Sunrise Redux
Mar. 7th, 2004 08:55 amBackdated to just after Alex gets out of the medlab. Scott arranges a very early morning surprise of another sunrise sans glasses. Fluff and cuteness abound, nothing vital within.
Scott knocked on Alex's door bright and early...well, not bright, truth be told. The sun had not yet risen in the sky. He idly wondered if Shiro was up yet, and if he'd be skewered by a katana if not.
"Alex, rise and shine!" he called out, looking down at the warm blanket in one hand, the thermos of hot cocoa in the other. Miles was waiting for them just outside the mansion. The elder Summers wanted this to be as much of a surprise as he could make it.
"Come on, sleepyhead! You're up this early when you want to go surfing!"
Alex yawned as he made his way over to the door. Shiro had woken up at Scott's call and shaken Alex awake, for the Japanese boy was a much lighter sleeper then blond. Stumbling to the door as Shiro went back to bed, he opened it just as a yawn escaped him. He blinked at the bright light from the hallway and looked up at his brother.
"One, good waves don't come until the afternoon and two, you better have a good reason for waking me up at this god awful hour," he disgruntally replied to Scott's chipper mood.
"Good waves...I thought all waves were good?" He chuckled, and gestured back into the room. "Get some warmer clothes on, or at least a coat. We've got an appointment with the sun. And I won't take no for an answer."
He crossed his arms, fleece blanket in one fist, and smiled that superior-older-brother-smile at his younger brother.
Raising an eyebrow as Alex wondered how anyone could be this chipper this early in the morning, he nodded to Scott and went back into his room to grab some clothes. As he pulled on a pair of sweat pants and some sneakers, he couldn't help but wonder what Scott seemed so excited about. Only grabbing a sweatshirt for warmth, the warming side effect of his mutation having not left since he discovered it while with Her, he returned to Scott in the hallway, closing the door softly.
"Alright, so what has you so bright and shiny this morning?" Alex asked, though the last word was interrupted by a yawn.
"I wanted to share something with you." Scott walked down the halls, toward the back door where part of the surprise was waiting. "I was recently given the second best gift of my life, and it's not something I can hoard. It was designed to be shared." Scott thought about leaving unspoken the first best, but realized that Alex, in his current mental state, might not realize what it was. And he might not even ask. Putting an arm around his brother's shoulders, he leaned in conspiratorially and whispered in his ear. "Seeing you on that beach in Hawaii was the first best present. Just in case you were wondering."
He let go of Alex to open the doors, and winked at Miles, who was patiently waiting, bundled up against the chill morning air.
"Ready?" He tossed the blanket at Alex as he scooped up the green boy, then slid him around to his back for a piggy-back ride.
A cheerful whoop of delight greeted the gesture, Miles wrapping his arms around Scott's neck while being careful not to cut off his air supply. Wide blue eyes turned on Alex as Miles waited for him to reply expectantly, smiling a bit shyly at the new person but resisting the urge to hide his face against Scott's shoulder. Because he didn't need to hide anymore - or at least, not from the people who lived at the mansion.
Alex blinked and paused a moment at Scott's words, catching the blanket thrown to him out of reflex. But the sight of Scott giving Miles a piggy back ride caused him to shake his head and smile, Bringing back memories of a younger Scott giving a younger Alex piggy back rides through the halls of their families home. Though quite curious as to what was going on why Miles as here, Alex only nodded. "Ready as I'll ever be."
"Excellent," Scott began jogging. "Miles, this is Alex. He's my brother. Alex, this is Miles, the Superhero. Hey buddy, where's the cape? Under your jacket?" He headed toward that same spot Ali and Miles had picked our for the other occasion.
"Alex, you know what Miles' powers do, right?" he said as he stopped, having arrived at the spot. He flipped Miles over his head - carefully - and set him down on his feet. "Blanket...here, do you think?" Scott turned to the youngest member of the trio, head cocked to the side. The sky was growing ominously lighter, they didn't have much time left.
"Yes!" Miles carefully reached for a corner, helping Scott to set it down, and patting it fussily to the ground before crawling to sit on it, letting his boots peek over the edge - always careful, Alex noted, to stay close to Scott while he did so.
Once the blanket was down, Scott sat on it, drawing Miles in close. "Sit close, Alex. Gotta keep the Superhero warm. Once they were all settled, Scott whispered in Miles' ear. "...Ready?"
Alex, who had really just been watching Scott and Miles with a slightly sad smile on his complied, settling in on Miles' other side. The sad smile was because Miles seemed to bring out a side in Scott Alex hadn't seen since he was little, the younger happy Scott before everything had thrown their lives into chaos, a Scott Alex had been afraid had been lost forever. He shook his head gently, removing the depressing thoughts to not ruin what ever surprise Scott had in store for him.
And slowly, on the side opposite where Alex was sitting, Scott slowly reached for his glasses. "Look at the sunrise, Alex. Just enjoy the view. You belong in sunshine, you know that. Not in the cold light of the moon."
So saying, he turned to look on his brother, eyes uncovered.
Miles looked up at Scott and then at Alex, smiling widely, blue eyes fairly brimming with anticipation as he waited for Alex's reaction to the sight of his brother's eyes, as normal as his just at that moment. He wriggled a bit but stayed in place, careful not to distract either brothers at that important moment.
At Scott's command, he looked out to the sun, chin resting on his knees. He agreed with Scott, he belonged in sunshine, belonged outside. And more then that, the sunrise reminded him of the place he still considered a home and early mornings getting up to watch the sunrise over the ocean. But then again, as much as he would have loved to be back in Hawaii...he wouldn't change anything about this moment. Grinning to himself, he turned to look at Scott...and blinked in surprise.
Looking back at him was the face he remembered, older, but still remembered, that the glasses had always hidden. Tears immediately sprang to his eyes as he smiled. "Wow...Scott..." He flushed a bit as a thought came to him. "You look just like I'd always imagined...as silly as that sounds...no, you look better...I...wow". He laughed softly, realising he was rambling with nothing to say.
Noticing Miles, Alex gave the boy a quick hug. "Thank you Miles. Scott was right, you are a superhero."
