The Professor has a quiet meeting with two senior members of the US government regarding their Genoshan problem.
"Professor. Thank you for meeting us on such short notice." Val Cooper said, stepping back from the door to accommodate his chair. The meeting was taking place in a nondescript building owned by the Department of Agriculture in New York. If the setting was as unimportant as imaginable, it was the company that made it extraordinary. Val Cooper, one of the most important special agents in the Secret Service and Nick Fury, the director of SHIELD, looked comfortable in his crappy wooden chair as opposed to his palatial office in Triskalion.
"I am always happy to assist the Secret Service and SHIELD," Charles replied mildly, steering his chair into position. "I must admit, I am curious. Normally our meetings are not quite so… cloak and dagger?"
"There are… complications with this one, Professor." Fury said in his baritone, giving the Professor a nod. "The reason we asked you here, well, outside of a dozen of other reasons, is that you have a unique perspective on our current issue."
"That was very clear, General." Val said, with a wry twist to her mouth. "How much do you know about Genosha, Professor Xavier?"
"I have had little to do with the island," Charles admitted. "I did meet a woman from there, the mother of a mutant child who was receiving treatment at Muir Island. She told me a little about her native land."
"I think you need to read up more." Val put a file in front of him. "We have two Genoshan citizens who have turned up on the front steps of the UN and asked for asylum based on mutant persecution in the state."
"This puts us in an obviously awkward position." Fury leaned forward, gesturing with his hands. "Genosha is a valued trade partner with the US, and now we're being told it has a slave caste made up of mutants."
"Slave caste?" Charles looked honestly shocked and surprised, something that few people got to see. "Genosha has a mutant-based industry, yes, but I was told it was voluntary, that Genosha's mutant population had in fact been instrumental in setting it up."
"This is where it gets complicated. The two people seeking asylum are a sixteen year old mutant and the seventeen year old son of the Genoshan Prime Minister. The State Department is eating its own children right now." Fury laughed briefly. "This is a giant clusterfuck, Professor. And even though they can't officially have anything to do with you, the White House is hoping you have a solution."
Charles raised one eyebrow. "You want me to take these children in?"
"We want you to try and make sense of this situation." Val said. "We're stuck between two different influences, and no one really knows what the real situation is. If we grant these kids asylum, we're all but admitting that Genosha is guilty of everything they've said. Which would put a lot of businesses against the wall this way. We need a third party way out."
Charles nodded. "And given one of your asylum seekers is a young mutant, possibly in need of training, it would make sense for me to offer them - and their friend - shelter at my school."
"We actually thought Muir." Val smiled. "If we could say that we sent them for 'testing', we can delay at least a week to assess the situation. More if we can send them into a global facility to get the issue off our hands."
Charles nodded. "It makes sense. And in the meantime… are there plans to investigate these claims of mutant slavery?" He smiled a little self-deprecatingly. "If I can ask such a question, of course."
"Cart before the horse, Professor." Fury looked dark, conflicted. "But if Genosha is enslaving mutants, the next step is weaponization. And that we won't allow."
"Boys, let's play nice. It's two high school students, Charles." Val broke in. "Let's do something for them first, and then we'll figure out the rest."
"Of course Ms. Cooper." Charles' expression didn't change, although there was a flicker in his eyes. "I can contact Dr. MacTaggart on your behalf, of course, to arrange the placements."
"Thank you." Val sighed and sat down, taking a sip from her cup. "Remember when it was just your mutants we were afraid about? Good times."
"We're still afraid of them." Fury grinned, a white flash against his dark skin. "But not of you, Professor. Tell no one, but I wouldn't trust them with anyone else."
