Following Amara's bout of the 'flu, she and her suitemate catch up.
Backdated to last Friday.
Getting sick had done terrible things to Amara's schedule - she had classes to catch up on and reading to do, and working piling up on her desk at Elpis. She'd begged off a HeliX meeting and various outings with friends, and had come straight home to start working.
Well, in theory. What she was doing instead was dumping her bag of books on the coffee table of the living room she shared with Yvette, heading straight for the kitchenette. She'd left it in more of a mess than she usually liked, having overslept that morning. She'd left a note apologizing, but she didn't want to leave it a mess for too much longer. She could hear Yvette moving around somewhere, so she paused on her beeline to the kitchen.
"Hi Yvette!" She called out. "I'm home for the night." Surprising her roommate with her presence was not something she liked to do.
There was a pause and then Yvette appeared from her bedroom. "Hi!" she said, smiling a little. "You sound much better than you did before. The 'flu is gone?"
"Yes, thank you." Amara huffed a little. "I'm sorry if I was a pain, I'm not very good at being sick, it seems. It's been so long since I actually have been sick." If she thought about it hard enough, it was probably back before her powers manifested.
"It is fine." Yvette waved away the apology, perching on the chair she'd claimed as hers. "You were not such the pain and you could not help being sick. After all, we do not all have the healing factors, do we?"
"No, which I think is entirely unfair. Why should they get all the fun of shortened recovery time and never getting sick?" Amara grinned as she spoke, clearly not serious about her complaint.
"Ah, but would you really want to live off the cheeseburgers while you were healing? All that protein you need to eat, to make the new muscle." Yvette wrinkled her nose playfully.
"No, probably not," Amara laughed. "Steak I could do. I know quite a few good recipes with chicken and beans. Anything not to get sick again."
"They say the chicken soup is good for being sick, so there is that," Yvette suggested. "I should have thought to bring you some."
"Oh no, it's fine, really." Even if Amara was good at letting other people look after her, she certainly didn't expect her roommate to. "John dropped by with some the other day. Even though I told him he didn't have to."
"John is visiting a lot, is he not?" Yvette said with a hint of a grin. She would have had to have been blind to miss what was going on.
Amara tried to hide a grin of her own, one she often wore when it came to John. She pressed her lips together for a moment, before shrugging and blushing a little. "Maybe a little," she admitted, unable to hide the grin for very long.
"Oh-ho!" Yvette crowed, pleased that she was right. "Do you like him?"
"I do," Amara replied, going pink. "He's... surprising." She'd heard enough about his reputation over the years, and had read about him in the X-Men mission files, she'd been somewhat surprised by what he was like now that she'd gotten to get to know him.
"He is," Yvette agreed. "A lot of the time he can be very grumpy, but it is the, how you say? Front? He needs to hide that he actually does have the heart sometimes. I am not sure why." She grinned. "I am sure you can be helping him to stop that."
"He does do that," Amara smiled. "I don't know why either. But I suspect if I was able to figure him out so easily, getting to know him would not be so interesting." She shrugged. "If he wants to hold everyone at arm's length, that is his choice. His heart is in the right place, I think, which is the important part. He loves working for Elpis, even though I don't think he likes to admit it."
"Perhaps he feels if he keeps everyone away, he cannot be hurt?" Yvette suggested thoughtfully. "Which is why it is good, that he is not holding you away. 'No man is the island', yes?"
"Perhaps," Amara agreed with a smile. "If I ever figure it out, I will let you know." But Amara suspected John was an enigma she would be working out for quite awhile.
