Matt moves into the grad suites a little early and gets to know his new suite-mate better
Matt didn't have that much stuff to move from the boys suite downstairs into the grad suite on the floor above, but he had collected a nice collection of books and a lot more clothes than he had realized. Awkwardly fumbling with the door, he came in arms loaded with clothes and promptly dumped them on the couch in the main room. He could get them moved and put away later. Maybe he should consider a suitcase or something other than his duffel bag? It wasn't a large one and it wasn't much help for moving.
Meggan poked her head in, noticing where he’d dropped his clothes on the couch. A couple of books from one of her college courses had last been seen in that general vicinity, when she had been studying. A quick peek to see if she was right, and she’d salvaged them from beneath a shirt a moment later—she would find a better spot for it, where it wouldn’t have a high burial probability. Her books for a few college courses were just about the only things that had been lingering in the area of the couch lately, but at least they weren’t within tripping distance. She’d taken care of it. “Hi! Anything else need moving around?”
She had been too late to open the door for him when his arms were filled with things, but she still wanted to help. If anything was needed.
Matt didn't really know Meggan very well, but she seemed nice. She was dating Korvus which was a good sign. "Nah, I'm good," Matt called back, "I'll get my stuff off the couch later," he had no idea that he had covered anything up, he didn't use his powers so that they were that finely tuned usually.
Normally he didn't need to either. "I've got more clothes than I realized. I dumped my books and bedding on the bed since I don't have enough bookshelves."
“I have a couple longish cardboard boxes if you want them. If that could work for anything,” Meggan offered. When she had moved between suites, she had kept them. “Or you could use half of my shelf for the books.” She could move her books down a row, so he could have the upper half. So long as there weren’t a lot of huge hardcovers, there had to be enough room to spare.
Most of Matt's books were fiction that he had received as presents over the past few years. He didn't have textbooks for college, yet. He'd get them in a few months when he began college. "They're kinda big since they're in braille," Matt replied, "I could just stack them on the wall until I get a bookcase," that seemed like a good idea. Braille books were more than twice the thickness of regular ones and often came in volumes.
“That might work better than my idea for a while, too,” Meggan acknowledged after a second’s thought. “If they’re too thick to fit, and my box isn’t really as deep as it is long.” If they were that big, Meggan realized might end up with half a book on a shelf, half somewhere else, making things hard for him to find or follow. She doubted it would ever end up as a giant book tower, and it was a slightly better idea than just leaving them somewhere to stumble over. “Maybe closer to the window seat? Could that work, too, if you need another spot?”
"Window seat?" Matt clearly needed to explore the finer points of the room a little more. He had basic furniture figured out, but details like that? Not so much, "I was thinking in my room...?" He had no idea how this whole suite thing worked, especially with Meggan. "I don't wanna mess with your decorating or whatever. It's not like I care. I was just gonna keep my stuff in my room like I did in the students suites."
“Oh, okay. That’s fine. Well, it’s more of a window perch than an official seat. Close enough,” Meggan amended. Even if it was big enough for books. It was the best thing she could come up with to call it. “I can promise you, you wouldn’t be messing with any kind of decorating.” There really wasn’t any decorating for him to accidentally mess up—it wasn’t like there were posters of unicorns covering every available surface, or vases of flowers to knock over. She was no decorator.
"I'll check it out," Matt replied, "I'm not exactly a fashion whatever," he grinned, that would be funny though. "You're in college right? What's your major?"
“I haven’t completely settled on one yet, not really. Not yet, but it’s gradually getting narrowed,” Meggan admitted. Still. “I keep going back and forth when I think I’m about to decide, a little.” She was still torn on which would work better for her, pretty much as she had expected when she had elected the courses. Another half a semester of classes, and she felt like she would know for certain what clicked in the right way. "So it's marine biology on one side, sociology on the other." She liked helping people, and she also liked water and aquatic life. There had been one tiny nudge for teaching, but she didn’t know if she was up for that. There were several exams on the horizon, she could make up her mind after those.
