Topaz was curled up on the couch in the common area, reading <i>Blindness</i> (which was every bit as weird and twisted as Ms. Smith had promised) and sipping a cup of tea. She was actually quite comfortable, when all was said and done.
Sue smiled to herself at the sight of Topaz curled up on the couch, for the past few months that had become a pretty standard sight. Sue wasn't sure why the other girl had started avoiding the library, but she wasn't going to complain about the company. Perhaps the only downside were the long periods of, comfortable no doubt, silence. "So, interesting day today?" the blonde asked as she dropped onto the couch across from Topaz, Sue didn't do all that well with silences.
She'd gotten used to Sue trying to fill in the silences. It had unnerved Topaz a bit at first (it was no secret that she was horrible at holding a conversation), but thankfully the blonde never seem to have any expectations as to where the conversation would end up. And Topaz was getting better at it.
"Hmn?" She shifted her eyes to Sue as she took another sip of tea. "<i>Interestin'</i> might be kinda subjective considerin'--"
Considering they were in a school for mutants, but she didn't manage to get that far before a sharp pain stabbed at her head -- like someone drive an ice pick right into the front of her pain. She sucked in a breath as she leaned forward, setting the tea down before it slipped out of her shaking hands, eyes squeezed shut.
"What the <i>hell</i>--?"
"Topaz?" Sue bolted to her feet in alarm staring down at her friend in alarm, "what's wrong?" It looked like Topaz had just been hit with the mother of all headaches, but a headache like that didn't just appear, at least not normally.
Before Topaz could formulate an answer, the sound of shattering glass echoed through the room, and there was a <i>crash</i> a big, horned creature landed on the floor, cracking the floor boards beneath it. "Whoa!" Topaz flew up, the throbbing headache moving way down on her list of priorities.
"Uhh, meep?" Sue asked in surprise blinking at the...thing. She didn't even know what it was, some kind of mutant goat? It almost looked like...a demon. The blood drained from Sue's face and she dropped to the floor her eye's wide in disbelief. "This can't be happening again!" the blonde muttered to herself.
"Not a good time!" Topaz's voice jumped up a couple octaves as she watched Sue go down, and the demon charged forward. She cursed as she muttered a quick spell, and the demon ran headlong into an invisible wall. "C'mon, quick," she said, grabbing Sue's arm and helping her stand. They could run while it was distracted...
Or not, she amended the thought bitterly as their door was barrelled down, and another demon came snarling through.
Sue's mind was going at a mind a minute as she stared at the demon which had just broke down the door, she knew that she should be doing something but her mind kept coming back to the thought <i>I really liked that door</i>.
It was Topaz's reactions that snapped the blonde out of it, the other girl hadn't panicked but was trying her best to control the demon on the floor. Sue wasn't quite sure how powerful Topaz was but wasn't sure if she could handle 2 demons at one. Not that Sue was gonna let her find out, there was no way that she was gonna just let by and leave a friend in that position he decided gritting her teeth and starting forward and throwing her handle out wide as a forcefield shimmered into existence between the girls and the second demon. "You're not getting to me this time," she spat at the demon, looking at the demon but seeing a scorpion.
"My room, c'mon," Topaz said, grabbing Sue's free hand and dragging her back, her dark eyes flitting between the demons as they backed into the room she shared with Molly. "How long can you keep that up?" She asked as they stepped over the threshold, and she dove under her bed, clambering around. Where was it, where was it...
"Few minutes maybe," Sue replied distractedly as she tried to focus on keeping the forcefield stable. "You know, as long as they don't try anything new or come through the wall or anything."
"Few minutes is all I need!"
The young witch inched back out from under the bed, a small box in her hands. She ripped it open quickly, leafing through it's contents and finding what she needed. Clearly warding was no good, if they'd gotten through Amanda's wards they would sure as hell get through hers.
She'd need to go offensive, then.
