While bobbing for apples at the mansion's Halloween party, Kyle and Jan discover some unexpected "guests."

(Thanks so much to Frito for Jan's new icon! :) )

The combed-in black dye wasn't coming out of Kyle's hair by virtue of it being pretty much 100% wax despite that he'd pretty much submerged his entire head into the tub of apples more than once. After the first time of showing off that fangs were pretty much an auto-win for apple bobbing, and that the apples were one of the things he both could eat and wanted to eat, he'd been demonstrating a few times an hour for anyone who asked.

He popped back up out of the water with a bright green apple firmly between his teeth and took a bite before letting it drop into his hands. "I wonder if I could like, vote for bobbing for other stuff next year. Oranges or pears or something. I dig on apples but I think I've had like seven." Not that there was any shortage, there were at least another dozen floating around in the water.

"Hmm..." Jan pondered. "It always seems to be bobbing-for-apples, doesn't it? I wonder why. I mean, is there a reason for it, or did something just decide to use apples one day so everyone kept using it? Maybe there were just more apples wherever these people were. Do oranges and pears float as well? I guess apples are considered a classic, and you don't have to peel them, and you do have to peel oranges and not everyone likes pears."

"Apples are in season in the fall? I dunno. And, uh, right, peeling oranges..." Kyle did that. Sometimes. Sometimes he just ate them without peeling because it was faster. "I dunno. I mean, I guess any fruit would? Maybe we could bob for bananas! Dude, or like those weird
spiky fruits. See, that'd be hard for even me!"

"What, the kind suggested for Yvette's trainee name?" Jan asked, taking a bite of another apple. "Rambutan, I think? Yeah, I don't think that would be easy for anyone, and would probably scare some people. People want to be able to bite their fruit without it biting them back."

"Yeah, but dude, extreme bobbing. It could go on ESPN... okay, maybe ESPN five or something." After all, best not to preempt that all-important beach volleyball. Kyle crunched another bite out of his apple, and then began slicing it into pieces with his claws. It was harder to carry that way but easier to eat without having to pick pieces of apple core out of his teeth. "People who eat like, spicy stuff don't get to complain about ... uh... do I have something on my face?" Except that as he took a second look, Jan wasn't staring at him but sort of over his shoulder.

Jan had paused with her apple halfway to her mouth, a look of shock on her face. "Um, Kyle... I'm not quite sure how to tell you this, but there's a skeleton. Like, right behind you."

Kyle would have normally examined that statement for degrees of "Illusions, hallucinations and Artie on a Jolt Cola buzz" but as he opened his mouth to ask Jan if maybe she'd gotten a bad apple or something, the smell of Dead came in from directly behind him, and he snapped his mouth shut and spun in the same motion. And it was, in fact, an actual skeleton, mobile and reaching for him and kind of gross in a dead and boney sort of way.

So Kyle tackled it. It seemed the only appropriate response, even if it meant he ended up on the floor in a scattered pile of bones that were still trying to move around.

"I'd say you got it, but I'm not sure you did," Jan said, still staring and holding the apple up in the air. "Dude, that thing is deader than a zombie! It's just bones! What the hell?"

Jan was right, the skeleton was still trying to move, and Kyle ended up smacking the creeping bony hand a few time with his own palm until it splintered into pieces. And even then he ended up playing whack-a-mole a few times with other bits. "Damn if I know. I ... .. okay, so we've got bats too..." A swarm of them, up by the ceiling. This was getting weirder and weirder."-

"Bats?" Jan's eyes grew wider as she looked up towards the ceiling, taking in the exact shape of the bats and the movements that seemed to confirm that they were indeed alive and not just cut-out decorations or rubber toys."Yeah, unless someone decorated the place with some damn realistic bats, those are real. And I looked at the ballroom yesterday, and there were not bats that looked that real! Is this someone's idea of a joke?"

The dive of a few of the bats towards one of the students clinched it for Kyle. "Yeah, something weird's going on. Which, dude, when is it not, but this is weird even for us..." He waited for the next swoop of the bats and leapt up to swat one out of the air. It struggled in his hand, and he looked at it for a few seconds before letting it go. "Vampire bats. They're real all right..."

Jan frowned, her hand finally dropping to her side, and kicked at a twitching bone near Kyle. "Yeah, this is extra weird, all right. OK, I'm going to walk around and try to make sure people are ok and not too scared. Who knows what else is going on around here?" A shrill scream from another part of the room confirmed that other partygoers were aware of what was going on, whatever "it" was.

"Good idea. Circuit around the room, meet back here, scream like Jamie Lee Curtis if anything grabs you that you can't shock like crazy?" Not that Jan couldn't take care of herself, because she so could and that was one of the reasons Kyle thought she was hot, but still. "We can't be the only ones trying to get some kinda order out of this."

Jan nodded, figuring zaps wouldn't do anything against walking bones, but knowing a good, well-placed kick could solve that problem. "All right, skeletons and bats and whatever else is around here," she warned in a loud voice as she took determined steps forward. "This is one fairy princess you don't want to mess with!"
