Jay and Dani become roommates and find that they should have done it sooner rather than later.
Moving in with Jay hadn't been what Dani had expected, but the move made sense for both of them. Fortunately for her, she didn't have a lot, just clothes and a few personal trinkets. She wasn't a fan of shopping at random or collecting things, but she had a nice collection of music she'd bought from itunes. Setting her laptop up on the desk, she turned it on randomly and Country Bumpkin came on by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. That was a good song. Very old school. Singing along to it, she worked to put her clothes away and unpack.
Jay had made sure his room was clean because he wanted Dani as a roommate. It was surprising he hadn't thought of it before, out of everyone in the mansion, he got along with her the best, sharing the same fondness for country and enjoying the simple little things that their types would like. Between them, a peace settled over the room and there was little that needed to be said, especially when Loretta Lynn's sweet soft voice pleasantly warmed his heart and the crossed feet atthe end of his bed bounced, laying on his back and staring up at the ceiling.
Sitting up, his door was open and he could see her directly across from his room, lip syncing the part of Conway Twitty. "A bar room girl with wise and knowing eyes slowly looked me up and down... and she said I wonder how on earth that country bumpkin found his way to town.." His grin grew when he caught her eye.
"So I said come on country bumpkin..." Dani met his eyes and wandered towards his room. They hadn't been the best of friends when she had first moved in, which seemed strange looking back, it worked out fine that they were roommates now. They were similar in a lot of ways, "How you doing?" she asked, leaning on his door frame.
"Ah'm okay. Bored.... day dreamin' of the summer." He regarded her thoughtfully. "Ah'm thinkin' of reapplyin' to Silver to be their bartender again. Ah kinda miss it. Yanno? Paid good too."
Dani nodded, that was a good idea. And Silver would hire him blue or not. Perhaps especially blue, "I need to find a job. Been checking the want ads but," she shrugged "ain't found nothin' yet. I've been there and gone too much for school, gotta reapply for the fall and need to find something in the mean time. It'll happen. Maybe Silver wants a book keeper?"
He propped a knee up and waved it back and forth, nodding. "Maybe. You never know. School's out for me too." Jay dropped back down on the bed. He could do it, but the metal blades sticking out through his shoulders made it uncomfortable and he was forced to eventually roll on his side and prop his head up with his hand.
"This is the worse," he confessed, blowing out a sigh, smirking faintly to the background music."Why don't you try somethin' different? With more people around?" That had every potential of going bad but he still suggested it.
Dani raised an eyebrow and went to sit on his desk chair, propping her bare feet on his bed, "You crazy?" she asked, entirely serious. She knew he was not more crazy than she was, but not the point. "And anyways, I ain't the most sociable sometimes. Fears, fear, ain't it? And I like it...maybe too much. I can control myself...but I don't always want to."
"Too bad you couldn't do to yourself what ya did to me. Ah have to say, Ah feel a whole lot better, like Ah can focus again. Ah feel like mahself. Not great, like Ah know what yer talkin' about, not wantin' to but yeah, maybe ya need like a telepath to gut your brain or somethin'?"
"I think I'm okay," Dani replied, examining the ends of her hair for split ends. "Ain't even been much for happy go lucky, you know? I leave that for Jan. Ain't gonna piss on someone else's party though either." reaching out with a braid she tickled his nose. "But you find out if Silver needs a girl to do books or something."
Jay leaned back, swatting at her playfully but then he grabbed her hand and pulled her to the bed with him. "Ah know someone that needs a girl right now," he grinned, but it came out completely wrong from the way he'd meant it.
"Oh yeah?" Dani fell against him in the bed, laughing "Who? 'Cause I won't just go with anyone," that was almost an utter lie right there, but that was okay. Dani seemed to either jump on the first guy that paid her any attention or be single. "I like my men...manly. And in cowboy hats."
With anyone else, Jay didn't want to touch or be near them but with Dani, his inhibitions were thrown out the door and he knew it was likely the same for her. Laughing he tugged her hands behind her back and rolled on top of her, tilting his head to the side. "Hello Darlin'," he lowered his voice more than the changes had made, trying to do a poor mock of Conway Twitty. Tipping an invisible hat to her. "How you doing.." A favourite lyrics to an old Conway Twitty song. He'd swear Forge would die and Kyle would roll his eyes. But Dani, she appreciated it.
