Meggan and Kurt
Jun. 12th, 2010 09:09 amBackdated to Saturday, June 12th. So Kurt won’t accidentally stumble on Meggan underwater and panic, she goes to tell him all about the gills.
The morning after Meggan determined just how long she could stay underwater, she was on the way to see her brother. She really didn’t want Kurt to spot her floating around the pool or sitting at the bottomat any point during the summer, and think she was dead or in some serious trouble. Knocking on Kurt’s door, she called out, “It’s just me, Kurt. Can I come in?”
"Always, liebchen." He opened the door with a ready smile, dressed for a hot day. "A social visit, or did you need something?"
She grinned back, giving him a quick hug, as she commented, “More the second one, really.” After just a second, she continued, “It looks like there’s something else I can do with my powers, and I just didn’t want to scare you if you happened to stop by the pool…and didn’t see me come up for air for a very long time.” With a slightly embarrassed look, she added, “I already terrified Julian with that.” And who knew how many others that had happened upon them when Julian was timing her, before he explained the situation.
Kurt stepped back slightly at that, eyeing her. "Little sister, are you telling me you have learned to breathe underwater?"
Meggan nodded, somehow managing not to laugh at that look. “Pretty much, since I found out I can grow gills now. I sat on the bottom of the pool for a few minutes before I realized I probably should have stuck a note on the edge. And that’s about when Julian spotted me and dove in.”
"Oh, the poor boy." He couldn't help laughing himself. "You do have a habit of scaring people with your new discoveries. Now, let us see... you can levitate, you can grow gills to breathe underwater, you can absorb electricity... I think the question might be what you cannot do."
“Kind of hoping that’s it, actually,” she returned with a laugh. “Julian actually agreed to time me once he figured out I wasn’t drowning. According to his watch I can stay under with the gills for a total of one hour, one minute, and…I think it was thirty-six seconds. After that, it’s more exhaustion than suffocation.” With a grin, she admitted, “Maybe a little bit of boredom from staring at the bottom of a pool for that long, but mostly the exhaustion.”
"In which case, with training, your time may get longer", he said thoughtfully. "If you felt the need, of course, as over an hour is already exceptional. The things you could do with such a power, both useful and just for fun..."
“Maybe. Like being able to get somewhere everyone else needs scuba gear for? If it’s not too far down.” Then, with a hint of a mischievous grin, she added, "Or staying hidden for a while, and grabbing someone’s leg when they finally think they’re all alone in the pool.” Just as long as it wasn’t someone that might react badly. She would probably end up having to resist the urge to hum the Jaws theme if she pulled that.
Kurt cracked up at that. "I suspect I should not be encouraging you to do any such thing, but if you choose your victim carefully..."
“That’s true.” She would probably end up with a short list of people to try that on before the day was out. “But it might be spoiled if someone spots me and dives in for another rescue as I’m getting ready,” she mused with a chuckle. An attempt to be stealthy with a surprise, thoroughly ruined. “So I’ll explain on the journals before I even think of trying it.”
"That is true", he said with a nod. "It would be a good thing to do anyway, if you plan on practising your new trick without scaring anyone. Else", he finished with a quick grin.
“There’s that, yeah,” she agreed with a grin. With a shrug, she continued, “I’ll probably end up making a sign to stick near the pool, too.” While it sounded ridiculous, it might just work. Better than a tiny note stuck to the edge of the pool, since that could easily be missed or washed away. “Put it somewhere near a door, like those signs warning against wet floors--but smaller. So everyone knows the one the one they see at the bottom of the pool isn’t stuck in the drain or in trouble, and it’s just me testing things out.”
Kurt smiled. "That sounds like the best possible plan. And if you ever need a spotter, you know you can call on me."
“I know, and thank you for that.” Although, aside from managing to keep people from rescuing her, she was pretty sure that would be the most boring job ever. As another thought sprung to mind, she commented with a slight wince, “And I promise I won’t be testing out the gills on Monday. Parents' Day—not a good day for that, unless I want to be terrifying everyone’s relatives.”
"And for that, I thank you." He chuckled. "While they might not object to the gills, in the circumstances, it would be best not to have any not-really-drowning incidents."
