Having spent as much time as possible helping in Nova Roma, Amanda heads back to the States. She has some ideas for Amara, however, about the situation.
Amanda zipped up her duffel bag and slung it over her shoulder with one last glance at the room she'd been calling 'hers' for the last couple of weeks to make sure she hadn't left anything behind. There was movement at the door and she looked up to see Amara there. "All set," she said with a small smile. "Anything you want me to take back with me?"
Amara shook her head, glancing around the room as well. "No, I think I will be fine." There was a slight pause, before she continued. "Could you please pass on my apologies to everyone? I did not exactly let anyone know I was leaving. And they would not know why I have been gone for so long."
"Of course." Amanda made a slight face as she thought of the time they'd both been gone - she was surprised Remy hadn't sent someone to haul her back. Then again, he trusted her, so probably not. "How're you going to cope with all this? There's a lot needs doing yet."
"Thanks." Amara felt bad, having just disappeared, but her home and family were important to her. "We'll be fine. I've still got plenty of time before classes resume, and I can always take some time off if need be, to help take care of everything."
"Hmm." Amanda paused, obviously considering the situation. "Here's a thought - how about I give Angelo and Elpis a nudge your way? They specialise in the relocating thing and have the resources, as well as experience in people who are recovering from programming of sorts. They could give you a hand, maybe help resettle the folks that want to leave?"
Amara paused, and then nodded. "That would help, yes. Thank you." She attempted a smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Hopefully the people who choose to leave don't receive the welcome I did."
Amanda hesitated, then crossed the room to wrap Amara in a tight hug. Hugging was, for Amanda, something she did for "her" people and only after a space of time. She would touch people, certainly, a hand on the arm, a pat on the shoulder, but hugging was different. "I know it's hard," she murmured. "But you're good people, 'Mara. Don't let anything make you think otherwise."
Amara wasn't entirely comfortable with physical affection either, but the hug from Amanda was very welcome. She hugged her back almost fiercely, pressing her lips together to prevent herself from crying.
"Thank you," she murmured, before pulling away with a slight smile on her face. "We should get you moving. I wouldn't want for you to miss your plane."
Amanda flashed a brief, wry grin. "'Specially when I have to slog through bloody jungle for a few hours to get to it."