And if it had been anyone other than Jay, Dani would already be attacking in her defense...and ensuring they never lived to attack again. Thankfully, this was Jay. "Hey now, Country Bumpkin!" she replied, laughing, "How the crops today?" she knew of all the Guthrie's Sam was more the farmer than the others, or at least, the others at the school and the ones still at home were pretty young.
"Didn't your mama ever tell you not to play with Indian Girls? We might scalp you!" she reached up, tickling him with nimble fingers.
The young Guthrie was very ticklish and buckled to her, cowering in a frenzie to get away and landed him on the end of the bed. He looped his fingers through his jeans and hung his hands, slouching in a cowboy posture. "Well Ah reckon ma and pa told me somethin' but in the face of a tan beauty, Ah ain't got nuttin' to do but bring her home and marry her." He strutted to the side of the bed and leaned down to scoop her up, grooms style.
Shrieking, Dani hit Jay about his back and shoulders, though not enough to hurt him, "Put me down you loon!" she cried, Dani was easily as tall as Jay and probably outweighed him by several pounds. While he was tall and wiry thin, she was solid and had wide hips, though she was far from overweight. "But sure, I'd marry you."
Jay walked her over into her room and dumped her on her bed, grinning ear to ear. "All right, but you gotta sleep in your own bed till you wear mah ring," he slurred in a thick southern accent that came easy for them. "Til then, that's mah bed and Ah reckon you'll be smart and stay outta it til' yer mah Mrs." He winked at her. "Unless ya wanna consumate early?"
"I ain't known for my chastity," she replied back, sitting up, still grinning. "And I'd hate to give you blue balls..." okay, so that was bad, but she couldn't resist. It was Jay. And he was blue. It had to be said. Poking him in the sternum she stood up and pulled a box out from under her bed, rifled through it for a minute and handed him a picture. It was of her wedding when she'd been 17. She stood in the picture, her hair braided up on her head with little white flowers in it and wearing a white dress with red beadwork on it. Sheldon, her husband, wore slacks and a tie.
Jay cringed at the bad joke and buckled at her poke, his wince replaced with the return of his grin. He took the photograph offered and dropped down on the corner ofher bed, his back to her as he studied the picture. "Oh, someone's pretty," he said with awe. "Who's this guy? Someone Ah gotta compete with?" he joked lightly. "Ah look good in ties," he said. In the nude.
Nudging Jay with her shoulder she said, "Nah, that's Sheldon. My ex-husband. Not the happiest wedding picture, ain't it?" he knew she'd been married, but she hadn't really mentioned her husband much, either before or after the divorce nor had she shown anyone the pictures. Well, the picture, it had been a quick few minutes in front of the justice of the peace, nothing fancy. Not that Dani was a fancy girl. "You always look good."
Jay snorted, but didn't comment. Instead, he stared down at the picture, then flipped it over checking for a date. "Where's he at now?" Jay didn't know much about her marriage, if anything. Only that she had a son which she never talked about.
"Dunno," she shrugged, "I guess on the rez.in Oklahoma. We didn't end on a good note," they'd been married for a month when he'd kicked her out and she'd ended up at Xavier's. When she'd gone back a few months later with Forge, he'd hit her and Forge had used some sort of taser thing to stop him. At the time, she'd been devestated. Now, she saw what a pathetic, miserable son of a bitch he was. She was much better off without him, "He don't owe me alimony, he don't owe me child support, he don't owe me nothin'. And I don't owe him. Ain't ever gonna owe another man."
Jay bit his bottom lip and offered the picture back to her. "Who needs 'em right. Especially when you got ol' blue balls," Jay countered, nudging her back in the shoulder before he stood. "Ah reckon Ah better be doin' something productive cause sittin' here around you's gonna make me lazy," he replied, catching the door frame on his way out and pulling himself into a stretch. "You got plans?" he asked.
"Nope," Dani put the picture in the box under her bed. Maybe one day she'd get rid of it, but for now, that was a good place to keep it. "Was thinking about seeing what was on TV and eating kettle corn. Maybe surf through some more jobs. You?" She wasn't exactly the life of the party.
"Nuttin'. You wanna go for a walk on the grounds?" he asked, turning around, walking backwards towards the door. He needed air, a little space to roam and really, he was feeling cooped up now that they were doing something close to settling.
That was a thought. "Sure," she agreed, putting some shoes on. It was warming up, but it wasn't hot yet so she grabbed an over sized hoodie too. "Ready when you are, o' husband of mine."
