While singing in the rec room, Crystal is surprised by Doreen. Backdated.
Doreen had been watching a couple of minutes. She had originally intended to watch some TV down in the rec room with Monkey Joe. But it was otherwise occupied. At least the person in question was doing something Doreen felt was worth watching.
She wasn't a big karaoke person herself, but the concept always struck her as being fun. She waited until Miss Crystal was finished with the song she was on before saying anything.
"What are you playing? It looks like a lot of fun," she said as Monkey Joe tilted his head to one side and made a few inquisitive clicks of his own.
Crystal looked over at Doreen and Monkey Joe, looking a bit embarrassed. "It is called Singstar and is the ABBA edition."
Doreen brightened, "Oh, I've always wanted to play that. Well, I didn't know there was an ABBA version, but I do like to sing. I don't know if I'm all that good at it," Doreen said, thinking to her squeaky voice.
"You will not know until you try, yes?" Crystal said, holding out and offering a microphone to Doreen. "I have not played the other Singstar games. Apparently, there are many of them. I am a fan of ABBA, which is why I have this specific game."
"Really? I can try? I don't really know very many ABBA songs though, I mean, I guess I know one, but it's the one that everyone knows, you know?" she rambled, carefully taking the microphone so her claws wouldn't mess it up.
"If it is a song that everyone knows, it is sure to be on here," Crystal said, smiling. "I am assuming that you are referring to 'Dancing Queen', yes? It does seem to be a song known even to those who know little or nothing about ABBA."
"Yeah, that's the one I know. I mean, in middle school they had dances sometimes and I remember they played that one and it was cool," she said. After middle school she hadn't been to another dance until prom here. "I think I remember the words."
"Oh, you do not need to worry about whether or not you know the lyrics," Crystal explained. "They do appear on the screen, but are not actually necessary in order to play the game. It is odd, yes? The game is based around proper pitch, not the words, although I would think it is much easier to play by singing the correct words as they are intended to go with the music."
"So I could sing what I wanted?" she asked, looking up at Crystal. The older girl was so pretty, Doreen decided, she wished for a moment she could look like that. "What songs do you like? I can sing one that you like since you're letting me play your game."
Crystal nodded. "You could even make up your own words if you want to, I believe. I wonder if some people do that, just for fun, to see if they can sing in the proper pitch even if they are not actually singing the song itself. Also, I am not sure if I can pick a favorite song, I like so many ABBA songs! Perhaps 'Knowing Me Knowing You' or 'Waterloo' might be good to sing," she suggested, trying to think of which songs might be too hard to try for the first time.
Doreen didn't know either of those songs, but she thought about it, "Well, I can kind of read music," she had taken piano lessons years ago, and still knew how to read music, at least well enough for the two years of music theory classes middle school had thrown at her. "So if they have the notes go by on a staff I can maybe read that? I haven't had to for so long, but I think it would be a lot of fun to try to make up words for songs. Oh! If you sing with me then it will be easier for me to learn some of the songs, don't you think?"
"No notes, I am sorry; the game is not designed this way." Crystal thought for a moment. "Perhaps you can watch me through another song, this time while I am aware of your presence, and then we can sing together? There are two-player versions, plus you could have the microphone while I just sing to the side."
"Alright! That sounds like fun," Doreen said. "I'd like to watch you sing and it would be fun to sing together," Doreen agreed. Looking at the screen she reasoned it couldn't be too hard, you just had to know the songs.
Crystal smiled. "Let us begin!"
