Callie and Yvette discuss prom, boys, and being teenagers.

The library. A quiet refuge from the hustle and bustle of the mansion at large. A place where one could not only catch a nap in the stacks, but study and do homework, if one was so inclined. The latter of these options was what Callie had in mind when seeking out the tome of stillness that day, taking over her usual table in the process. It was not long however that the rosy girl discovered that she was lacking a very important reference book. The bright side was that she knew the exact location of the volume, so she was able to head directly toward its spot on the shelf.

As she wandered away from her table and into the rows of books, she noticed a certain small Albanian girl and decided to make a quick detour. The book would still be there waiting when she finished her conversation, and the paper's deadline was still a safe distance away. Besides, she could always spare a few minutes for a friend.

"Hey Yvette," Callie said as she made her way over to the girl. "How's it going?"

Yvette looked up, eyes glowing softly in the library's slightly subdued lighting. "Hello, Callie," she said with a smile. "It is, how you say? Going. So many exams for the end of the year to be studying for. And you?"

"Just working on a paper, forgot one of my references." Callie shrugged and gestured toward a chair. "Mind if I sit here? I promise to not bother you for too long. Just haven't seen much of you lately."

"Of course." Yvette lay down the over-sized novelty pencil she preferred to use, given her long fingers, with another smile. "I have the history paper, but I am nearly finished, so it is good to be taking the break, yes?" Her eyes glowed brighter with amusement. "And I have not been here - I was in the California for the visit with Kevin for a while."

"I know," came the excited response as Callie lowered herself onto the chair. "How was that? Did you have fun?"

"Oh yes, very much. I was needing the time away and it is always good to be with Kevin." Yvette tilted her head at Callie. "How about you? Did you have the good Spring Break?"

Callie was beaming. "Oh totally. Dad was in town so I got to see him for awhile, which was great. Almost didn't want to come back, but now I have summer to look forward to?"

"And the Prom, yes?" Yvette suggested. She knew most of the girls were excited about the dance, so it was a safe topic to turn to - family tended to be a minefield for so many people, she tried not to make assumptions any more.

"Yeah, Prom." Callie nodded in agreement. There was so much to be done beforehand, but even so she was more excited than worried about the upcoming dance. "Are you going?

"I think so. I do not have the partner yet. It is hard, when there are not so many boys to be asking, yes?" Yvette shrugged a little. "Do you have the partner?"

A small, contented smile appeared on Callie's face. "Yeah. Fred and I are going. But you can totally dance with him if you want or something. We're just going as friends."

Facial expressions were difficult to read given Yvette's mutation, but she managed to look taken aback a little. "Why are you thinking I was wanting to dance with Fred?" she asked, embarrassed, thinking about Monet's comment about doing... things with Fred. "I mean, we are the friends also and I would like to be dancing with him, but I am not thinking of him that way! Not like the boyfriend or anything!" She seemed flustered.

"I didn't mean it like that?" Callie etched her brow, the look of confusion very evident on her face. "Fred and I are just going as friends, and the point of prom is to have fun and dance, and we don't have a lot of guys and I didn't want you to think that I was going to monopolize him. I mean we're all friends here right?"

"Of course we are friends. I thought... It is not mattering what I am thinking. The Prom is for the good time, yes." Yvette backpedaled, not wanting to upset Callie.

"No no, go on. What's wrong Yvette?"

Yvette looked down at the table, fingers toying with her pencil. "I thought that you were thinking that I was liking Fred, because of his powers and mine..." It sounded silly, saying it. "Like Monet was saying, on my journal that time."

In another situation with another person this would be almost comical. But Callie had seen Yvette's reaction to Monet saying those things, so she figured it was something to take seriously. It had to be difficult for the smaller girl, not being able to touch people like she was. "Yvette, Fred's a great guy, so if you liked him it would be understandable. But, I don't know, I never thought that you should like him because you guys' powers are compatible. Like you should like someone because of who they are, not what we are. At least that's my opinion of everything."

"I believe that too. Only... when Monet said those things, it is making me realise that some people might think that way, so when you are saying I could be dancing with Fred..." Yvette stopped and looked up at Callie, giving a little, embarrassed laugh. "I am the silly girl, yes?"

Callie shook her head with a smile. "People believe what they want to believe, I think, and sometimes no matter what we say can change that. And I don't think it's silly! I mean I'm like pretty tall right? So all my friends would always push me to like the really tall guys." She shrugged. "And you know I didn't always like them. So I guess I can kinda see what you're saying? We may not fit into the mold of being normal, but that doesn't mean we're not."

Yvette responded with a small smile of her own. "Well, you are being in the right place. The school has many of the tall people, yes?" Sometimes it seemed a land of giants to the small Albanian. "And thank you, Callie, for not laughing at me. It is not the thing that is so important, but with my powers..." She trailed off, looking down at her gloved hands, then shook her head and looked up again, working on keeping the smile on her face. "One day I will be having the control and I will be looking backwards at myself and laughing at the foolish girl, yes?"

"We're teenage girls, I think it's in our genes to be silly or something." Callie giggled. "You're welcome. And I'm sure we'll all look back at ourselves and laugh, or at least manage a 'What were we thinking!?' in a few years, so you'll be in good company there."

"Well I should probably let you get back to your studies, and return to my own. I'll see you later?"

"Of course. Do not be working too hard, yes?"
