Jessica and Rogue decide to show off by smashing rocks
How this had started escaped Rogue, but here she was in a random mine, rock quarry, something, trying to show up Jessica Jones.
Initially they had had a nice conversation talking about the pros and cons of indoor gyms, which had soon evolved into Jessica mentioning a place nearby they could go, if Rogue thought she was up for it. Indeed, Rogue was up for it, but once she'd landed slightly after Jessica, she could tell immediately that this was a competition and she'd already lost the first round.
"So," Rogue said, leaning down to stretch, "how fast did you say you could fly again? It's amazing how much it differs from person to person, and all. I mean, at my top, I could fly across the country in a day or so." And be ridiculously tired and half conscious, she added to herself. She didn't need to share that.
Jessica had been eager to test her strength against someone else with super strength since she'd arrived at the Mansion. She'd never really tested her limits herself, but now that skunk striped Southerner was with her, she could really cut loose, and the large rocks that laid around the pair were going to compliment that nicely.
"Don't really know, honestly. All I know is, flying a hundred miles per hour in jeans is terribly uncomfortable and, frankly, gives me the worst fucking wedgies. Really dissuades me from going faster, you know?" She replied as she gathered her luxurious hair into a high ponytail. The last thing she wanted was to be blinded by a stray gust of wind playing with her hair as she lifted hundreds of pounds. Her dull brown eyes watched as Rogue stretched, and she figured she'd better do the same, otherwise she'd be hurting tomorrow. "Maybe we should try racing sometime. I'm sure victory would be worth the inevitable riding up." She teased with a smirk as she reached down to touch her toes.
"It's called Spandex," Rogue stated, "and sometimes Spanx. You just don't fly in pretty underwear and inflexible pants". This was said with an air of authority.
"Leather isn't mich better. How come superheroes don't get to fight crime in yoga pants? I'd be down for that.".
She picked up a small ish boulder, and tossed it lightly in the air. It wasn't that much of an effort, but it'd been a good while since she'd exerted herself. "How'd you end up at Xavier's?," she suddenly asked. "I love hearing people's stories."
Hers was still the best though.
"I'm really not a spanx and leather kinda gal, but maybe I should make myself one. Just for flying though." She replied as she lifted a semi-large boulder from the ground. She straightened slowly before she tossed it upwards as hard as she could. It burgled through the air for a few moments before stopping and hurtling back down. She planted her feet and pulled back her arm, closing her hand into a fist. Just as the boulder was about to land in front of her, she brought her fist forward with the force of a small car and smashed it to bits. She wiped her brow and turned toward her companion.
"Nothing too special. I'm apprenticing to be a P.I. back home, but I've always been curious about other mutants and I've been wanting to learn more about my own limits. I heard about Xaviers through some folks I know over in Mutant Town and I eventually got into contact with the Professor. And, well, here I am." She explained.
Rogue gave a low whistle. "Colour me impressed. You've clearly been practicing far more than me." She looked around, and finding a slightly larger boulder, she mimicked Jessica, only as the rock was coming back to earth, she flew up to meet it and she kicked it with a roundhouse, exerting enough pressure that the resulting gravel flew in the opposite direction.
Landing, she put her hands on her hips, and took a deep breath. "Sure been a while since I had to do much more than walk to my car and collect my mail. I think I'm going to feel this tomorrow, that's a definite."
Jessica's eyebrows shot up at Marie's display of strength. Shed known the other woman for only a short time, but it was clear that shed been trained how to fight and use her strength to the fullest.
"Gotta say, that was fucking awesome! As for more practice, I doubt it. I'm sure I'll be feeling.g it tomorrow too. The only exertion I've goten this past month is errand running and dodging eye contact with Namor, seriously." She explained before she walked up to a boulder almost as large as she was. She flicked her ponytail over her shoulder and looked back at Rogue. She gave the other mutant woman a grin before she rocketed upwards, moving ever so slightly so that she was positioned above the boulder. She drew her limbs in close, curling in upon herself as much as she could before she simply let herself drop. She sank like a stone hurtling downwards at a breakneck speed. She let out a little laugh as she smashed into the boulder like a wrecking ball, shattering it with a thunderous boom. Dust shot up around her and she slowly walked out of it, coughing and smiling "Damn, I've always wanted to try shit like that. That's a check off my bucket list." She giggled. She moved toward Rogue, and leaned against a waist high rock a few feet from her.
"So...what brought you back from up north? I have a feeling you don't have family in Canada. If you don't mind me asking." She asked as she reached up to adjust her pony.
Rogue had to laugh too. The other woman's enthusiasm was catching. It was clear that whatever wariness they had started with was quickly dissipating.
