Before his flight to the west coast, Forge and Crystal talk about their respective plans due to the recent changes to the team.
Forge rolled the last of his sleeveless basketball jerseys neatly, placing it on top of the stack before scooping the pile of clothes into his duffle bag atop the various magazines, DVDs, and portable media players that he'd need for the seven-hour commercial flight to San Diego.
The downside to a suddenly-smaller X-Men team, well one of them as Forge saw it, was the greater importance of having the team be mission-capable at any time. Which meant no grabbing the Blackbird for simple shuttle runs back and forth to the West Coast Annex unless absolutely necessary.
"I'll probably be spending weekends here when I can," he explained out loud to Crystal, without turning around. "But they're going to need me to set up the Annex to field an actual mission-capable team. No Cerebro and no full-on Danger Room means that they're going to have to make super-efficient use of the resources they have."
"Would they really need another Cerebro there?" Crystal asked. "Could another training room be built there, similar to or an exact replica of the 'Danger Room' here?"
"Don't know yet," Forge admitted, rummaging through the duffle to find his PDA and re-checking his notes. "Probably not financially practical, so it's kind of playing it by ear. Charles asked me to help set things up - it's certainly not going to be permanent. For me, anyway. My home's here, my team's here. And with Scott and Jean on the West Coast, believe me - my team needs me. Besides. You're here."
Crystal nodded thoughtfully. "So many people leaving the mansion, all at once... Yes, with Jean no longer here I have been thinking of ways in which I can make myself more useful, medically speaking. I have already done much studying, and while I already feel that I can be useful, I believe that receiving further official training in New York would be beneficial. I am not talking about becoming a doctor, of course, that would take many years and I wish to be qualified soon. Becoming a licensed Emergency Medical Technician here, yes, this would help and would not take too long."
Forge thought about it, then nodded. "You've done enough of the basics with Red X, yeah. And I'm sure Amelia would welcome the help. Smaller team, no Cyclops or Cable... shit, that leaves me as Captain Tactical, doesn't it? I hope not. We're going to have to be smarter, going to have to be better..."
He sighed and zipped the duffle, swinging it off the bed to the floor as he turned to face Crystal. "I don't like the idea of two teams. Splitting things up, it doesn't seem like a good idea. But it's the situation we've got, so I'm going to help make it work."
"It is the timing of it all that does not make much sense to me," Crystal replied. "To have all of this happen so soon after the beginning of school seems unsettling. Had the departures occured during the summer... well, events must occur when they must, I suppose. All we can do is make the best of the situation and put our skills to use. This is why I was more than happy to offer to teach Jean's classes, why I wish to be of even more assistance in the medlab, and perhaps it is now the perfect time for me to speak to Ororo about joining the team."
"Teaching and the medlab would mean you'd have more reason to be here, and I certainly won't argue," Forge blithely replied, before the last part of Crystal's words sunk in. "And... you're sure? I know we talked about this and... well, given everything that's gone on, it makes sense. Yes, it would be the perfect time."
He reached out and took her hands in his, squeezing them lightly. "It'll be an interesting time, that's for sure."
"I am not interested in being involved in combat," Crystal reminded Forge, "although I will do this if necessary. I am much more interested in being there as someone who gives medical attention rather than needing this. While I could do this in the medlab once the X-Men return from battle, I believe that being there before the return would be helpful. With Jean in California, no longer able to perform this function, I would like to be able to do this."
"Combat-capable medic, huh?" Forge rubbed his chin absently. "You and Laurie do make a pretty fierce team. I'll check in and see how that goes, surely."
Smirking, he gave an impish glance over his shoulder at the bed. "You know," he said in an overdramatic tone, "I do have an hour or two before I need to catch my flight..."
"I suppose we will just have to find some way to fill that time, then, yes?"
