Insomniac Tandy finds Insomniac Topaz. Discussion happens, and tentative steps towards an actual friendship are made.

It was late. Stupidly late. And Topaz wasn't sleeping. Wasn't even trying, really. After a couple hours of tossing and turning she'd been forced to concede to the fact that she was sleeping that night. So, not wanting to disturb Molly, she'd slipped out of the room, made herself a cup of tea, and wandered out into the hall. Eventually she ended up in the rec room, lying on the couch, her eyes on the ceiling, with the light off and the telly on. She wasn't even paying attention to whatever was playing - it was just on for noise.

The nights were the hardest for Tandy, her sleep schedule was all over the place. Though she was getting help from her little abuse of stuffing her emotions elsewhere she was still on edge and sleep just wouldn't find her. She already had raided the kitchen and eaten most of the poptarts that were in the pantry and half of the milk before walking aimlessly around the mansion until she came to the rec room.

Peering inside she saw that the t.v. was on but didn't see anyone, "Hellooooo?" She whispered, slightly afraid to go inside.

Topaz didn't bother looking, recognizing Tandy's fear and anxiety as easily as she could identify her own emotions (if she ever bothered to acknowledge their existence). "Pretty sure if you come within a hundred feet of me the world will collapse in on itself," she said without taking her eyes away from the ceiling. "The ice caps will melt, volcanoes will explode, the center of the Earth will implode. Probably wouldn't be a pretty picture."

Tandy relaxed at Topaz's voice, "I am pretty sure the start of 100 feet was like down the hallway somewhere." The blonde entered and peaked over the ledge. "And if the world ended then I better apology to you before it does."

Now Topaz did raise her head, quirking an eyebrow in Tandy's direction. "Apologize? For what? I'm the spawn of Satan over here, don't you know."

"Yea well I am no angel either." She walked around the couch and took a seat in one of the armed chairs nearby. "I want to apologize for even putting you in that position of becoming the spawn of Satan. And my sanity almost exploded all over the place because of it."

"You don't have to apologize." Topaz tilted her head so she could look at Tandy as she spoke. "I made my choice," she said simply. "Did this to myself." She paused for a moment. "Sorry about your sanity. Wow, there's no way not to make that sound sarcastic."

Tandy smiled a bit, "No I know what you mean. But I guess we both made choices that have shook the world. Maybe the end of the world already happened..." The blonde looked over at the T.V. "But I just want you to know, I was telling the truth about wanting to be your friend."

"Well that would explain why I feel like I'm in hell," Topaz muttered. She pushed herself into more of a sitting position, leaning against the arm of the couch as she examined Tandy intently. There was nothing but sincerity in her mind. "Why?" It sounded stupid - and slightly rude, she was aware - but it was all she could think to say. It wasn't often anyone actually wanted to be her friend.

Tandy had to agree with that statement, she felt the same way. "Why not?" The blonde asked back, not taking offense from Topaz's tone of voice.

"...Have you met me?"

"Yes. Your name is Topaz, but I have a sneaking suspicious that isn't your real name, then again my mother named me Tandy. You arrived here a few months ago and have a wicked British accent. You tend to be by yourself for the most part and you come off as rude but really that is just how you are. Unless you are trying to be rude....my brain hurts now."

"I hear that happens when you think too much." A faint smirk pulled for a moment at Topaz's lips. "And those are a few of my more redeeming qualities. Doesn't make me much of a friend, though." She said the words in a matter-of-fact way - having long ago accepted that she wasn't the kind of person people wanted to be friends with.

"That and the combination of not sleeping, it would do wonders to your brain. Seriously." Tandy looked over at Topaz and pulled up her legs wrapping her arms around then. "Better friend than how I treated my other friend and my boyfriend last week...but I guess it depends on how define friend."

"Well I'm sure now that you don't have the Wicked Witch of Xavier's buggering up your emotions that'll change." Either she was really tired or just really beyond caring. Still...Topaz tilted her head a bit, still staring at Tandy. Not completely understanding why the blonde would want to be her friend.

"No, but I am on some medication now to help easy everything out. Feeling stuff sucks sometimes. I guess I feel comfortable around you, like you won't judge me. Not that the others judge me, but I don't know I am just spitting things out that could get me into trouble."

"Like I said before, I get that," Topaz said quietly. She'd spent a long time meticulously pushing all of her emotions into a place where they couldn't bother her. It was a useful technique to have. "Can't avoid things forever though, right?" She paused for a long moment before finally saying, "But no, I won't judge. If you ever need a place to hide. You know, if we're actually allowed to be alone together.

"Which is why I like you. You understand me and maybe I understand you a bit. But yea, no I mean yes can't avoid things forever. Not when you live under the same roof as everyone else." Tandy looked down at her hands, "Well we are alone together right now right?"

"Yeah, suppose we are." Topaz cast her eyes around for a clock. "Let's not make a habit of doing this at one-thirty in the morning though, yeah? Teachers might not appreciate it when we both fall asleep in class." But there was a smile - a real, honest-to-god smile - threatening to pull at her lips for the first time in...a very long time.

"Yea they probably won't. I already cause enough grief with them, don't need to add more." Tan smiled back at Topaz, "Then again, we can always say it is flash mob sleep time. I wonder if they would buy that."

"Oh I'm sure they would," Topaz deadpanned. "They'd probably have a good laugh about it while we were sittin' in detention."

"Or we can turn the tides on them and we can have a good laugh as we planned it all along. Might think we are slightly crazy...just slightly."

"Crazy, us? Never."

Tandy giggled at that through her tiredness, "You have a point. We are completely normal teenagers."

"Completely normal teenagers sitting awake in the dead of night watching..." Topaz looked at the telly for a moment. "...I have no idea what this is."

Looking over at the T.V, Tandy smirked when she realized what Topaz was watching. "I think you are watching one of those late night preacher shows."

"...Huh." Topaz watched the man on the screen preach about accepting God into one's heart and all that. "Sorry mate," she said as she grabbed the remote, changing the channel. "I sold my soul to the devil when I was eight."

"Eight huh? Sacrificing any cats recently?"

"Well now that you mention it, I did find a stray last week..." Topaz's voice drifted off as she smirked. "No, no cat sacrifice. Not really my thing."

"Oh did you?" Tandy smirked at her which turned into a slight chuckle. "I see, not your thing...how about dogs?" The blonde was teasing and leaned back into her chair and looked up, yawning. "I should try and get some sleep."

"Sleep's overrated." Topaz took a minute to look at Tandy in the pale wash of light currently bathing the room. "But yeah, maybe you should."

Tandy nodded and stood up from her chair and stretched. "You should sleep too Topaz. Unless you are going for the whole, vampire thing."

"Well that could be fun." Topaz shrugged as she slid back down to her original position. "I'm not tired anyways." A lie, but Tandy didn't need to know that.

"The whole vampire thing? I guess, but it would suck if there were garlic fries." The blonde smirked and moved towards the door, zombie style. "Night Topaz."

"Sleep well, Tandy." Topaz returned her eyes to the ceiling as the other girl made her way out of the room.
