Jean and Wanda have revenge sushi, drink, and talk about all the weird shit they've been through.

Jean sat in the mansion lobby reading a book as she waited for Wanda. It'd been a few days since their ill-fated voyage under the sea, but things were finally getting back to normal.

Her friend didn't keep her waiting long, thankfully. Wanda had to finish up one call back to her relatives but it hadn't taken long to get her various cousins off the phone. "So, we decided we were doing revenge lunch, yes?" she called out. "Sushi?"

"Hell yeah," Jean said, closing her book as she tucked it into her purse. Her voice was still vaguely scratchy, but she had finally gotten it back. She was tired of freaking people out by having to think talk at them.

"And some sort of dessert. Because I need it."

"I think dessert and a bottle of wine is the least we're owed by the universe after this last debacle." Wanda shrugged her light jacket on and shook the car keys at Jean. "Shall we get out of here and to our revenge dinner, then? I hope that sushi restaurant is prepared for the two of us."

"It better be. I want to get drunk enough to only partially remember tonight," Jean said with a laugh, then motioned for her to go ahead, gladly following her.

"I'm thinking a lot of sake. For the occasion."

The sushi restaurant was fairly empty when they arrived, so it had been pretty easy for Wanda to get them at one of the more private tables. It wasn't exactly the most secure place but at least they weren't out in the open and could easily watch all access points. Wanda figured better to be paranoid than dead because she got sloppy over drinks and dinner. "Well, that was quite a large order of sushi we just placed," she commented with a small laugh as she reached for her drink.

Jean smiled wryly. "I see nothing wrong with that," she said. The smell of fish brought back a few unpleasant memories but she was more than happy to drown them in sake and sashimi.

"I said all that to say this...dinner's on me. Least I can do after evil me tried to kill you, and then, failing that, recruit you to the dark side."

"Trust me, I am not going to turn down free dinner and drinks!" Wanda laughed, taking a sip of her sake. "Though you cannot honestly believe I blame you for any of what happened?" She quirked an eyebrow at Jean. "Though the attempted recruiting was a nice trick."

Making a face, Jean took a drink of her sake like it were a shot.

"Apparently I am very good at being evil," she mumbled into her glass.

"I think Attuma had a crush on me."

Wanda grimaced at the second portion, not at the being evil part. "Well, that is problematic. I suggest you swipe left on that one." Leaning back, she tried to catch Jean's eye. "Being good at being evil while being possessed doesn't count. You know that, yes? Trust me, I have met my share of megalomaniacs and evil beings - I've seen you cry at commercials."

Jean held up her finger. "Hey---If you don't cry at that Sarah McLaughlin animal commercial you're a monster," she said, eyeing the drink menu for her next venture before glancing back up to Wanda.

"Yeah, I know it doesn't count but...a mind-controlling squid? That's freaking ridiculous. It just...feels like something out of a cartoon."

There was a slight shrug in response as Wanda finished off her glass of wine before taking the drink menu that Jean handed to her. "Strange, yes, but also not terribly unexpected. I suppose it was only a matter of time before a physical transformation happened to us."

There came shudder at that, still remembering both turning into the sea-monster and turning back human again.

"Now that it's happened, let's hope it never happens again. Of course you guys got Little Mermaid tails and I became scary eel jellyfish lady."

"My entire head of hair turned into a mess of tentacles," Wanda pointed out helpfully. "Though to be fair, you absolutely got the worst of things. Mine was far more voluntary if still ... ah, unpleasant." She paused for a second to flag down the waiter to order another round of drinks. When he went to place the order at the bar, she turned back to Jean. "I am more than okay with it never happening again, though that might be a bet I would hesitate to take anyone up on."

"I heard there was a lot of magic involved to make you guys have the...mess of tentacles?" Jean said, looking a little dismayed as she waved her hand behind her head vaguely and wiggled her fingers..

Wanda grimaced. "A lot of magic I could deal with. That terrible drink Clea called a potion I could do without, thank you. I thought some of the bootleg vodka I had in the Ukraine had been bad but..." A shudder ran through her body and she took a drink of water to wash out the imaginary taste. "Other than that and the crippling pain, it wasn't so bad,"

Jean laughed. "And to think other people are worried about paying back their taxes or getting to work on time. We get sea-monsters, mind-controlling squids, mermaids, and crippling magic pain," she said, picking up her chopsticks and using them to do an air drum solo.

