The team back home turns up some important clues.

“Talk to me, guys.” Kane said, pacing outside of his hotel room with his phone in his ear. Mace’s apparent death and the information about this Burnside and his new ‘Sons of Liberty’ had him on edge. Between Brand wanting to call in SHIELD now and his own suspicions about the former Super Soldiers, he needed some kind of lead to follow. Otherwise, the only option would be a statewide manhunt, and with a terrorist group, that was a good way to get innocent people killed. Field agents had been over to Burnside’s home, and the tiny frame house was full of papers, magazines and books on radical American Nationalist writing. FBI profilers were working on his case, and their initial thoughts were not pleasant; in their opinion, Burnside was capable of committing acts of terrorism on a wide scale without any hesitation. Now it was up to them to find him.

Hank scanned the results once more before putting down his touchpad and taking off his glasses with a sigh, "The sample returned with a positive match for your friend Mace I'm afraid. Though, comparing it to some tests he had done a short time ago...." Hank sent the data to Kane, encrypted on the usual level, "I've just sent a data package to you, Kane, the gene sequences should interest you. It appears that the owner of this sample has had some cosmetic surgery done to his genetic structure- most curious, I'm sure you'd agree."

"Genetic what?" Kane furrowed his brow. "You mean that he's been somehow, what, genetically altered somehow? Like an experiment or something?"

"That would be outlandish and within the realm of science-fiction written by Daniel Brown, well, unless it were someone of my intellect working on this and sadly I am not the top of my field in genetics. To make a potentially long answer short, yes- the genetic code in the sample has been tampered with to alter and possibly enhance certain attributes." Hank gave an invisible shrug, "Professional opinion anyway- this shouldn't be possible."

"This is getting better and better. Guthrie, tell me there's at least some good news?"

"Have I ever let you down?"

Perched on the top of Hank's desk, one hand gripped the edge, next to knees that bounced slightly as Paige swung her ankles with wound energy. "So, I took a look at Hank's findings, specifically the altered bits, and managed to identify something unique but still recognizable."
A "ding" was heard over the speaker phone and Paige smiled. "What you're looking at now is a comparison between the compound in Mace and on the right a drug sold under Annodyne in the late 90s. Recalled, naturally. Nearly identical at the start, both are bonds of fluoxymesterone and somatotropin, but as you can see, the one in Mace is clearly a much more advanced version."

"I was able to do a bit of digging after Paige forwarded the info to me, and shockingly..." After popping himself suddenly into the conversation, Drake paused for a second to let the tension build. It was a bad habit he never could shake. "A little company called Kirmon Health in Shaver Lake, California received shipments of the same materials to their labs in the past three months." He let another pause go. "It could always be coincidence though..."

"But we know that it's not. Shit. So, what, these guys are somehow altered and have some kind of super drug in their system? How bad could it get?"

"Weeell..." Paige drawled, looking from Hank to Bobby for some kind of clue as to how bluntly honest to be. "Considering the original drug was pulled for quite strange under the rug read between the lines makes people crazy pants reasons..."

Hank picked up her thought, "To put it in the vernacular, the bottom line of the situation is that if they have altered the formula to the point it had this effect on your compatriot, there is no telling what they have been able to do with it on other subjects. And let's be honest, have you ever known mad scientists to stop at a single test subject...beyond Doctor Frankenstein I mean."
