Adrienne needs a new assistant, and Amara interviews for the position. She's all kinds of nervous, but ends up with a trial for the job!
Bare feet up on her desk in her downtown office, Adrienne played absently with her lighter, flipping it over her fingers as she waited for her next interview. She should have left them up to human resources, she realized. Her heart wasn't really in it today. Replacing Temp gave her no joy whatsoever, and for a brief moment she allowed everything she'd been keeping carefully in check to flood her thoughts- disappointment, anger, betrayal, even abandonment.
And before she could settle into any one emotion, Adrienne shut everything back up in her head again and kept playing with the lighter. Sometimes she felt like the mansion had made her into a more caring person, and sometimes she didn't think it had changed her at all. Everyone left eventually. Letting people in only set you up for disappointment.
She plastered a smile on her face when she spotted Amara approaching, but the effort didn't quite reach her eyes. "Hi Amara, I'm glad you could come," she said in as polite and enthusiastic a tone as she could muster as she rose from her seat and went to the doorway to usher the young woman inside. "Please, sit down. Can I get you anything?"
"Hi Adrienne," Amara said with a wide - if slightly - nervous smile. She'd never actually been to a job interview before - nor had a job before, but that was neither here nor there. It did help that she already knew Adrienne, but if she was being honest, the older woman did intimidate her a little bit. But she wasn't going to let that show, instead holding her head high and keeping the smile on her face. She could do this!
"No thank you, I'm fine. Thank you for the opportunity for the interview, I very much appreciate it."
"You're welcome," Adrienne said with a nod. "I should confess I'm slightly reluctant to hire another mansion resident since Miss Temple's departure, but I'm willing to be persuaded." Amara just had to wow her. "Tell me about your resumee, Amara."
"Well, I certainly don't have any plans to return home permanently at the moment. I still have three years left at college to complete, and I may stay on longer for graduate studies." She took a deep breath, preparing to give her spiel. "While I haven't held a position like this before, at home in Nova Roma I ran my father's household after the death of my mother. He was then a senator in the Nova Roman government, and we had a lot of guests for various dinners and events, which I was responsible for organizing, as well as a lot of visitors dropping by to speak to him. Since I've started college, I've been involved in the organization of some on-campus charity events - two bake sales, as well a dinner raising money for cancer research."
Nodding some more, Adrienne pretended to be reading Amara's CV. "Organized, good. Tell me, why do you want to come work for me, Amara?"
Amara took yet another deep breath - she'd practiced this answer, under instructions from a couple of college friends. "I've never been employed before," she started honestly, a slight smile on her face. "I've been so focused on my education and learning about living in America, this one aspect I have neglected. As for working here in particular? It is a position I think I would excel in, in an environment I think would challenge me. I also admire what you do - not just the clothes that you produce, but you give back to the community as well, with the recycling program."
"That's a very good answer," Adrienne replied with a smile. "I don't expect you would be challenged too much by what the job entails, judging by how you seem to excel in your classes and extracurricular activities," she pointed out, gesturing at Amara's resumee. "I believe I can offer you the job on a trial basis for now, since I do want to make sure that working for me doesn't affect your other obligations in a negative way."
"That sounds great," Amara said with a wide smile of her own, relieved that the interview had gone well. Given that this had been her first interview, she had been very nervous, but it seemed to have worked out well after all. "Thank you for the opportunity, I very much appreciate it."