"Well...what would you do with either?" Matt asked reasonably. "Those are kinda different," not that he could talk. He was still undecided on a major himself. Taking his clothes to his room, he started hanging them up. With his hearing and the door open, he could hear Meggan easily. Once he got his stuff mostly in his room he would work on exploring the space more.
“I’m not completely sure with the marine biology one, outside of various underwater things,” Meggan admitted. She knew she didn't need to follow him around while he put things up, and stayed where she was. “I don’t think I ever really want to work around Sea World, but the oceanography part is interesting.” Primarily due to her being able to stay underwater for a long stretch, without scuba gear if she wasn’t too far from the surface in case of trouble, and explore the sea reefs and sea life. She might be able to put sociology to better use if she figured out what worked best.
"You're dating Korvus, right?" Matt asked, switching topics. He'd only been to the ocean once and it was fun, but he wasn't so sure he was all that interested in studying it. Sea World was in Florida or someplace like that, not near here. He had never been. Korvus was cool though. "And you're not an X-Man?"
“Yes—to dating Korvus, I mean, anyway” Meggan answered, before shaking her head. “No, I’m definitely not an X-Man.” She assumed that she had simply managed to get a little too wrapped in college classes and surprise tests, and doing well on things lately--so she never thought of it.
"Why not?" He asked curiously. He was concerned about being overwhelmed with everything and Meggan was in college. Maybe it really was too much to do both? He hoped not.
“I don’t know,” Meggan answered honestly after a moment’s hesitation. “I just never gave any actual, really serious thought to trying or doing it, I guess. I think Molly asked me about it once, back when we were still roommates, if I ever wanted to be.” But she wasn’t sure. And outside of Molly being curious about it that particular time, it just hadn’t come up and other things had happened, and--really, she just hadn't thought about it at all.
"So I guess it's not for you," Matt replied. If she hadn't given it thought, then....it wasn't important to her. Not that helping other mutants wasn't important to her, but not in that way at least. "Probably means you'll graduate faster at least."
“Maybe. Or things were busy, too, and then diving deep into classes?” She didn’t know. Since she didn’t want to mess things up in any classes right now, while working out what kind of major she wanted. Even if she knew she wasn’t messing it up. “Even if it might be sort of funny to see what name I’d end up being given,” Meggan admitted. Since she hadn’t had a codename before, even with the New Mutants. Korvus' was cute, though.
"Hmmm," Matt returned to the living room to get more things from the couch, "I dunno. Putty could be cool. 'Cause you shape shift, right?" It wasn't like he could see it, "Or Play-doh?"
“I’d vote for Play-doh,” Meggan said semi-seriously. “If I had a choice, then, yeah,” she laughed. “Between the two, it just sounds like a better one.” It would be a very interesting thing for someone to shout in the middle of some mayhem, too.
Chuckling, Matt thought that same thing, "Apparently they're supposed to be funny, at least if you're a trainee," he agreed, "Mine's kinda silly. Ping. Not too bad." He'd heard that some had had much worse.
“Yeah, Ping’s really not a bad one to be using at all. It’s not all that silly sounding,” Meggan pointed out. While she might automatically think of finishing it with ping pong when she heard the codename Ping, it still worked for him. But it was a short one, and fast to have said when time was of the essence, so that was another point in favor of it. “A name that took a long while to say, and was a tongue twister, too—that might be bad in the heat of things.” Or funny. It all hinged on the situation.
The other option he had heard was Marco Polo, which was definitely funnier, but was a little goofy in terms of meaning. He hadn't had a say in his trainee name, other than the option of veto if it truly bothered him. "Yeah, it's pretty accurate, too. I just bounce around like a ping pong ball. Or sound waves."
“It definitely works better for all of the sound waves, than balls bouncing everywhere. Even if ping pong balls going amok might be at the first thing to pop into a person's brain,” Meggan admitted. It was the first thing she’d thought of, anyway.
Matt shrugged, "Element of surprise?" he half asked rhetorically, "Maybe they'll think I shoot ping pong balls except....nope. Not finishing that thought," bad thoughts were bad. "I'm gonna go get some more stuff and bring it down. I'm almost done."
