Korvus and Meggan enjoy her Christmas present together.
Korvus tilted his head as he watched the television screen. "I really do want to enjoy your present with you but I still simply do not understand." He pulled his legs up under him on the couch, turning a bit to face Meggan. "If The Doctor can travel anywhere in spacetime, why does he not preempt any one of these problems he encounters?"
Before Korvus had bought Meggan this season, it hadn’t made as much sense to her. "It would be bad." Which wasn't an explanation. "Because...he’s in spacetime on that day, and things are already going one way. And then it wouldn’t have happened the same, he wouldn't be there...and really big waves of change would mess everything up. Like an avalanche. Things would get messy if whatever it was--a tumble down the stairs, instead of a war, was supposed to happen, and didn't." What was the phrase thrown around in the show?
She had a better analogy after thinking a moment. "Oh! He said it was a fixed point, didn’t he? So...it's like a thumb tack on a map, holding some threads in place? If you pulled it out, things would fall." It was the best she could do with an explanation. What did one do if something in the timeline was a fixed wibbly wobbly point? Run away really fast, and hope it passed?
After a moment, Korvus nodded reluctantly. "I do not think I will understand it." He admitted, returning his attention to the show to watch anyway. Perhaps he could enjoy something without having to understand it.
The thumb tack theory was the best Meggan could really explain it, so she was relieved he didn’t need more in depth on fixed things. “That’s okay,” she nodded. “This could be more of a show where you just roll with it,” she guessed once there was a lull in the proceedings of what they were watching. “Instead of understanding the physics for it.” Because the physics part would be so complicated. It was just nice to watch something quietly with Korvus, when nothing horrible was happening to or around them.
Korvus nodded, idly slipping his hand into Meggan's. "I suppose there are allowances to be made for the sake of the story." He agreed. "I do appreciate his aversion to violence."
Meggan squeezed his hand in response as they returned to watching the show. “There’s that, too. He thinks,” she nodded happily in agreement. And talked a lot. She wouldn’t have watched this far into an episode if he just reached for the most impressive bomb and stuffed it down the opposing side’s shirt instead of seeing what was happening. It also would have been an absurdly short episode with that type of solution.
"I wonder how that screwdriver works..." Korvus couldn't help but wonder aloud. He shared an interest in mechanics with The Doctor as well and, despite his reluctance to accept the time travel plot points, he did identify with the character. More than just enjoying the show, he enjoyed Meggan's reaction to it, listening to her voice as much as her words as she spoke about it.
It was still a thought that had flitted through Meggan’s mind as well. “I don’t know. If it’s not microscopic batteries,” she surmised, “maybe it runs on the power of time travel? Or his time machine powers it from a distance to keep it vibrating.” Because with the first one, no matter what he was up against, he would have to stop everything and take apart the best thing he had at the worst second. That would be the worst way to go about defeating an evil overlord. Ask for a time out while somebody found spare batteries.
Korvus nodded, "He has to have access to some sort of spectacular energy source to travel through time." He agreed, eyes still on the show. Every time someone spoke, he made sure not to interrupt.
“Oh! Maybe he keeps it deep inside his huge pockets,” Meggan joked. Enough had been pulled out of them, that it could be possible. No matter how complicated things were in this show, or how fast they talked, she just tried to take it all in. Even if it was getting complex sometimes, with bits going over her head. It was still fun, and a nice way of unwinding.
After a moment of intensely watching the screen, Korvus slumped back down into his seat to settle in, resolving to watch the show for what it was. His wrist turned a bit, pulling her hand in closer, resting his free hand on her forearm.
Meggan was truly set on watching as many episodes as was possible. As many as either of them were able to take in, before sleep claimed them. If it were sooner rather than later, she was comfortable right where she was, leaning into Korvus’ shoulder, her hand in his.
