"Is that really you, Jada?" Leo shifted position slightly, leaning forward on his knees to see the sculpture the girl had made. They'd played in the sand tray for only a few minutes before Jada had moved to close to one of the potted plants beside the table and a spark flared. After he'd managed to get her calmed down, they were now in the center of the room, playing with the silly putty. Jada was working on a picture of herself and her mother. The sculpture of her mother had been fine, but then Jada began working herself. She first created a normal looking girl, even putting in brown eyes and long strands of brown putty to act as her cornrows, but then grabbed a huge fistful of the blue putty and smushed the whole thing into a misshapen blob.
"Yeah." Jada nodded solemnly to emphasize her words. She set the blob down and began pinching sharp, misshapen stars out of yellow putty and embedding them, points-down, in the wreck of her sculpture until it was a field of spikes. "I hurt people. I don't wanna be bad like that, but...I can't stop it."
"You are not bad," Leo said firmly. "You have an ability that you are still learning to control." Leo leaned back to grab the rubber gloves that he had set behind him, and reached over to carefully grip both of Jada's hands in his own. He met the young girl's eyes with his own and spoke gently, but with as much confidence and certainty as he could must. "You are a kind, caring, smart, and lovely young lady, and--"
He was cut off by a loud boom, and barely had enough time to raise up his eyes when everything went bright, then dark, then silent.
--
Tamika felt the room shake with impact as she reached under her desk, searching for the pen she had just dropped. The loud explosion filled her ears as she crossed herself. "Lord, have mercy."
--
Jasmine had just saved and closed the first draft of her report on the Peterson twins, and was standing up to go to the lounge to refill her tea when the wall that separated her office and the front waiting room blew apart. She screamed as she was pushed to the ground by the debris, and struggled to get up. "Leo! Tamika!" She shouted as she fought her way past the smoke and rising flames. She was almost to the door when there was a creak from above her and everything went black.
--
A strange kind of quiet descended over the building. In the front waiting room, Tamika was face down on the floor, bleeding and still, her desk partially collapsed onto her. The desk was partially protecting her from the flames, but could not protect her from the smoke filling the building. The wall behind her had blown apart backwards, and now there was no separation between the waiting room and Jasmine's office. Jasmine was crushed under the beam of her door, half in the office and half in the hallway. The ceiling had also been blown apart and exposed the upstairs, which was the only thing helping Tamika and Jasmine, as the smoke was rising upwards, allowing them some clean air to breathe. In the far office at the end of the hall, Leo lay slumped against the outside wall. The explosion had hit the observation room on the east side of the building behind the front office. Shards of glass sprinkled Leo's office, and the wooden shelf below the observation window had smashed right into Leo's head.
Fire was sparking from every electrical outlet, and surrounding Jada, partially buried on the floor by the wall from the observation room, small shards of glass covering her. Her quiet gasps for air as the smoke continued to billow were the only sounds other than the crackling of fire and the creaking of wood as the old house was surrounded in flame.
