The X-Men arrive.
It was like second nature to him by now, but Scott never took landings lightly. People might joke that he didn't want to scratch the paint, and he didn't, but he'd seen too many situations where a bad landing job had lost precious seconds when they needed to take off fast, and in this job you needed every advantage you could get.
"And...perfect," Scott reached out to the controls flicking the switches as he ran through the shutdown procedure, "Ok, lets get moving, Rocky take point, Penance back her up. I'll bring up the rear."
Yvette nodded, pulling her gloves off. They weren't expecting combat, but she might have to dig out potential victims - the end of the hotel as they'd come in for a landing had looked fairly damaged. "After you, Rocky," she said with a reassuring smile to the youngest of their team.
"Man, that name would be better if I could fly. And someone were a moose. Mr. Summers? Can you be Bullwinkle? What do you think Vette?" Dori asked, almost skipping forward and taking in all the scents and sounds of where they were. Nothing seemed off yet, but that didn't mean things wouldn't change real fast. Superheroing! The job that kept you on your toes!
"I think Daisy might have an objection to someone pretending to be a moose," Scott pointed out with a smile, "Besides, Wolverine would make a much better Bullwinkle than me." Scott couldn't see Logan being very happy with the suggestion that he act like Bullwinkle, he was too serious for that, which Scott would have admit applied to himself too if he was brutally honest. "And Rocky, we're in the field, so code names only please," he chided gently.
"Oh, right! Mr. Cyclops. I'm sorry, Mr. Cyclops! I'll get started now!" Dori said, bounding forward with her own special brand of energy.
Yvette shook her head and giggled before following, saying over her shoulder to Scott: "We are never giving her sugar on the Blackbird again."
Whatever had happened, it was still happening - dust was rising from the collapsed part of the motel.
"I'm still not sure how she managed to find any sugar in the pane," Scott replied distractedly as he examined the motel. Whatever had happened it had at least been restricted to one end of the motel at least, the majority of the building was ok, but near to one end it was totalled. "What happened here?" the X-man wondered out loud.
Dori skipped a few steps ahead, sniffing the air and stopping every few steps. There was a lot of damage to one side of the hotel, it kind of made her wonder what had happened. She also wanted to poke at the walls while saying 'poke' but managed to reign herself in. She didn't want it widely known she had stuffed her trainee uniform with pixie sticks before taking off. This was her secret. Her BEST secret. Her secret weapon secret.
"Almost to the door," she called back.
"Can you smell anyone?" Yvette responded, following behind. She knew Dori's nose wasn't as good as say, Kyle's or Logan's, but it certainly was better than hers.
Dori's reply was interrupted by the sound of squealing metal as one of the few remaining doors on the side of the hotel facing the team blasted off its hinges. A tattered figure ducked out of the hole nimbly, using an exposed girder to flip up and onto what had been the second story.
"Well there's someone, though I don't think he really plans on sticking around to answer our questions," Scott observed wryly as he watched the figure vanish into the second storey. "Well guess we should get after him and find out what happened out here," he said gesturing to a nearby mack truck which gave them easy access to the second story.
"Something messy," Yvette suggested, looking at the truck ploughed into the wall of the motel, the damaged second story and the remains of the door. "Come on, Rocky, lets see who can climb up there fastest."
"I'm already on it," Dori said, taking a great leap in that direction, a grin on her face.
Scott watched with an amused smile as the two younger X-men swarmed up the side of the building. He definitely wasn't about to follow them, even as a kid he would never have tried it. "I'll just take the scenic route then," he noted.
Just as the younger X-Men reached the roof, the last door standing at the end of the collapsed section of the motel exploded outward, the broad shoulders and thickly muscled neck of a goon barely visible beneath the fragments of wood and plaster. Moments later, the entire wall gave way, revealing the damaged interiors of the upstairs and downstairs rooms alike.
