Kurt stops by the medlab to see Wade.

It hadn't taken Kurt long to establish where Wade was, and he both wanted to talk to him and thought he might like a visitor. So, he made his way down towards the medlab, German newspaper sticking out of his pocket.

For some reason, it always surprised Wade when the door to his little room in the medlab opened and it wasn't one of the doctors coming to make sure he was still alive. It was later in the day, a good seven or eight hours from his last treatment, so he was at least able to feel like he wasn't going to throw his insides up every fifteen minutes. The dizziness that sometimes spawned the nausea had abated a bit, enough for him to consider the possibilities of maybe watching a movie or something. He was thinking Up might be good.

And then the blue dude with the prehensile tale was standing in the doorway and Wade blinked a little. "Hey," he said, not entirely sure why he was there. Maybe he was lost. Or maybe Monet had told him where Wade was and that Wade needed more threatening. The mercenary wasn't really in the mood for more threatening. At least Kurt wasn't telepathic.

"Hello, Wade", Kurt said with a smile that was distinctly friendly, and came into the room. "I hope you are not feeling too bad?"

"Been better," Wade said. "Been worse, too." That wasn't strictly true, but he also wasn't one to complain too much, despite the circumstances. At least not with someone he didn't know well. "What brings you to the medlab on what I assume is fine afternoon? Weather dot com says it's nice out, anyway."

"Doing my Christian duty and visiting the sick", Kurt said dryly. "Also there is something I wanted to talk to you about. Only indirectly related to any of my sisters, I promise you."

"No offense," Wade said, smiling a little, "But I never really bought into that religion thing too much. And I swear, I didn't do anything to either of your sisters." He gestured tiredly toward the bed. "Not even indirectly. Not in much of a position to do anything."

"None taken", he said easily, then nodded. "I know. If anything, I think, you have done something for one of them."

"I did teach Meggan how to make a tasty, tasty meatloaf," Wade said, nodding a little. "She's pretty much set for life so far's meatloaf's concerned now."

"And I am sure everyone she cooks it for will thank you for it", Kurt said, the smile returning. "Including my brother and his wife, the next time she returns home. I do like to keep him informed, as he sends me word of the clans and sometimes the local news from there." He produced the newspaper and waved it by way of casual illustration.

"It's really not a complicated recipe," Wade said, eyeing the paper for a moment before tipping his head to the side. "The clans - that's Romany families, right?"

"Right", he agreed. "We tend to be closeknit, and somewhat insular as it goes, and most of the clans are interrelated by marriage and cousins... but every extended family has its black sheep. The two men I mentioned to you, for example, were very deservedly so."

"Which men?" Wade could feign ignorance better than most and in this instance, his illness helped him hide behind a facade of forgetfulness. "Oh - no wait. The guys who hurt Meggan, right." He nodded. "Believe you me, I know all about being a black sheep."

"But whatever your family may think", was the quiet response, "I think you are more or less a good person. Those two were cowards and bullies all their lives. I knew them as boys, and I was small for my age and so very different... My brother fought them on my behalf many times. It is no surprise to find they have come to a bad end, and I cannot say I am sorry."

Wade didn't answer immediately, busy as he was suppressing thoughts about his own family. Then he shrugged and said, "Karma. She's a bitch. It's like the dude in The Mummy said - or was it the chick? Can't remember. Either way, somebody in that movie told Benny he'd get his in the end, cause bad guys always do."

"One way or another", Kurt agreed. "It would seem they were no more popular in prison than they were out."

"So they came to their untimely end in a holding cell? Harsh."

"One in their permanent cell, in fact, and the other out of it while taking part in a prison riot. Again, unsurprising."

"Eh, riots," Wade said, waving a little. He suspected Kurt suspected him. But in the end, there was nothing Wade could do about the suspicion. His alibi, in the end, was airtight.

Kurt smiled faintly. "In general, I am supposed to forgive those who have trespassed against me. But in this case, I must confess if I knew who had killed them, I would be more inclined to thank that person than tell anyone what I might know. Or guess."

"What, no turning the other cheek?" Wade quirked a tired sort of smile. "'course, the only thing I really know about all that, I learned from a Weird Al song."

"I will have to confess my uncharitable thoughts when next I go to church", Kurt said with exaggerated solemnity. "But after all, I am not a saint."

"Nobody is, blueberry. Nobody is." Wade could appreciate this for what it was - Kurt basically saying 'thank you' in a round about way, but there was really no way the mercenary could say 'you're welcome' without incriminating himself. He figured it was enough, in the end, that he'd done what he'd done.

Kurt nodded, evidently satisfied by the way the conversation had gone. "Well, I suppose I will leave you to rest before the doctors throw me out. I hope you feel better soon."

Smiling again, Wade offered Kurt his hand. "Thanks. I'll try, but there's no telling how this whole thing's gonna end up."

Kurt took it readily, shaking it. "You are in the best hands for a good ending, at least."

"That's what they keep telling me," Wade said, nodding slowly. "Don't be a stranger, blueberry."

"I will make sure not to be", he promised.