<i>Right, okay, I can do this,</i> Topaz tried to assure herself as she mixed the correct herbs together. So what if she'd only ever studied the theories and never put it into practice? She was pretty good at getting things right on her first try.
Besides, Maddie would kill her if Sue got hurt, and Molly would be heartbroken if any of her hats were destroyed. Topaz was incredibly motivated to get this right.
"Right, drop it!"
Dropping the forcefield Sue threw herself to the floor with a relieved gasp. She wasn't quite sure what Topaz had in mind, but judging by past experiences things were about to get messy and she didn't want to be caught in the crossfire as the demons leapt over her prone body converging on the younger girl.
Topaz was surprisingly calm as she stepped back, leaves clutched tightly in her hand. The demons dove at her...
And she threw the leaves, muttering the spell under her breath.
Thankfully, the leaves did exactly what they were supposed to do, igniting and exploding. Once more Topaz grabbed Sue, dragging her up and away from the explosions as the demons screamed, collapsing to the ground and dissolving into puddles of ectoplasm.
Staggering to her feet Sue nodded her thanks at Topaz and poked at the remains of the two demons with her foot. "So what was that, and most importantly where do I get my hands on them?" she asked Topaz with a grin.
Topaz smiled dryly as she knelt down in front of the puddle of goo, taking a bit between her thumb and middle finger and rubbing it. "Just some herbs and a spell. They're usually under my bed, but unless you've suddenly acquired magical powers they're probably not gonna do you much good."
"So basically you have the equivalent of a magic grenade under your bed?" Sue asked "That's pretty inspired, I wonder if I can sneak a grenade or two away from somewhere. You never know," she told Topaz with a grin.
"Yeah, let's just be happy they didn't blow up in my face," Topaz muttered. Unfortunately it was a very really possibility, but they hadn't had many options at the time. "If you hide actual grenades here, I'm claimin' ignorance," she added over her shoulder, smirking a bit. A lot of weird things happened in the mansion, but somehow she didn't think weapons of war would be tolerated.
A distant crash brought her back to the situation at hand, however, and her head whipped around to look at their now destroyed suite door. Not an isolated incident, then. That was to be expected, of course. "What the <i>hell</i> is goin' on?"
Sue looked down at the remaining blobs of goo and then up at Topaz, "Nothing good," she noted.
"Sounds sbout right," Topaz muttered, frowning. "Demons, though..."
"Yeah, Demons," Sue agreed, "It just had to be demons didn't it."
"Well puppies don't usually viciously attack," Topaz pointed out. Hiding behind sarcasm to cover up her worry.
"Well I don't know, I've seen some pretty vicious attack puppies," Sue pointed out retreating into being a smart-alec herself, "they're not all smiles and licks." the blonde stated as she inched towards the door and cautiously slid it open and stuck her head out peering up and down the corridor.
There were no demons, but it was clear they had been there. Gashes in the walls, the carpet ripped up. "I'm just gonna say right now," Topaz said dryly as she came up behind Sue, "I did <i>not</i> summon any demons."
Sue grinned at Topaz, "Well if something goes wrong, and it has <i>anything</i> to do with magic then it's probably Billy's fault anyway." the blonde agreed.
Topaz laughed at that. "Good to know if I ever do something horribly wrong with magic, Billy'll be the first suspect."
"No doubt," Sue nodded, "You've got a lot of catching up to do before you ever turn into the prime suspect around here."
"Actually, if it's all the same, I think I'd rather stay under the radar. Safer that way." A distant crash echoed from somewhere below them, reminding Topaz of the situation at hand. Right. Demon invasion.
"Aww," Sue pouted, "you're no fun. What's the point of being able to warp reality if you don't use it to have fun?" Sue glanced over her shoulder in the direction of the crashes, "So, once more into the breech?" she asked, "You do have some more of those magical grenade herbs of yours right?"
"Who said anything about not having any fun with it?" Topaz asked with a light smirk as she stored the small pouch in her pocket for safe keeping. "I just want to make sure I'm never the first suspect. Off we go then."
