After losing Miles somehow, Nica and Clea find the adults that came to the recuse, followed by the lost Rahne. The kids quickly fill in what in the world is going on.
"Oh for fuck's sake!" Nica exclaimed in exasperation. "Where did Miles go?" She looked around as if expecting to find he was using his camouflage to play a prank. But still no Miles. "Clea, did you see where he went?"
"He was just there." Clea pointed to the spot where Miles was just standing. "What the bloody fuck!?" Walking over to where he was just at as if that was going to bring him back. "I hate this."
"We all do," replied Nica. "Well, we can't stay here - let's try this way and see if we can't find a way out..." She gestured at a nearby corner, but before they could reach it, several voices could be heard. Adult-type voices.
"...one of those 'back in my day' people, but seriously, I think I had it easier in high school than these guys do," one of the voices was saying, and a moment later Alex, Darcy, and Julian rounded the corner. Alex was leading, somehow, and grinned when he saw the kids. "Hey! Are you guys okay?"
Pixie suddenly felt small and scared, like a child. She thought she saw herself rounding the corner with Alex and the others, but then she passed herself and she was gone.
"Do you see me? Did you see Miles? This world mixes up was and when," she said, hugging herself.
A door slammed open and Rahne was there, blinking at the group in surprise but a lot of relief. "Oh good, at least I found a group of people after I lost another group of them. My senses are going haywire, I have no idea where they are!"
"Okay," Julian tried to project the calm he wanted them to have, "stay calm...this isn't the weirdest situation I've been in," Julian held up his wrists- both of his hands were detached and floating nearby, one of them worse for wear, as if it had been mauled by a bear- "not even close." The sound of snuffling came from behind him, causing an involuntary pulse of telekinetic force to fire in that direction, making the lockers rattle or pop open if they didn't have locks. Exchanging a knowing look with Darcy, he continued, "Okay, priority is getting you kids out of here- we'll come back to find the others." One of the waves of force impacted against something large and furry, causing his eyes to pop slightly.
Nica had moved to put her arm around Megan's shoulders to comfort her, but at Julian's words looked up. The instinctive response of who're you calling a kid? died on her lips as she realised it wouldn't help things. And Julian was the commanding officer, sort of. She could take instruction. "We've been trying, but there's something about this place that's stopping us from leaving," she told Julian. "It's like some kind of weird maze with the walls shifting around."
"Well that's no good," Darcy said in response. "We've all gotta get out of here at some point. Mansion teens first, since we're literally responsible for your well-being, and grab other teens as we see them? And hopefully leave the hinky weirdness in some unused janitor's closet."
"There is also something else here. I think it is a bear, but its bloodt gives off a vibe that it is more than just that." Clea said holding her arms. "And we've been trying to call out but there is no signal."
Alex dared to take his eyes off the group for a second, looking up and down the hall. "It feels like one of those dreams," he said, like everyone knew what he meant. "Ya know, where you're walking down the hall and it seems normal but everything is kind of wavy on the edges and the floor feels like it's tilting under your feet and then things begin to warp. Do you guys know what's causing this?"
"Magic?" Nica's tone was a bit sarcastic, but held as much helplessness as bitterness. "At least, that's the only thing that makes sense."
"The world is full of magic things, waiting for our senses to get sharper," Pixie quoted, straightening. Of course, sometimes it really was magic. But that didn't mean you couldn't get a handle on it.
"Is that good or bad?" Rahne asked. "I can't tell anymore!" Though the idea that it was magic was actually slightly comforting since their group had several magic users. She turned towards said magic-users. "Time to pick yer brains. Any ideas?"
