Molly and Sarah return Eddie's crystal radio to his final resting place and Sarah gets it to work using her technomojo.
Holding onto the crystal radio, Sarah shakes it just a little bit. It wasn't something she was all that familiar with, really, but if it was what the ghost wanted, it was what they'd bring him. Closing her eyes, she used her powers to see if she could figure out what was wrong with it.
"Have you got it yet? Is it done?" Eddie asked, one hand twitching up to scratch his head yet again. If he'd been alive, his fingers would have come down bloody. "You know you need to use a crystal radio, right? Right?"
Molly peered up at the ghost, tilting her head to the side. "Why's it called a crystal radio? Does it have crystals inside?"
The guy was kinda creepy and also a ghost, which made him super creepy. But he kinda reminded her of the guy from that movie with the scissors for the hands. So maybe he was secretly nice and just pretending to be a jerk. Maybe.
Eddie gave another head scratch and tugged up a sleeve to start working on an arm, too, as he spoke. "Yeah, it's got a crystal in, that acts as a diode. But the important thing is that it's impossible to pick up a crystal radio because they don't need batteries and don't emit radiation, so the man can't find you and pull you in and shake you down for thought crime. And there's no battery so when things all go to hell and back, you'll still have your radio. Can you say that about your iphones?"
"If it was an iPhone it'd be way easier." That kind of thing she knew how to deal with. Sighing, Sarah tried again, then fiddled with part of the radio. "Just gimme a second, I'm not used to this kinda... thing." It was a lot simpler than a cell phone or a laptop, but it wasn't something she'd ever used before, which meant it'd take a little more effort on her part. Wiping some hair out of her eyes, Sarah tweaked one more thing and then laid the radio done in front of here. "Ok, I think that does it." She hoped that did it, at least.
Molly didn't have an iPhone, so that was kinda lost on her, but she did like the idea of having something if things went bad and other people couldn't use theirs. She peered at the radio then grinned. "Cool! Good job, Sarah! Then you'll get to go home, Mr. Eddie!" she said, then paused.
"What's a thought crime, though?"
Eddie gave his head another good scratch. "It's what the man will get you on, when he doesn't have any real evidence and just believes that you're probably thinking about maybe committing a crime. They'll take you in and lock you up for that, if they ever suspect you of committing thought crimes."
Molly's eyes got big. "Whoa. I didn't know that!" she said, looking to Sarah, then back to Eddie.
"So it's like telepaths or something?"
Like her parents?
Sarah fiddled with the radio, turning it on and double checking that it did in fact work. As she did, static could be heard at first, which then turned into music as tuned it in better. "That's it, it's fixed. Right?" She looked at the ghost, as much as she could stand anyway without getting completely freaked out, and hoped that it was what he wanted.
"Like government telepaths that want to lock all mutants up unless they become state sponsored weapons, kiddo," Eddie muttered as he took back the radio, screwing the earpiece in and turning the dial slightly. He gave a ghastly smile and began to fade. "It works!"
Government telepaths? There were government telepaths? Dude. Molly barely had time to process that before the weird scissorhands man started to disappear.
She gave Sarah a quizzical look, then looked back toward the man.
"Um...bye!"
Sarah just shrugged at Molly, not having any more of an idea of what the ghost was talking about than she did, really. He was beginning to fade though, so that meant they'd done their job, or so she hoped. "See you later... or not, hopefully. Nothing personal!" She waved at him as he disappeared, hoping he could rest in peace now.
