Bishop and Scott play chess while watching some students train. They discuss the future.

"I guess the new phone for your birthday means things are going well between you and Jean." Bishop offered as he made his opening move, eyes wondering over the small table in the recreation room as bright afternoon light from the nearby window cast short shadows across the board. He tended to reserve personal conversation for chess. It was the original intent of the game, he felt; distracting your opponent but also bonding with them.

"They're going better," Scott replied as he considered the board in front of him, "I guess things take time to get back to normal," he paused as he looked out of the window to see the New Mutants involved in their power training. "Well that is if anything around here is normal, we've reached a point where we're talking and can hang out without getting into an argument again."

"If you can get past arguing, that's most of the battle." The large man offered reassuringly before glancing out to the students as well. "I don't see how you live here with all those kids."

"It's not so bad," Scott replied gesturing out of the window, "They're normally pretty well behaved and besides I'm the science teacher and the scary Danger Room guy. It's not like they really act out around me." He grinned, "except Layla, she really doesn't seem to care about my reputation or anything. Almost makes me think I'm doing something wrong."

Bishop laughed softly, "I've met your alumni and had some of your students work for me. It is that bad. Maybe you're desensitized." He offered.

"They really are a good," Scott began before a particularly loud shout came from the group of students outside cutting him of and making him wince. "Ok, they can be a little bit of a handful," he admitted to his friend with a wry smile.

"As long as you can handle it." Bishop looked back to Scott, then the chess board.

"There are times I really do wonder about that," Scott replied, "but I enjoy being a teacher. Even with everything else we do, it's nice to think that we can have an impact on these kids and their lives. Who knows when one of them becomes a senator or president I can always brag that I knew him when he was a wee tyke."

Bishop smiled a little, glancing back out the window. "I'm not sure I see a future president in your bunch but it's nice to know you believe in them that much. Maybe the new Vale that can see the future, if she can get that under control and use it."

"Not to mention how useful it would be to have a fully trained and capable pre-cog working in your PI firm right?" Scott teased. "I don't think we've really seen what direction these kids are going to go in, but judging by past experiences we do know that they're going to surprise."

"Precognition isn't as great for a PI firm as you might think." Bishop admitted. "We show up after everything's already gone down. Psychometry is much better for us. So is her sister's computer whispering."

Scott nodded slowly, "I can see that, you've got to be focused on the past in your line of work. How is business doing for you guys anyway?" Between the school and the X-men Scott didn't get as much time to go into the city and catch up with his friends as he'd like.

Bishop shrugged, "Slower than it has been before. Vanessa and I have a pretty good routine established."

"I guess you have busy periods and quieter periods just like everyone else. Still if you've managed to settle down into a routine then that's only a good thing." Scott replied.

"Probably." Bishop said with a laugh. "Any future leaders of the X-Men in your bunch?" He looked back to the training session.

"I don't know," Scott mused, "We've got some strong personalities in the group, but no-one who is standing out above the rest." He shrugged, "none of them are really acting as a unifying figure or showcasing their tactical acumen yet. I have my eyes of a few of them but it's still early days I guess. We'll have to see how many of them decide to join the team before I really starting thinking of their potentials."

"...don't you mean your eye?" Bishop delivered with an absolutely straight face, other than a raise of his right eyebrow.

"I...well yeah," Scott replied with a laugh, "you got me there. I have my eye on a few of them" the one-eyed man amended.
