness, which both was and was not a surprise, Julian reached out and took one of Angel's hands, giving it a firm squeeze. His eyes darted from her lips, to her eyes, to her breasts- 'No! Bad Julian,' he scolded himself. The seconds ticked away as several groups throughout the mansion started the count down. Ten, they began to move closer, Julian closed his eyes. Nine, eight, he fought down that queasy feeling in his stomach, he really liked Angel, but was this too soon? Was he shutting out other options? Seven, six, five, he could feel her breath on his own lips now; their faces so close they might as well already be kissing. Four, three, two, their lips brushed each others for a moment before the others around the mansion screamed out "One! Happy New Year!" in rather jarring unison. Upstairs, away from the eyes of the other residents of the mansion, it certainly was a happy new year.

It was a very close thing but none of the fire extinguishers that had tripled around the mansion since Angel's arrival were needed. She had her own set of doubts about what it might mean and where it might lead but, really, he tasted like chocolate and that alone chased away any thoughts for much, much later.
