Topaz and Amanda return from meeting Maya's grandfather, and Topaz brings Maya her "gift."Backdated to May 30

Topaz kept her hands tight around the box as she made her way through the woods, ducking around branches and trees. Maya's camp wasn't too far out, thankfully, and she came upon soon enough.

"Nice set up you've got here," she commented. "Sorry to intrude."

Maya hadn’t bothered to wear her implants in days, one of the values of not being around anyone she needed to hear, but luckily for Topaz, she’d seen her coming and put them in quickly before she arrived.

“If you were sorry, you wouldn’t have come here,” Maya pointed out, feeling pedantic. “And it’s okay, I guess. Doesn’t have anyone I want to hit, at least. What do you want?”

"Well I wasn't sure when you planned on moving back into the mansion and I figured you wouldn't want to wait to hear what your grandfather had to say," Topaz countered as she sat down, crossing her legs under herself and putting the box down between them.
“Then lead with that, pointless politeness makes my teeth grind,” Maya replied mildly, not reaching for the box, despite an urge to grab it. “What did my Grandfather say?”

"So charming," Topaz said just as mildly. "You can take the box, you know. It's yours. He said you need to call your grandmother and that this will help you with the possession problem."
“People tell me that all the time, it’s one of my best traits,” Maya replied, but her lips quirked in a smile as she picked up the box. “I’ll talk to Wade, see if we can set up something. Did he say anything else?”

Maya weighed the box, pondering what might be in it. Her Grandfather had always been a somewhat distant figure in her life, there and important but not the type of person you came to for hugs or because you’d fallen over and scraped your knee. Her Grandmother had been different, and if Maya were close to anyone in this world, then it would be to her.

"He mostly just wanted to make sure you're okay." Topaz picked a bit of grass. "Very interesting man." Honestly, if they'd had the chance Topaz probably would've been able to listen to him for hours. She would've loved to know more about this type of magic.

“Family is important,” Maya noted, finally opening the box to peer inside. The necklace was nondescript silver, but it felt old in a way she wouldn’t have been able to explain to anyone who asked. There was…a presence about it, almost like she’d feel from the woods around her. “This is old, and um…I think it’s got a spirit in it.”

It would have been willing, whatever it was, her family didn’t bind spirits to objects without their permission, unless the spirit was harmful in some way and this object didn’t feel malevolent, the opposite in fact.

"So they say." Family wasn't something Topaz had ever had much luck with, so she was going to take Maya's word for it on that one.

At Maya's observation she tilted her head. She could feel a faint magical presence, but probably nothing compared to what Maya was feeling. And apparently spirits didn't register empathically. That was interesting.

“So I know,” Maya replied with a frown as she looked up from the necklace, without another thought she placed it over her head and then gasped at the sensation. It wasn’t physical, more like something brushing her soul, a welcome, and perhaps a sense of curiosity? She tried to send reassurance and a welcome of her own, even though she’d never really had much training in it beyond her interactions with natural places. “It…it’s powerful.”

Topaz closed her eyes, taking a moment to close out her other senses and focus on just the faint sense of magic. It was nothing like she had ever felt before, so different from the magic she was used to. Different from her own and Amanda's, from any of the kid's, even from Megan's, which came from demons. It was...pure, in a way none of them could manage. "I'm not sure how it works," Topaz said finally, opening her eyes again. "Amanda and I can help you figure it out, if you need it."

It took Maya some time to answer, wrapped up in communicating with the spirit, but she glanced up finally and smiled. It was different from previous smiles, and held a peace not normally associated with the angry young woman.

“I’d like that, I want to understand.”

It was honestly amazing the difference a smile could make in a person. She smiled back gently. "We can work on it together. Should be an interesting endeavor."
