Log: Scott/Tandy: New Trainee
Mar. 14th, 2018 11:30 amTandy goes to Scott about joining a team.
There were a few places that Scott Summers would hang out and if you lived at the mansion long enough you sort of just knew where to start looking. Tandy checked first the garage and didn't see him, so that left two more places. The second spot proved the be successful.
"Knock knock." The blonde said as she stood in his doorway waiting be granted permission to enter. "Do you have a few?"
Scott looked up from his desk, a small smile just touching the corners of his lips as he put down the report he'd been reading, raising one had to wave Tandy in from the door. "You know, I think that might be the first time someone has said Knock Knock instead of just well knocking." The -man waved to one of the chairs in front of his desk, "How can I help Miss Bowen?"
"First time for everything right?" Tandy walked into the room before taking one of the chairs that was offered to her. "I am just going to cut right to the chase Mr. Summers. I would like to join the X-Men."
Well, ok that wasn't what Scott had thought would happen, if he was completely honest he'd thought that maybe the young blonde was here to ask for some help setting up a volunteer program at the mansion, or perhaps to tell him that there was about to be some kind of dire Asgardian threat. Not well joining the team, the brown haired man let the silence drag on for a moment, as he regarded her before he spoke. "You've thought this through, some of us will die in this job, some of us end up hurt like Julian, or me. Are you willing to put yourself out like that? Are you willing to work as part of a team, I've read through the reports on Asgard and while they might be pretty incredible fighters they're all warriors and that's where you learnt to fight. The X-men aren't warriors though, we're soldiers and fighters, we fight with each other instead of fighting together."
Tandy never looked away from Scott in the long silence. It was probably a shocker. Not every day when someone wanted to join a team. "I know there are risks that comes when joining the team. But I can't let that be my only deciding factor on not wanting to do more than just sit around and throw my money at problems. I am no stranger to putting my life on the line Mr. Summers. Bald'r only trained me in case situations got hairy, he taught me that there are other ways to settle a fight."
"That's what I'm afraid of," Scott scrubbed a hand over his eyes offering Tandy a tired smile, "Everyone's always ready to sacrifice themselves for an ideal. At least when they come in here to talk to me. They're all ready to put their lives on the line, but it's not our job to put our lives on the line for an ideal, but to put your life on the line for your teammates. Sometimes you have no choice but to fight as you say, more and more these days if I'm honest, but the person standing next to you is counting on you not to put your life on the line because it means their life gets put on the line too."
"I see what you are saying. Let me rephase, "I am willing to put my life on the line, for those who can't or don't want too. I also realize this is a thankless job, but I am not here for the glory of it. Just wanting to make this world a little less dark."
"I'm not gonna be able to dissuade you am I?" Scott's gaze rested on Tandy, his dark eyes watching her carefully as he nodded his head at her. "That's a good motivation, as good a motivation as anything else." The corner of his lips turned up, "but then you've never lacked conviction have you?"
"Nope. I think it is my belief in things that keeps me going. However, my religious stance may have moved a little since I was an avatar for a demon. Just a bit." She moved two fingers and held them close together. "I think Mr. Scott, you won't be the last person to try and dissuade me. But I have Adri as my guardian and she taught me all I need to know about stubbornness and leading with my head."
Scott pushed back in his chair, hands pressed against one another as he gave the blonde a long look. "You know, that isn't exactly the best thing to tell me, not the best argument you could make there Tandy. The fact is that being stubborn, leading with your head as you say can get people hurt or killed. Not just you but your teammates too. Oh, I'm not going to stop you joining the team, we could use your conviction but just think about it sometime. We're a team, that means if you go charging in your teammates will follow, they'll protect you and watch you back no matter what. But if it's a blind charge, they won't be ready for it, and someone could get hurt and that would be on you. Sometimes, you need to give a bit, to bend, for the sakes of those around you as much as anything else."
"I'll keep that in mind." She couldn't help but smirk. "I won't be a Leeroy Jenkins of the team. It has been awhile since I trained with a team, not since..." She bit her lower lip and looked away for a second as it was the New Mutants was the last group she had actually trained with. "I look forward to being part of a team again."
Scott almost followed up with the inevitable question, 'who was Leeroy Jenkins?' but then he was smart enough to know not to open that can of worms. Instead, he reached out a hand to the young woman sitting across from him, "Well then, welcome to the X-men Miss Bowen."
Tandy took his hand into her own. "Thanks. Mr. Summers." Tandy paused for just a second. "You don't know who Leeroy Jenkins is, do you?"
