Rachel/Kurt: Christmas eve

Rachel finally checks in with Kurt with her well-wishes


Kurt had been getting calls from friends and family all day, answering each one with pleasure to hear from them. Those, however, had been expected.

This one, not so much.

“Well, at least you didn’t drop your phone,” Rachel commented lightly, twirling a lock of auburn around her index finger.

"I am an acrobat with a prehensile tail", he retorted. "I do not drop things. How are you, Rachel?"

“Well and alive,” she chirped, sounding curiously happy. “How are you, Kurt?”

"Well, alive, and one year older", he said cheerfully. "36, now. My little sister called me from Germany just to tease me."

“My, practically prehistoric,” came the taunting reply. “Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, mein Freund. Try not to break any bones, prehensile or otherwise. You know they may get more fragile as you age.”

"Indeed", he agreed. "It has been some years since the last time, I will be doing my very best to avoid it in future."

“Good,” she hummed, lifting a spoon to her lips and slurping up a mouthful of Christmas treat.

"And how goes your search?" he asked, honestly wanting to know. "Taking a break for this one day or two?"

"More like an hour or two," she said, grinning to herself around her spoon. "The search is moving slowly. But at least it's moving for now."

"Progress is always good", he agreed. "Even if it is slow progress, at least you still have an idea of where to look."

"And I get to see the world," Rachel nodded. "Even if it is a rather unconventional kind of sight seeing." The security systems in several government agencies were really out of whack, if she did say so herself.

Kurt snorted. "But then, when did any of us do things the conventional way? It is more fun like this."

"Preeeecisely," the redhead grinned. "So what have you got planned for good old Christmas?"

"I was going to go back to Germany", he said with a wry touch to his voice, "but it seems this year Germany has decided to come to me. Or the clan has, at least. All of them."

Rachel giggled, earning herself a few passing glances from her fellow patrons at the diner she was at. "That's... a big part of Germany. Practically half of Bavaria."

"Yes, yes it is." He laughed. "It must have taken quite some organising to get everyone onto flights, and I am quite impressed that not one of them told me ahead of time."

"Clearly they think you're worth it." She grinned into her cup of eggnog. "And clearly your birthday and Christmas won't be boring."

"Very, very far from it", Kurt agreed cheerfully. "Although I fear poor Jubilee may spend it hiding from any hint of being made to meet the family. A little too soon.”

The redhead snickered lightly. She vaguely remembered overhearing something about Kurt and the spunky Asian girl, and it was nice to have some confirmation. “Do you want her to, though?”

It would totally be entertaining, too.

"In time", he allowed. "When she is ready, and perhaps not all of them. No need to put her through the gauntlet of everyone... but my brother and sister, I would definitely want her to meet."

“You sound really happy.”

"I am", Kurt answered without needing to pause for thought. "Well, for the most part, and certainly in everything under my control. I hope that you have some happiness too?"

“I’m happy you’re happy.” She paused. “Well, I should probably go. Work to do, people to stalk and all….”

"My poor Rachel", he said with sad compassion. "I hope you can find some of your own in the future, then. If you must go, then... happy Christmas."

"I've had my happiness," she said lightly, pushing the almost empty cup of eggnog away and gathering her things as her target called for the bill. Spilling her Christmas treat on him would be a waste of all things yummy, but nothing got you attention quite the way a ruined suit would. "Now I only hope yours sticks around for a long time. Merry Christmas, my friend."