"I will say, despite the traumatic memories, it was really beautiful there. Up top and down below. I actually explored a sunken ship while I was evil. Felt just like Ariel."

Along with their drinks came their appetizers and Wanda gladly tucked into her tempura. Long gone was the bad hair day from the sea water - and from being turned into tentacles - along with most of the other side effects from her time as a mermaid. But she couldn't seem to shake the hunger, though it was slowly getting better every day. "I was never much of an ocean or beach kind of girl," she said after a moment. "Beaches were not a thing we went to growing up - vacations cost money. After our experience, I can see why people think it's beautiful and I am glad you have those pleasant memories but I think I will stick to the mountains for my next trip."

Jean sat back, eyes distant and thoughtful. "That sounds pretty nice, actually. It'd be great to settle in with a good book and a roaring fire," she said. She grabbed a piece of sashimi.

"I guess I'm used to being near the water. It was never a vacation, just some free weekend. My parents would take my sister and I to the shore and we'd collect seashells and make sand castles. We'd always try to sabotage the other one's castle," she mused, popping the sashimi in her mouth.

"Did you guys ever do anything like a staycation? Find things to do where you were?"

"Oh, all the time," Wanda laughed. "Money was tight but we made the best of what we had on hand. We traveled quite a bit, too, for months at a time sometimes and my relatives were very good at making sure to keep the children entertained. I have to admit, it is hard to imagine you deliberately knocking over someone's sandcastle." She was teasing now. "I could see myself doing it as sabotage is absolutely one way to go but you?"

"She started it," Jean countered, uttering the mantra of every sibling as she took a sip of water.

"I just finished it. Besides, I never knocked it over. I just....improved it by adding things that shouldn't be there. Like the family dog."

She threw back her head slightly as she laughed. "Now, that I can see. Let someone bring the fight to you, and you will absolutely finish it." Wanda grinned and tipped her drink in a salute. "This is why we're friends."

Returning the grin, Jean lifted up her own glass.

"And here I was thinking it was the impeccable taste and fashion sense," she mused. She glanced around.

"Hopefully they'll have our next round of drinks soon so we'll have something proper to toast with."

"Speak of the devil," Wanda laughed, spotting their waiter heading their way with another round of drinks. They said their thanks as he dropped them off and whisked away their empty glasses. "So, we are absolutely Ubering back to the mansion." She grinned and grabbed at her drink. "I was prepared for that, made sure to park in a spot where I wouldn't get towed."

"You would've made a marvelous girl scout," Jean said, tapping her temple. She could already feel a pleasant warmth settling in her stomach and across her skin.

"Frankly, you're one of the chillest people I've ever met." She shook her head.

"One catastrophe after the other...squid monsters, terrorists, destruction....And it just rolls off your back. I don't---How are you so calm about it? It's still gets me sometimes. Like now," she said, eying her drink as emphasis and taking a heavy swig.

A small part of Wanda squirmed at the question but the rest of her just shrugged. "I keep an actual Elder God from invading my body via a magical tattoo and far too much scotch. You get kind of blasé at a certain point." Grabbing her drink, she took a deep sip. Staring into the liquid, she shrugged again. "Honestly, I suppose I'm just too tired these days to really be anything other than chill, as you say."

Looking back up at Jean, she smiled but it was a little sad. "Things do still get to me, I promise you. The big things, the life and death ones. I just drink away the rest of them."

Jean was silent for a moment, studying the other woman. She had a quiet grace to her. Always had. But there was a hint of weariness to her eyes. One that showed only in fleeting moments, out of the corner of one's eye, if someone knew where to look.

"Never gets any easier, does it?" she said, leaning against her and resting her head against her shoulder.

"Despite my boozy, nonchalant attitude ... it really doesn't," Wanda said, huffing a laugh as she put her chin on the top of Jean's head. "But we make do, as we always do. Prop each other up. Eat too much food. Drink too much. Wait, that last one might just be me."
