Garrison Kane goes out to cook by the pool, and provokes a meeting of sorts with a cheery, hungry Laura.
Garrison Kane stepped out into the bright summer sun and smiled. It was mid-day, and the students were by and large in class, leaving the spacious pool area free for his personal use. Not that he had swimming in mind as he walked over to one of the two huge barbecue stations at the side of the patio. Most people knew about Garrison's odd issues about taking advantage of the cooking rotation at the mansion, preferring to cook his own meals or more often, get his food elsewhere. The tray he held was stacked with various types of meat, and it was obvious that Kane's plans for lunch included the application of fire.
The students were away, but not certain feral with too much time on her hands. Oh noes, even if Cammie was interestingly poison-free, Laura knew better than staying around her for too long. So she was out and about, carefully keeping her distance from the teaching rooms; chances of an overly enthusiastic teacher pulling her into their class would not be welcomed. So when she was nearing the pool area, her nose picked up the scent of meat being cooked, and she pretty much got on her fours and ran all the way there. She nearly missed Garrison when she pretty much hit the brakes next to him to take a good look on the meat. Her mouth was almost watering already, and she had eaten hours ago. Hours. Then she noticed the man.
"Ah, Mr. Kane." Where did you came from?
"Hey Laura." Garrison said affably, although couldn't fail to notice her eyeing his lunch like a prisoners looking at a supermodel. "How's tricks?"
Laura kept her eyes on Kane; she forced herself to, anyway, as she knew it would be only polite to look at him while they talked. "There, not to really exiting, but at least something happens now and then to keep me entertained." If it wasn't for Cammie and her 'human phase' she would be so bored... "How about you? Haven't got shot in a while?" That was more or less what Laura knew of Garrison's work at the mansion. He was the guy getting shot and saving the world.
"Not, not recently." Kane said with an amused smile. It was always interesting, if a touch terrifying, to see what the various members of the mansion thought that he spent his time doing. "Which is a good thing, by the way." He reached past her for the tongs, and shifted some of the meat on the grill.
In Laura's opinion, getting shot at while saving the world was way better than her life. Sure she could heal from the shots and well, but that was totally not the point. "Of course is good!", agreed as her eyes returned to the food for a moment. "Although sometimes I would like that sort of excitement. You know, something like Pops does." Although she wasn't entirely sure just what Logan did; she was sure it involved clawing people, to death even. Or to death, mostly. But she had already hurt someone with her class -in self defense, but still- and she knew that if that was needed, she would again.
"Are you going to eat all that?" Her attention span hadn't improved as much as her fighting skills though.
Garrison looked down at the loaded grill. He had always been a hearty eating; a frame like his required a lot of energy, even before his powers came into account. However, he did have that 'nice guy' thing working against him, and managed to maintain his smile. "Are you hungry, Laura? There's enough if you want to join me for lunch."
Laura was about to nod when something poked the back of her head. Something...it felt like her conscience. "I shouldn't...couldn't...it's your food..." Tasty, awesome meaty food. "Maybe there is more...somewhere else?" Making Kane cook for her was hardly as bad as eating his food, right?
"Don't worry about it. This lot's almost ready." He said, shrugged, and flipped one of the sausages to cook evenly. "You can repay me by refilling my coffee mug from that thermos over there."
So it was totally Kane's fault for telling her it was okay. Laura took the mug and went over the thermos, refilling it, and planning to refill the mug each time was needed. Least she could do, she assumed. "Do you think I should go to college?" Where did that come from? Laura herself wasn't sure, but the question had been there since she had arrived, so it was bound to appear sooner or later.
"I think most people should go to college if they have the chance. Not to sound like an after-school special, but at the very least, education will never hurt your opportunities." Kane reached for the platter and slipped it on to the barbecue wing beside the grill.
"Hm..." She didn't sound to convinced when she placed the mug back on its place, and stared at the food. "I've been thinking on putting my mutation to a better use." She looked at her hands for a moment, as if doubting of her own words. "First I just wanted to do be like Pops, but I think I wouldn't be true to myself that way." The idea of joining the X-Men had been very tempting, but she hadn't said a thing; Laura was unsure she could deal with the compromise. "That and I don't see me working behind a desk like, ever."
"You're young. There's a lot of 'nevers' that will disappear after a few years." Kane flipped a couple of the burgers and reached for the buns. "Trying to follow your generic father might be a little difficult, unless you're interested in enlisting in secret government programs, operating as an assassin for a couple of decades, and then getting fucked over in an attempt to disappear you. I think that a Liberal Arts degree might be a better direction to start with."
You could tell Laura was paying attention just because she usually didn't quite listen to older people than her talking about studies and her future. And while she knew what Logan knew about his life -or so she hoped-, hearing it again was...unsettling. "He did make it hard to emulate", said with a grunt. "Liberal Arts...that sounds fun. Worth to look over, if anything. I'm sure I won't need to kill anyone there."
"Depends. Some of those Lit lectures get pretty hardcore about their poetry."
That actually made her chuckle. "Do they have duels to death with rhymes and paper edges? First one to draw tears or blood wins?" Now the career sounded more interesting, even if the last bit of information was only on Laura's head.
"I think it's normally solved with a quote off - Gilbert and Sullivan at fifteen paces."
And that one earned him a confused look. "Liberal Arts, right. As long as I don't have to quote dudes or something, I'll be safe." She was totally googling Gilbert and Sullivan later than day. "Is that ready now?", asked, her attention back to what had brought her in the first place.
"Yes, before you try to put a bun around my arm or something and douse it with hot sauce." Kane started flipping meat on to the platter, pairing up hamburgers and sausage and flank steak until the platter almost groaned under the weight. "If anyone asks, this is more than for just us."
"Oh~ I think this is love." Too bad she was looking at the food when she said that, Kane. She had enough attention set on the man to nod at him, a small smirk on her face. "Yeaaaaaaaaaaah right; I could eat this all by myself...but you are sharing with me so!" Which meant she was just going to smile and attack a hamburger.
"Yeah, you're definately Logan's kid."
