Amanda, Kurt - Thursday evening
Oct. 26th, 2017 06:35 pmDropping by to invite Kurt out for food, Amanda finds out about the end of his relationship.
"Hey Blue!" Amanda's cheerful greeting preceded her appearance in Kurt's suite as the witch breezed in. "Just had a call with that Ancient One geezer and I could totally go for some comfort food. How about we grab Meg and make it a family night down at the Chinese?" She paused, expecting Kurt's usual smile and return greeting. When it didn't come, she frowned, concerned. "Blue? You sick?"
The return greeting came a moment later, from the bedroom doorway, but unaccompanied by a smile.
"Hello, Amanda - no, not sick, and I think Chinese comfort food would be good."
"What's wrong?" There was no point him denying there was something wrong, she could see it written all over him, from the lack of his usual smile to the droop of his tail. "Nothing's happened to the caravan, has it?" She crossed the space between them to look up into his face, expression concerned.
"No", he assured her quickly, reaching to hug her. "All is well there."
Unable to find the words to explain, he nodded to the stacks of packed boxes behind her.
"You're leaving?" She glanced over at the boxes and frowned, stepping over to examine them and noting the name written on them. "She's moving out? I mean, I know she's got a job on and she's going deep undercover, but I don't get it why would she..." Then the penny finally dropped and she looked over at her brother, her heart breaking for him. "Oh, Kurt. I'm so sorry."
"She tells me she cannot continue to be who she needs to, if I am waiting here for her", he said quietly. "And so she can no longer love me."
Amanda winced. She'd had to do similar, breaking up with Angelo, but she'd never would have told him she couldn't love him any more. "That... sounds like Jubilee," she said, perhaps a little venomously. "Not one to spare anyone's feelings, not even her finacé's." She shoved away her reaction to look up into Kurt's face again. "You gunna be okay?"
"Eventually", was the best he could offer. "We are great survivors, our family. And it is not the first time."
That fact alone was making it harder for him to contemplate trying again.
Those last words broke her heart for him all over again and this time she was the one who moved to hug him tightly. "I'm so sorry," she repeated - what else could she say? "You know I didn't like the idea of her marrying you, but I never wanted this. No-one should go through this."
"I will ask Charles to be assigned a different room, I think." He didn't know what to say to her sympathy, so... practicality. "Not this one."
She managed a weak smile at that as she let him go. "'S for the best," she agreed. "Fresh start, all that jazz." A thought occurred to her. "If you want somewhere to stay tonight, you can come to my place? Half the time Angie's with Wade and Doug, so it's not a bother."
Kurt nodded. "I think that would be a good thing. To begin to get a little space."
"Good." Amanda nodded, the continued in the 'I've got things sorted' manner that her students would recognise. "First, tho', food. Go get cleaned up and I'll grab Meg and we'll have that family dinner. And then we're going to Harry's for drinks. Because tradition. Besides," and here she grinned at him. "I owe you an escort home sloppy drunk, after the last week."
That actually made him laugh - quietly and not for long, but it was a laugh. "Will we be bringing Meg home before the drinking?"
Her expression lightened at the laugh. He wasn't as broken as she'd feared. Once again, Kurt was proving stronger than she'd given him credit. "Only if she wants to. She's all grown up and legal now, and I wouldn't dare. Plus she can help with the carrying later."
"Certainly teleporting home will be off the cards", he agreed. "Though I will try not to put too much weight on either of you."
"You lean as much as you need to," Amanda replied. "That's what family's for."
