After a long, emotional day, Doreen finally gets her birthday cake.

Doreen was a mess. She hadn’t showered yet, so she was covered with dirt, sticks and twigs. The twigs were sticking out of her hair at odd angles and her tail drooped low. Monkey Joe sat next to her, his cheeks nuzzling her legs which were scrapped up from a romp she had little memory of and her mouth tasted like pine cone.

This had been, without a doubt, one of her worst birthdays ever.

"Hey Dori." Callie cautiously made her way into her room, her hair wrapped in a towel. She was fresh from a bath, and she was ready for bed. For as worried about her roommate as she was, she realized there was nothing she could have done other than what she had. So to take her mind off her anxiety, the rosy girl had decided on a long soak with a book. The book was dropped on her bed as Callie herself sat down upon it.

"Are you okay?"

Doreen looked up and tried to smile and failed she settled on, “I’m sorry if I scared you.”

"I just didn't know what was going on," came the reply as Callie rose and knelt in front of the other girl. "I'm not going to make you talk about it if you don't want to, you don't have to explain anything to me. But, do you need a hug?"

Doreen was curled up in a ball, her knees hugged up to her chest her head resting on selfsame knees, “It… happens sometimes. I really should’ve told you.”

"Dori, it's fine. I just wanted to make sure you were okay." Callie paused and tried to meet her roommate's eyes. "Are you?"

Doreen shook her head, “I don’t know; I just wanted to talk to my dad!”

Now that was something that Callie knew well, or at least in some regard. The not being able to talk to the one person you wanted to. "I know. I'm sorry. I wish there was something I could do... do you want your present? Or cake?"

“You didn’t have to get me anything,” Doreen said, though her tail perked up a bit at the last one, “There’s cake?”

There was a broad smile on Callie's rosy face. "I know. And yes. And if I remember correctly a certain someone has an affinity for Snickers?"

“I like snickers,” Doreen said, sitting up a bit, “So does Monkey Joe. They’re the best candy bar ever.”

"Well, do you think a Snicker's cake would help at all? Because there might be one in the kitchen."

“There is?” Doreen said, “Oh my gosh that would be SOOO good!”

"Well there is a chocolate cake, with peanut butter nougat type frosting, and peanuts, and caramel..."

Doreen stood up. The aspirin they had given her would work better if there was food in her stomach, of that she was sure, “Yeah! Let’s go!”
