GBOW: In The Navy
Apr. 24th, 2010 02:57 pmBobby and Sam take on the submarine elements of the fleet in a truly unique fashion.
As Bobby Drake grabbed on tightly to the back of Sam, he couldn't help by fell the rush of the cool air on his face. It was still hard for him to believe that this was what he did now. Growing up in high school he had always looked at the X-Men with such high esteem, and now he was one. Dropping out of planes to help save the world. It was surreal. Leaning forward he yelled against the wind. "You know, even though we have a job to do, can we take a quick time out to look at how Ethan Hunt this is! I just really want Xavier to give us exploding sunglasses next time!" Some things didn't change for Bobby. Be it sneaking into the girls rooms during high school, or trying to find a way to raise a group of subs from a military power, the puns would always be part of his secret mission ritual that helped deal with the nerves.
"We haven't had a movie night in a while..." Sam thought out loud idly as they closed in on their targets. "It's about time for one, isn't it?" He slowed a bit, making sure their approach was perfect. It would be important to avoid incoming fire so he didn't get knocked into anything and cause damage.
"Yeah, we need to take care of that. I mean I guess a terrorist thereat is more important, but as soon as this is over, I'm moving a Jessica Alba movie to the top of my Netflix Que..." Bobby smiled one last time before he began to focus on the mission at hand. He reached towards his back digging for the resuscitator built from the techies at the mansion before beginning to focus on the water in front of him. It was much warmer than he was used to, but he couldn't freeze over a body of water this size. Instead he would need to focus all of his energy on the subs hovering somewhere under the surface.
Being careful not to pierce a ship, Sam buzzed by as close as he could safely manage. He wanted to rock their hulls and distract the crew so Bobby could do what he had to. Keeping his speed up, the Southern man knew he could keep their attention and hopefully prevent them from even noticing their forward ballast tanks were freezing until they absolutely had to surface. It would prevent any sort of coordinated or timely response.
Bobby closed his eyes and tried to focus his attention away from the water around him and instead onto the subs as they became larger and larger. Even after spending years on the Blackbird, it was still hard for the boy to focus on things when they moved this fast, instead of simply marveling at what was going on. But as he squinted his eyes, he started to focus on the first sub. Tightening his grips on the molecules around it's tank. As his grip continued, the tank began to frost over, giving Bobby hope to continue to focus until sheets of ice were beginning to form.

"Captain? I think we have a problem." Captain Nermal Mehta looked up from his reading, as his helmsman approached.
"Do we?" The Captain of the INS Sindhushastra would have used any other word to describe their mission up until now. Other than a few flybuys reported by Admiral Verma from the surface fleet, since leaving Mumbai, they'd seen no opposition whatsoever. The sonor operaters had mentioned some kind of transiet on their scopes, but couldn't identify it, only to be sure it was neither another submarine or any kind of torpedo. He got up from his chair and set his hat on his head. "Show me."
"We're dropping speed, sir, but Engineering says that we're not suffering any power loss. It's like, well--"
"You've been well trained, Leftenant. Give me your best analysis."
"It's like we're somehow getting heavy. I can't explain it, sir."
"Skipper?"
"Yes Sonor?"
"I'm picking up noise. Metal fatigue sounds, very close."
"Other member of the fleet?"
"No sir. I think it... I think it might be us."
Captain Mehta shook his head. "Chief, what's going on?"
"We've got pressure readings on the foreward bulkheads and--" The ship suddenly lerched sideways and a sound like a cannon blast ripped through the tiny space. "Ballast one is open to the sea, Captain!"
"Emergency blow! Get us on the deck, Chief! And someone find out what the hell happened to my ship!"

Bobby couldn't help but grin as he saw the sub heading towards the surface. But with one down, it was time to focus on the next immediately. As he snapped his head around in the water, he began to focus in on the rest of the fleet. Well that and hoping that he didn't make as many ice puns after as Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin. God, he loved being an X-Man
Sam seemed to be much more focused on the task at hand. It took a significant amount of focus for him to weave between the ships and circle so Bobby could perform his task without either of them causing any damage. The History teacher had heard more than enough stories about Submarines and people people dying in them. He certainly didn't want to be a part of that.

"Admiral Verma, sir?"
"Yes Ensign?"
"We have a problem. The Sindhushastra, Sindhuvijay, Sindhukesari, and Sindhurakshak have all surfaced, sir. According to their captains, they've all suffered catastrophic damage to their forward compartments and can't resubmerge." The young ensign struggled not to wince as the Admiral flushed darkly, rage climbing.
"That's the whole blasted submarine group! What attacked them?"
"They report no contacts, sir, and our scopes are clear. Mines were suggested, but sonar detected no explosions. No casualties have been reported."
"That's one positive in this mess. Get the captains on the growler. I want to know what the hell is going on out there!"

As soon as Bobby's face hit the surface, he pulled his resuscitator out of his mouth. While the mansion was at the top of technological superiority, it lack a lot in comfort and stylish fittings. Counting through the submarines bobbing up and down in the distance a smile spread across his face. "I think we got all of them..."
"Now we just need to move along before they figure out what happened." Sam pushed himself to full speed, heading back toward their main collection point. "Or in case something else comes up." After a moment's pause, he added. "That was great work, Bobby."
Drake patted his partner on the arm, a huge smile on his face. "What can I say, I guess I've still got it." No matter how old he got, Bobby Drake knew that he'd always feel like a little kid whenever it came to working for the X-Men.
