Sam and Kurt get a chance to catch up a little in their suite about everything that's been going on in their respective lives, good and bad, before Sam volunteers to make them a snack.

Sam had been keeping himself busy since his return, trying to enjoy what had been left of the summer weather while he still could. He'd also been preparing for classes and such, and as a result he was seldom around his room and therefore his roommate, Kurt. Today, however, he'd decided to stay inside and take it easy for a change. He had no greater plans than picking out a good book to read or making something tasty for supper, and as an added benefit he hoped to have some time to catch up with his roomie.

Speaking of which, Sam wandered out into the living area of their suite to see if Kurt was around and free to hang out for awhile. He'd missed living with his friend, even though he'd had an important reason to go to Muir Island. Nothing was more important than family, but Sam held his friends in high regard too, especially Kurt.

Kurt was on the couch, feet drawn up under him and a book open in his hands. He glanced up as the bedroom door opened, smiling. "Good afternoon, Sam."

"Heya Kurt, how goes it?" Sam strolled over to one of the living room chairs, plopping himself down. He looked over and saw that the other man was reading something himself. "Hope I'm not disturbin' you or anything, am I?"

"Oh, nothing that cannot be interrupted", he said easily, setting the book aside. "It goes well, and you?"

Settling into the chair now that he knew he wasn't intruding, Sam grinned at Kurt. "Not bad, I suppose. Think I'm settled back in now, which is always a nice feeling." Moving a pillow to one side, same rested one of his arms on the arm of the chair. "Sorry I haven't been around so much lately, I haven't been the best roommate."

"These things happen, especially living as we do." He grinned back. "I am glad if things are settling down for a little while now."

"Me too, it'd be nice if things stayed calm for awhile, wouldn't it?" Sam chuckled after having said that aloud, shaking his head a little. "Though I reckon I've gone and jinxed us now, haven't I?"

"Most probably. But at least you were not foolish enough to go into detail. Your family is well, then?"

Sam nodded. "Well enough, anyway. Jay's been progressing, at least to the point where I was ok with leaving him." He winced a little at that, it sounded worse when he said it out loud. "I'll be going back to check up on him, and staying in touch now as much as I can, though."

"I understand", Kurt said sympathetically. "I am an older brother myself, as you know, and if something of that kind happened to one of my girls... I might never have come back."

"It wasn't easy to come back but I had to. Only once Jay was ok, of course," Sam nodded. "But, well, I wanted to be useful again. I suppose that's the best way to put it." He'd made so many wrong moves in the past that he just couldn't let them go without trying to make things right again.

"There is a draw to it", Kurt said with a nod. "Once you have tasted the chances Xavier has to offer, it is very hard to give it up. Perhaps one day Jay will be well enough to rejoin you here."

"It really is, it's true." He hadn't been able to give it up for one. "I hope so too, that's the goal anyway." Sam looked down at the pillow, picking at one of its corners a little. "How about you, you've been keepin' busy too?"

"For the most part, yes." He smiled slightly. "Nick came home. And if he is not quite himself... at least he is alive."

"It's good that he came back." Sam returned Kurt's smile. "Has there been any progress with getting him back to being himself?"

"Hard to tell. There has been nothing concrete but, I think, one or two small signs of hope. It may just be a matter of waiting for the trauma to heal."

"Sometimes that's all there is for it, to just wait it out and let things heal on its own accord." He'd felt the same way about Jay's progress. Sam had never intended to be gone as long as he had been but that's what it took and that was that. "I hope he'll get better soon, and he'll definitely be in my prayers."

"Thank you, Sam", he said sincerely. "As Jay will be in mine. And in better news... I see Vanessa has been found and brought home safely, hm?"

"She has been, thank God, I was pretty worried for awhile, even though I know I'm the last person she probably wanted to see." No matter what she thought of him, he still cared about her a great deal and certainly didn't wish her any harm. "Hopefully she'll recover soon and will be up and about again, with any luck."

Kurt nodded. "I understand she has taken on a mimic with a healing factor to rival Logan's. And if that does not work, for some reason, Amanda has also offered her services. She will be fine."

Sam nodded, it was true, they knew what they were doing and Vanessa was in the best of hands. "She will be, yeah. Thanks." He smiled at Kurt, glad for the support just the same.

"You are very welcome, my friend." After a moment, he added, "Monet and I are still together, by the way. We will have to get used to this suite no longer being half-empty."

"Oh, that's great to hear, buddy, I'm happy for you. For you both." He grinned, glad to hear someone was having some luck in the relationship department. "Hey, anytime y'all need the place to yourselves, just let me know, it's no problem. She's doing well, too, I hope?"

"I will try to throw you out as little as possible", Kurt promised. "I do have my own room, after all. She is fine, yes, as well as she has ever been."

Sam chuckled at that. "Alright, sounds good to me. And that's good to hear too, I'm glad to hear it, Kurt." He was happy that things seemed to be going well for his friend. "We should all get together some time, maybe grab supper or something. If you don't mind me being a third wheel, that is."

"As long as it is not New Year's Eve, I am sure that can be arranged", Kurt said cheerfully. "New Year's Eve is ours."

"That's not a problem." Sam smiled and nodded, he wouldn't want to intrude on them on that night of all nights. "Check with Monet some time and we'll figure something out, that'd be great."

"Then I will let you know. And try to dissuade Monet from finding a date for you as well."

"That would be greatly appreciated." Even if she tried to do so with the best of intentions, a relationship was the last thing he needed right now, and he definitely wasn't looking for one.

"Think nothing of it", was the amused response.

"Meanwhile, speaking of food, have you eaten yet today? Gonna make myself a sandwich I think, do you want one?" Sam got out of his seat, looking to his roomie to see if he was hungry.

"Not since breakfast." He unfolded and set his feet to the floor. "I could certainly eat a sandwich, thank you."

"Awesome, one sandwich coming up, then." Sam grinned and headed off to the kitchenette area to make them both a little snack. It was good to be back.