"You're right, got no family in Canada. Was up there following leads and ended up staying there." She picked up a large boulder, obviously exerting herself as she pulled back and threw it into the side of the hill. A mini landslide resulted, and she floated up lightly to avoid the rocks.
"After a while I missed everyone," she continued. "It's nice to be back where everyone knows me. Been around these parts coming on 13, 14 years now. I know, I'm old."
She lifted another rock, smaller this time and started tossing it in the air before throwing it towards Jess. "Think fast!"
Jessica's eyes widened and her hands shot out on reflex to catch the rock. The impact pushed her back a little, but otherwise she was fine. She tossed the rock between her hands and gave Rogue a smile.
"Don't worry, I'm not ageist, so I won't harp on you for being old." Jessica teased, clearly joking. Rogue was in great shape from what Jessica could tell, and didn't really look more than a few years older than Jessica herself did.
"Even though I haven't been at Xaviers long, I can see how you'd miss it. It's pretty fucking awesome from what I've seen so far. Almost everybody's been warm and friendly." She thought, thinking of Matt, Lorna, and Angel in particular.
"I feel old," Rogue said, floating a little in the air, enjoying the weightlessness. "But it's probably got more to do with living the life we live than anything else.
She lazily twisted in the air, stretching her limbs fully.
"I am glad to be back," she continued. "It's nice to be somewhere that I'm fully accepted in. Course, at the same time,it's easy to forget how much we're hated..."
"Yeah, having an investigative mind like I do, you really see the uglier side of things. I'm not ashamed of who I am and, if someone asked me if I was a mutant, I wouldn't say no...Still, it makes me feel like shit when I realize that I'm one of the 'lucky' ones. One of the mutants whose powers don't really have any real drawbacks. I mean sure, I broke quite a few things and smashed into a number of buildings, but other than that..." She replied. "That's why I'm here. To find out just what my limits are so I can better use them for myself and for others. I hate to sound like a fucking bleeding heart, but it's true." She finished.
"I think that's great," Rogue replied, landing on her feet. "More people should have that attitude about their powers, cause you know, whether we like it or not, we are our powers. Gotta know our limits so we can be safe and careful."
She smiled suddenly. "Like how else would I know that I fly better wearing almost nothing. " A wink
"These are boundaries I need to know about."
Jessica let out a little laugh at Rogue's nude flying comment. She'd have to try that sometime. You know, where absolutely no one could see her. "Definitely something important to know." She agreed.
Rogue stretched her arms above her head. "So how long you figure you'll be in our little corner?"
Our. It didn't take long for her to feel right at home again. "Are you doing any private eye work while you're here, or is that on a need to know basjs," she asked, a twinkle in her eye.
"That is a good fucking question. I guess I don't know. I've got some time to kill while I keep apprenticing and I was thinking of maybe getting a general post-secondary education. Plus, I want to work on my powers. This little rock toss aside, I'm still unsure of myself. As for P.I. work, I wish. Seriously, I just kind of do the grunt work for the P.I. I'm working under. The state of New York's a bitch and requires you to have three years experience." She relayed. "So, probably a while." She added. Jessica strode over toward Rogue and quickly sat herself down on a nearby rock. "What about you? I mean, you lived at Xavier's for a long time before right? Are you back for good? I'm not trying to get all heavy on you, I swear, I just like to know about people." She continued. She looked at the ground for a moment, taking in the grey and black rocks beneath her feet, before she looked up at Rogue again. "Look, I know this is only like the second time we've met and stuff. You just kinda know me as fellow super strong flier who regularly orders an entree of motormouth and a side of word vomit and I kinda just know you as a skunk striped Southerner who I suspect is wise beyond her years...Flattery aside, I was kinda wondering if you'd be kind enough to teach me how to control all of this?" She asked in a rush, punctuating her statement by crushing a stone in her hand and letting the granules dribble out from between her fingers.
The request surprised her, and took her off balance a little -- both literally, and figuratively, as she faltered slighting in her step.
"Me? You want me to help ya? Really? Little ol' me?" It was surprising to Rogue but at the same time, exhilerating. It was her turn to mentor someone, after years of receiving mentoring. She was going to make sure she was deserving of this. Time to step up her game.
"Well, sure, pun'kin, if that's what you want, then I'm happy to help. Just remember though," she added in a warning tone, "I was trained by Wolverine himself. I ain't gonna go easy on you, y'hear?" Rogue lifted into the air, and winked down at Jessica. "Now let's get started -- last one back to the Mansion has to do laps!"
"You're on!!" Jessica cried as she leapt up into the air.
