Jay wakes in bed from a nightmare and realizes that he wasn't alone.
As Jay shifted in his sleep, his shoulder pinned Catseye's tail and she tried not to yelp as she yanked it free and wrapped it closely around herself. She was curled up on his pillow, just above his shoulder, trying to sleep but getting a little bit annoyed with her current bedmate. He kept thrashing around. She wasn't purring for him tonight, that was for sure. With her grouchy face on, the large cat opened her eyes and kept them zeroed in on Jay's movements so that she could jump away if he rolled over and tried to smush her.
Jay's lips parted as his breathing picked up. His arm brushed down like he was pushing something away, turning his head to the side and mumbling something incoherent. His head tossed to the left again, turning him at an uncomfortable angle and another mumble, something like a hiss fell from Jay's lips. His features crushed together and his bare legs tangled in the sheets.
Then suddenly he was up on the bed, screeching something incoherent as his wings thrusted out. Wing tips slammed into the wall and abruptly halted as though he'd woken and stood there, breathing heavily, eyes open but not sure of his surroundings. For a long moment, he didn't move until he ripped his wings from the wall (pulling some of the wall with him) and stepped back, brushing a hand over his sweat covered face and stumbled down from the bed. His wings shook, jerking in one fluid movement to get the wall pieces off their tips and the tremor of a predator rippled through them, itching to do more than what he did.
It was hard to calm down so his wings would slip back away but he sat down on the chair, forcing himself to stay put instead of taking flight where he would lose himself in the speed of the wind and be able to forget it was happening all over again. Dropping his head in his hands, he lingered there, focusing on his breathing, if nothing else, what he felt were like voices in his head.
It was ten minutes before they would go back in, a new record for him after a nightmare and when he went to climb back in bed, he noticed fur all over his pillow. At first, he was annoyed, but on a second thought, he slippd off the bed, got down on all fours and checked beneath to find Catseye.
"Cats--" he reached under, gesturing for her to come out.
Catseye shifted to girlform but stayed under the bed. "Did Jay have a nightmare?" she asked. She didn't add the 'or have you just gone crazy again and want to hurt me again?' to her question, but thought that staying under the bed until he answered would be a good idea.
"Yeah," he said, although he sat up, back on his legs and waited for a second before he got back down again and gestured for her to come out. "Ah'm awake now though -- sorry," he added the last part weakly.
Catseye shifted and scurried out from under the bed, running her head under Jay's gesturing hand and hopping up on the bed before shifting back into girlform. "Do not be sorry Jay it is alright. Lots of times I nap with people and they roll on me or hit me with their arms." Which wasn't really the same as nearly being impaled by razor sharp metal wings, but she hoped she could make Jay feel better by saying it, at least. "What did you have a nightmare about?"
"Just stuff," Jay said, without committing to any image in particular. He paused to look down at the bed, some of it cut off at the top and grabbed for the pillow and the comforter, tugging on it for her to get up. "C'mon, lets go sleep in the other room." Kyle was going to have a fit at having to replace another bed for him. Maybe they should just stop trying all together?
Catseye studied the damaged bed curiously, then turned to Jay with her most serious face on. "At least you do not sleep in a hammock," she mused, a grin tugging at the corner of her mouth, "or you would go 'crash!' on the floor. Did you have a nightmare about fire trucks? Sometimes I have nightmares about fire trucks."
"No," Jay said, dragging the sheet into the suite's main room and then pausing at the empty door of the ajacent room before going inside. From there, he crawled on teh bed, dropping the pillow onto it and curled up. His eyes followed Catseye as she walked around the side of the bed and he moved back a pace so she could lie down with him.
"Did you have a nightmare about giant mice that have big sharp teeth and they play Chase with you and eat you?" she asked, curling up against Jay's side.
"No," Jay choked and wrapped his arm around her, tucking his head away into her shoulder so he didn't have to look at her.
Tail twitching in thought, Catseye snuggled into Jay's arm and patted his head, toying with his hair. "Did something try to hurt you in your nightmare? Not a giant mouse but something else? Or maybe you dreamed you were hurting someone and that is why you do not want to say?"
There was nothing in Jay's life that would make him talk about what he dreamed about in detail but he just nodded faintly to Catseye's guess and tightened hishold around. "Ah don't want to talk about it," came his quiet reply.
"Okay," Catseye acquiesced, resting her cheek on the top of Jay's head. "But do not be angry or sad at yourself for your nightmare Jay," she soothed, "it was not real. It was just a dream. Not real."
Her words were soothing and the fact that he could hold her was what made him feel he still had some grip on reality. He just wished he could believe her that it was just a dream.
