Julian seeks out Doreen to see how she is coping with the death of Monkey Joe.

Julian stood outside the door to Doreen Green's suite. They'd been friends longer than anyone he knew, with the exception of his little brother- although he'd never shoved his little brother in a locker, or freed him from one. There was a tray in hand, and though he was cautioned against using his powers frivolously, he used his telekinesis to knock on the door firmly. They'd all lost much in the past week, Doreen more than others- and he was here to do his duty as a friend.

Dori was sitting on her bed, holding a picture of her and Monkey Joe that was taken before she came to Xavier's. At the knock on her door she dried her eyes and made sure she looked something resembling presentable, "Coming," she said, opening the door to Julian, "Oh. Hey. Um, come in? I'm kinda a mess, I'm sorry," she finished quickly.

Upon seeing her, Julian dropped the tray, which he caught in a ghostly green glow and floated to the side. Stepping over the threshold, he wrapped his arms around Doreen in a warm, firm hug. "You don't have to apologize to me, Dori. Ever."

It took a moment, but Dori buried herself in the hug and started crying. She hadn't said much to anyone about it, because in the grand scheme of things being so grieved over a squirrel might look really bad to people who had lost, well, people. She didn't want to make anyone feel even worse. Consequently she was doing most of her grieving alone or with Kyle. And even then she felt like an ass for being so upset about Monkey Joe which made her feel bad for feeling bad. It was a guilt spiral.

Julian had already shed all the tears he cared to, but his friend grieving was too much and they came again. He lifted them and the tray up and floated them all inside, shutting the door behind them- he didn't want anyone to see him cry. They stayed in that embrace for a long time, until the tears dried on their cheeks and both felt a bit more human again. Wiping snot away from his nose, Keller gave a weak smile and looked into Doreen's reddened eyes, "Dork."

"Yeah, I know," she said, wiping her eyes again, "I got you all wet, I'm sor-well you know," she said, stopping just short of apologizing, "Just... I know this sounds so dumb... but what do I do without him?"

"What he'd want you to do," he smiled warmly and floated the tray of roasted nuts, nutella spread, and special hot chocolate over to them. "Eat way too much and continue to be awesome."

The scents were both comforting and made her think of her lost friend again, "I do that anyway," she said, sniffling, "I mean, how do I explain to everyone with everything that's happened that I feel like this about what most of them think was a pet?"

"Monkey Joe was a lot of things...a pest, a thief, a saboteur...but he was never just a pet. He was your best friend, and...." Julian had a sudden lump catch in his throat, it took a moment to clear. "I'm so, so sorry, Dori," he sighed and centered himself before going on. "Monkey Joe was with you on missions, he helped us beat McPhearson's gang...or...didn't now I guess, but we still remember it, so it counts. He was a hero. He was an X-Man...or X-Squirrel I suppose, either way." He hoped this was helping her.

"Why couldn't I have gotten him back though?" Dori asked, "If the whole universe can be patched together why couldn't he have just... been here when we got back? I wanted him to be here."

Silence filled the room again, Julian had no answer for her. "Some things got missed," he looked down for a moment, Tandy once again filling his mind- the way she had looked when he left for India. "I'm sorry, MJ wasn't here...I wish he was too."

Dori sniffled, "I'm sorry. Everyone's lost something and people are going to be miffed with me for being so upset about MJ but he... he was my only friend for a long time, until you and you're still here, thank God you're still here!"

Julian took Doreen's chin and turned it toward him fully, meeting her eyes with a serious expression. "My loss...our losses, don't invalidate your loss. You need to grieve. And that's what I'm here for- to help my oldest friend through it."

Dori's lower lip wavered and then she started sobbing again, burying her head in her best friend's chest. It was all she could say or do that really fit how she felt. The sobs wracked her body, shaking even her tail.
